Straw would likely score on any extra base hit. You might need to check my math on that but it seems like it makes sense to stay on first and it situation.

Honestly, if you told me he was in the starting lineup in the playoffs batting 9th, I'd be good with it. At a minimum he needs to be our pinch runner. He could win you a ballgame with his speed alone.

I want Straw taking every extra base he can. Because he's scoring from 2B on singles every time. And you can't hit into a DP when he's on 2B.

I agree with you instinctually - I'd definitely rather let a blazing fast guy run than watch yet another GIDP.

But I read or heard recently that mathematically you have historically needed an overall 75% success rate to make sending the runner a net positive, but now with so many more HR being hit, that % is going up because more batters can plate the run with one swing more often than ever.

So in late and close situations where you need one run and you have a guy that can get it done like Straw it makes more sense sending him, but that early in the game especially with no outs you risk not giving the heart of the order one more out to work with.

I agree in principle with you but in Straw's case is speed is so extreme it seems the risk is worth the reward. And we hit into so many DP's I think HInch should do everything he can to minimize that outcome. And in this case, when Straw didn't steal during Fisher's AB, Bregman promptly grounded into what should have been a DP. Until Profar sailed the throw that is.

I hear ya. He was 51/56 in AAA - seems like you'd send him all day, but I trust they have done the math.

I'm pumped that he has reached base 3/3 times. Imagine a timeline in which Straw hits well enough to hold down a starting OF job and Brantley can slide into the DH spot when George comes back.

And there is the yang. Fisher gets hosed and Brantley doesn't get a chance to hit with a man on base.

Watching a CS hurts less than watching a GIDP so the instinct as a fan is definitely to want to send the runner. I agree about sending Straw all day, but for a guy who is a sub 75% guy like Fisher I'm not sure.

And Fisher getting gunned down is the argument for not running I guess.

I still think its the right call. The throw was so bad it allowed the tag o the head as Fisher was sliding past. If its on the base he's safe.
