Player 1 - 12 R, 18 RBI, bWAR 0.8. Hopefully someone who learns how to play 1B.
Player 2 - 14 R, 15 RBI, bWAR -0.4. Someone who shouldn't be playing.
Player 3 - 39 R, 36 RBI, bWAR 0.2. A better player than bWAR gives credit to and who plays a very good defensive 1B.

There is no longer any way to defend his performance this year. His being in the lineup is a result of lack of options. We don't have anyone on the bench that can play 1st base and our next option on the farm is AJ Reed.

Taylor Jones is an interesting prospect: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=jones-000tay, but White and Kemp's lack of options are probably preventing both he and Tucker from getting called up. That's frustrating so the popular opinion on here is "cut White", but believe it or not he and Kemp both have value they aren't going to let them go for free unless that's the only choice they have.

We sure could have used JD Davis over the last month and until the break (.270, 8 HR for the Mets), and maybe one of the lottery tickets we got in return (all of them are doing terrible at A level btw) will turn into something, but as it currently stands that transaction is a cautionary tale for not trading guys away just because for the moment you have congestion at a certain position and they are not performing yet.

I do think White has to go one way or the other when the time is right, but especially with the perspective we should all have about how unpredictable prospects performance at the MLB level can be, it's moronic to let him go for nothing when you don't absolutely have to. Which is exactly why Luhnow hasn't yet.

Might as well throw Jake in there too. He's sporting a .206/.253/.349 62 wRC+ over the last month.

The unfortunate reality about Tyler White is that the longer he continues to play, the bigger the sample size teams have of him, the more the data shows that he's not an effective big league player. His value is effectively zero.

We've been trying to make White a thing, and it's just not happening.

We will likely give him away for almost nothing. He will be maybe a small side piece in a bigger trade, or we let him go.

I agree that his value is at an all-time low and that at this moment he is not an effective major leaguer. To say he has no long-term value or potential is going against what the smartest organization in baseball thinks. I am always going to bet on the opinion of Luhnow & co. over some reactionary & frustrated fans with no skin in the game.

Yeah man, I'd like to see some of this big 6'7" 1b who is raking at AAA and I'd like to give Tucker another chance over watching Jake and Kemp and White flounder but I also don't have to answer for the depleted minor league system when we dump the above guys and the new guys don't pan out and now we have to trade prospects for some Matt Adams journeyman type who is only slightly better than the guys we released.

Obviously White is not going to be the centerpiece of any trade, but he's going to get at least a lottery ticket for him. If he had "effectively zero" value, he would have been released by now.

Who is this kid? Don't recall hearing his name. Is he playing 1st on a daily basis at Roundrock? Who plays most of the 1st for the Hooks?

What does Reed do in Roundrock? DH, bench, first?

And dumb question of the day...once your on the 40 man I assume you can't be removed unless you are cut, is that correct?

The strangest thing about White is that he has a good eye and plate discipline, but he flinches at 1st pitch fastballs right down the middle. It's like he has battered syndrome or something. I'm guessing he is feeling the pressure.

He's not feeling any pressure because there is none. With no one able to play SS except Bregs and no one to play 3B but Yuli he knows he isn't going anywhere.

Now when Correa comes back it'd a different story...He's F-ed.

He's another gem of a draft pick by Luhnow and a late bloomer - 19th rounder in 2016. Was a P-1b @ Gonzaga. Was thought to be more of a pitcher early in his career but started to really hit for average (no power) late in his college career and was drafted as a 1b. Really didn't do squat his first couple of years as a pro (combined for a .222 avg and .634 OPS at low and high A in 2017...

Broke out in a major way last year, .281, 32 2b, 18 HR & 80 RBI between 123 games at AA & AAA. This season he has gone .296/.397/.530/.928 w 13 HR and 49 RBI at Round Rock playing primarily 1b but also making 18 starts in the OF and 4 at 3b. Scouting report below says he's a good fielder, and he hasn't made an error at ANY position this year, which is pretty impressive considering he has moved around and is playing 3b for the first time as a pro. Would love to have a 6'7" vacuum cleaner that can hit for power playing 1b for us. Sounds like peak Richie Sexson to me!

To answer your question, it looks like he and AJ Reed have split time at 1b and Reed also DHs.

2016 Baseball Draft Report said:

Taylor Jones is a risky pick, as guys with long levers bring that boom/bust aspect to hitting. The boom of Jones's power currently outweighs any bust I feel about his long-term ability to make consistent contact as a pro.

"The fact that he's more than just a slugger helps give some wiggle room. Jones is an average runner who fields his position really well. He's also capable of moonlighting on the mound thanks to an upper-80s fastball and up-and-down curve.

Yankees-Red Sox just went past the 3-hour mark...still in the top of the 5th.

I guess MLB is happy with this

First inning was 58 minutes.

These teams always have long games, but this is absurd.

At this rate the Yankees will have 30.

Astros had an appearance scheduled for Osuna today but he didn't show. Rumors were floated that he was having his elbow examined by doctors. Asked about it, Osuna said he had nothing for that through a translator and Hinch said he is healthy. Something to watch...

checking in with Tyler White and his sparkling -0.6 WAR (according to baseball reference)..
That is kind of hard to believe. That WAR says he's just barely worse than the average major league player, a team of Tyler Whites would be only a few games under .500.

Haven't found one stated yet. Certainly given the circumstances surrounding his arrival, this doesn't endear him to the public. Hopefully it was just a miscommunication.

It's not above "average," it's above "replacement."

Replacement means something like a guy you could add to your team at basically any time for next to nothing.

Meaning a team of Tyler Whites would theoretically be a few games under .500 in AAA
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?

WAR can be a tricky metric.

the Astros have had negative WAR guys in recent years, but normally they got 50 to 75 AB's and they were gone. Not 200+ AB's like White has. That's one reason his situation is so strange
McInnis
How long do you want to ignore this user?

So the reference for WAR is not an average major leaguer? Are you saying it's an upper tier AAA player that any team could call up?

Yes, replacement level is considered a freely available (AAA or FA) player. An average full-time position player should have a season-end WAR of about 2.

I believe replacement level is based on about a 30% winning percentage...so a team of 2019 TWs would put you waaaay below .500.
