There are a few people here that really can't stand Arenado. I don't understand it.

Yea, they act like somebody just gave Adam Everett $255 million.

My concern as a Rockies fan wouldn't be Arenado's deal, it would be the 24 other guys. The NL West is a tough division, and I haven't seen anything that inspires a lot of confidence in that front office.

I live in Denver, but am by no means a Rockies fanboy. Discounting what he does away from Coors is fine if you are any other team, but you can't ignore that he plays 81 games there a year. Sure - others would get an offensive bump too, but he's their franchise player. At a certain point, that carries a premium unless you are able to lock them up long term. Look at what Trout will command with the Angels when/if he hits FA.

His combination of offense and defense is pretty special. I'm not saying he's a HOF player, but he's the best chance currently on the Rox and without him, they are Chuck Nasty and that's it. If he walked next year, they wouldn't stand a chance at signing anyone even close to comparable.

We may face the same type of issues in a few years depending on the continued improvement of Correa and Bregman.

It's easy to understand...He started in lieu of Bregs during the WBC.

It really is that simple.

While I agree he stunk it up during that stretch it's crazy to think he's not an elite player. He's not a once in a generation type player but he's one of the better position players in the game right.

the Rockies are desperate for relevancy.

2019 will be year 27 for the franchise. The team has only reached the 90-win plateau 3 times in its history.

only won playoff series in 2007. Maybe something big can happen in the next 3 years with Arenado

of course where the Rockies really screwed up is with Blackmon.

going to pay him $21 MM each of the next 3 seasons...after he posted a robust 0.8 WAR last year.

that's why organizations like the Rockies are the Rockies. Most of their contracts backfire because they overpay after a guy has a big year

I actually like him a lot. He seems like a good dude and as a high school 3rd baseman I'm partial to the hot corner.

I just don't think he's as good as some rate him or worthy of the deal he got. The numbers back it up that he's a product of Coora somewhat and not really on the same level as the elite games anyway.

Getting back to the Astros, the offense went woof today. 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, 12 K's.

The original Arenado discussion came up when that MlB Network list had him as the 3rd best player in baseball

Which is a joke

Here is some perspective.

Arenado was 7th last year in qualified 3rd basemen in wRC+. If you look at 17+18 then he moves up to 6th. 16-18 and he's back down to 8th.

He's just outside of the top 5 at his position as a hitter (ignoring his awesome glove).

For a SS who's finished in similar spots, it would be Gregorius, Bogaerts, Trea Turner. Maybe 3B is a little deeper than SS, but in general, a SS is more valuable than a 3B.

Would you think to pay those guys that much?

I'll be honest, I really don't care if we win all our games or lose them all. Spring Training has shown to be a poor way to judge in year performance from the best I can tell.

But if he plays 81 games at Coors then he is worth it.

Yeah, that's not where I was going. Just wanted to talk Astros instead of Rockies!

Maybe the team was doing their best RC offense impersonation, haha.

I looked it up. We're like 215th in slugging as a team vs below avg competition.

Good post. I don't really agree with the conclusions you draw, but I'll stop boring the rest of the group with non-Astros talk.

So I had completely forgotten that Tyler Ivey was in the Astros system until today. Do we know why he transferred? Was it a grades thing or maybe he had to be closer to home?

It was a disagreement between him and they perceived treatment of the coaches towards him. I.E. playing time and one-on-one training time.

I was excited about Ivey after his fish year. He had a really good hook

Blackmon will be 32 years old for the 2019 season.

so the Rockies are paying him big bucks for his age 32, 33, and 34 campaigns. That is risky.

would feel better if his salary were in the $12-$15 MM per year range

Does anyone else miss the NL Astros or is that just me? I realize the AL brought us a World Series, AL Pennant, consecutive appearances in the LCS, 3 appearances in the playoffs, a Cy Young winner, among other things. I just miss the history and our opponents.

Also, Rockies extended Arenado 8 years with an option for 2021 for $260 million.

I absolutely miss the NL central. Selig straight up black balled Crane but it is what it is. 9 pm games are here to stay
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

What do I miss?

  • Cubs and Cardinals rivalries. I couldn't care less about the Pirates, Brewers, and Reds.
  • Road division games that start at normal times

What don't I miss?

  • The DH - I thought I was a purist, but now I know I was just a moron. There are times that watching NL baseball can just be tough these days. The DH needs to be for all MLB.
  • Games against the Rangers not meaning anything
  • Our old ownership / GM dysfunction - no regrets moving to finalize that sale

Absolutely love the AL move so far (and the results), and think it'll be even better in 5, 10, 15 years than the NL ever was for us. Rangers are going to be a good rivalry if they're ever good again, and enjoy getting to go see them play in places like Yankee Stadium and Fenway more than once every decade. Hopefully another team in our division steps up as an actual rival. I miss the NL central mostly for the nostalgia of the rivalries.

Yes and no. Mainly no.

I grew an NL fan and thought it was the best because that's what I knew. Now in the AL, I feel like there are more good teams consistently and the DH is far superior to the pitcher batting. It's fun playing Boston, New York, and Arlington, but I also miss the Braves, Cards, and Cubbies. I hated it at first, but the AL has grown on me. I just wish we didn't play so many damn late west coast games.

I think we're a really good fit in the AL but not so much in the AL West.

I'd like a realignment that would put us and the Rangers with 3 other teams in this time zone

That just won't happen. There aren't enough teams in the west, and there are too many in the central that are close (Chicago, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City). Who do you bump to the west? That would require more cross-league switches.

Well, this is a Rockies thread. So obviously them.

I want expansion. Add a team in San Antone & Nashville or New Orleans.

Create new divisions of 4.

Shuffle leagues for a few teams to make common sense divisions.

Change the playoffs to one wildcard. Make the WC winner play the worst division winner in a 3 games series for the final spot.
jkag89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
IMO there should be no expansion until all franchises are on solid footing.

Neither the Astros or Rangers are going to agree to a franchise in San Antonio. For SA to get a team it needs to show it can support a team, a good way to start is actually support their minor league team, the Missions. New Orleans does not do a great job of supporting its minor league team either.
Farmer1906
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I don't blame anyone for not supporting the minor leagues. San Antonio supports the Spurs very well. But then again it shouldn't be hard to support them. I wouldn't mind if Canada got another team. It would be neat to put a team in Mexico too.
Mr.Bond

Yup. New Orleans just lost their triple A team due to lack of support
