Astros control Jake freely until sometime in May I thought I heard

After that certain date, he can then refuse assignment

Jake has 1 option left I'm 99% sure.

It appears that you are correct in that Marisnick is not there yet. This article from earlier in the week lists four Astros on the 40-man roster as now being out of options:

White
Kemp
Stassi
Peacock

man I thought marisnick would have been out of options a long time ago, seems like that dude is always up and down.

I don't remember him being up and down until last year.

This is right. He has an option remaining, but 40 days more on the 25 man & he will reach 5 years of MLB service time, which gives him the right to decline an option.

If Tucker continues to tear the cover off the ball, it's going to be a tricky situation.

Sounds like Harper to the Phillies... just like I've been predicting all along.

EDIT: 13 years, $330 million total

Rodgers got touched up today. Altuve can't touch anything in the early going. Maybe one needs to pitch to the other, haha...

We have been spoiled by the embarrassment of riches the last couple of years in the starting rotation, but Peacock is a very good pitcher. Aside from 2017. if you think about maybe the 2 most noteworthy Astros teams since the advent of the 5-man rotation:

The team that made it the furthest in '05, the #s 4 & 5 starters were a rookie Wandy with a 5.53 ERA who was still 2-3 years away from being a good pitcher and Brandon Backe, who was like a poor man's Peacock. The team with the most wins in '98 had a lineup most similar to the current one, and the late Randy Johnson pickup obviously elevated that staff a ton, but prior to that the back end of the rotation was journeyman Sean Bergman and Pete Schourek, who we sold that August to Boston for like a bucket of BP balls.

Obviously none of those teams won championships and I do think we have a ring in part because our rotation was good enough that Peacock was edged out of it, but he was huge in relief in WS G3 & G7 when it counted the most.

I'd love to sign Dallas or even better make a strong move before the deadline, but as far as opening day rosters go, Peacock is one of the best #5 starters the organization has ever had.

And there's no guarantee that he'll be a starter, is there? Assuming everyone is healthy...

Bryce Harper to the Phillies is so boring.

True & obviously I'd prefer for him not to be, because that means we are fully healthy and James or someone else has stepped up and the 'cock can be a strong bullpen option and a spot starter.

My point is that even if he is the #5 starter to begin the year (which I think he will be), we are in good shape. But probably need for Miley to pull a CFM and James & Whitley to fulfill their potential in order to not make a move later in the season.

What if Colin is hurt and out for an extended time? Does that make Brad P the #4?....no offense but imo that is not a good sign for us if so.

I've said it multiple times and I think we really need to make a run at Dallas, if not at least another veteran who can take up space until the trade deadline/FW gets called up etc....

What happens (god forbid) if Justin V, or Gerit gets hurt and is out an extended time? You can NEVER have enough pitching. Never Ever

2016-2018 Peacock is a stud of a #5 starter

2013-2015 Peacock is a scary #5 starter

All of that is true, but every team is in that same boat. Last year's team is the first I can remember that had depth like what we had...and ironically we didn't need to use it until August, and even barely then, and our organization is so deep that Framber & James were even better than the guy they replaced.

Yes, you can never have too much pitching...but winning teams use their resources to make positions of need stronger and everyone prays for health and needs to have it for the most part to win a ring. No team ever had 5 lights out starters and another couple waiting in the wings. We have a solid staff and in case of injury hope that James & Whitley & Framber are as good as they have looked.

To answer your question, if JV or Cole is out an extended time I think we are still good enough to make the playoffs (like we were in '17 when we had a patchwork rotation for stretches)...but if JV or Gerit is out for the playoffs we ain't winning the WS and that's just part of the deal.

All that said, I would still like to sign Dallas but maybe upgrading at DH and/or 1b would help us just as much for cheaper.

Not sure if there are many options available right now for that.

Edwin Encarnacion comes to mind as an available upgrade but he's in SEA so trading within the division is always tricky.

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO PLAY BASEBALL IN PHILADELPHIA??? (All caps intended).
Mathguy64

If that contract doesn't have an opt out clause after 3/4 years then the Phillies got played badly and Harper ended getting less that he was being offered. Or reportedly was offered on a per year bases. I just don't get a 13 year deal. The only explanation is baseball GMs are collectively idiotic.

13 years is asinine. Budy saw this from some writer today.

"kids that aren't even born yet will be booing and throwing batteries at him by the end of the contract!"

To be fair in Philly, the same could be said if he'd signed a 5 year contract.

I wrote something similar on the BH contract thread, but this is not the guaranteed loser deal many are making it out to be.

1. 13 years from now that salary won't be a big deal. Salaries have nearly doubled since 13 years ago. Depends whether he hits a wall in his 30s or does a slow fade. The last 3 years are at @ $23M per. That's going to be Josh Reddick level money in 2031.

2. Harper just turned 26, entering his prime. At that point Pujols still had 2 MVPs and 9 years in which he was an All-Star/MVP vote-getter. Of course Pujols had hardly missed a game and Harper is a little gimpy...

I think it's interesting that his age-based similarity scores on BR bring up Frank Robinson and Andruw Jones. Frank Robinson was still an all-star at 38 while Jones was washed up at 35. Could go either way.

With the majors so close, it amazes me that guys like him can't do a little more to get in better shape. Baseball is their job. It's not like he's working 8-10 hours a day and can't find the time to hit the gym. I mean, what else does he have to do in the offseason?
