I think had the Astros been able to secure Marwin for that price back in November then they would have jumped all over it. The likely problem is that Boras and Marwin were asking for a lot more so then had to go to a backup plan and, therefore, made Diaz acquisition. Astros could not afford to wait it out. With Diaz and Brantley, it now does not make sense to sign Marwin to that deal.

Ironic how Boras is willing to go backup plan for a guy asking for a 4/60 deal but not for a guy asking 10/350

Look on the bright side...At least our games will shorten by about 45 mins without Marwin's ABs.
Someone else is going to have to argue obvious strike calls this season.

Brad Ausmus in the 18 inning game vs the Braves is up there too. Chris Burke's HR. Bregman game 5. Billy Hatcher game 6.

This is probably 100% what happened. Boros said the starting point is 4-$60. Lunhow said 2-$20 or 3-$25. Boros said no. Lunhow went out and got his replacement. Simple.

And the only thing dumber than Facebook posters is the people on twitter.

Altuve game 5 as well. Things seemed pretty bleak before that GS.

Should have paid Marwin to stay. Tells me we are still in hunt for Harper.
At this point, I'm not sure how you can reasonably look at all the evidence and not conclude Harper to the Astros.

I forgot it was Marwin who broke up Darvish's perfect game with two outs in the ninth.

We didn't offer 10.5 a year? Find that odd
That tells me that our FO agreed with many on this board that 2017 was the outlier and unlikely to happen again.

Thanks for the memories though. That HR in the 9th inning of game 2 was one of the biggest in franchise history.
yep, the 'stros made the right decision. Would not have offered Marwin $10 MM per year either

I would've had no problem paying him $10MM per year for 2 years if we had a spot for him.

Once we signed Brantley Marwin became a bench player.

Diaz and Brantley make Marwin obsolete. I wish Marwin the best with the Martwins. Game 2 is my favorite game of all time. So Marwin will always have a special place in my baseball heart.

Can't believe we let Marwin go. He was always a solid guy you could count on. It feels like we just kicked him to the curb. I mean the man could play anywhere on the field.

It's not like we cut him. We let him walk and improved the team.

Brantley is a clear better hitter in LF and Diaz just may be as well in the IF.

I will always have found memories of Marwin. Great utility player that hit his stride the season we need him most.

I think other posters are right that we would have gladly agreed to this at the beginning of free agency. But while they tested the market we effectively replaced Marwins utility with better offensive potential. Best of luck to him with the Twins. Mad respect for him.

Marwin has no one to blame but Boras.

Taking a long time to receive offers is not a bad strategy, that usually will get you the best return. Boras is notorious for this.

But he over estimated Marwins value badly, and he could have either stayed with the Stros or had better offers early in which he turned down.

It is Boras's job to understand the market, even if it is a changing market.

Kershaw already shutdown indefinitely with 'an arm issue'.

Dude is made of glass.

Wouldn't be a bad idea for the Dodgers to jump into the Keuchel market.

Like you said, Boras is notorious for this, that's the expectation when you hire Boras, and more often than not it works out or he wouldn't be the agent to so many prominent players. If Marwin wanted to stay with the Astros, chase another ring and still be handsomely paid (just as well he's going to get paid to battle for the wild card for the Twins, it turns out), he could have hired any agent.

Everyone loves to hate on Boras, but no one forced Marwin to hire him at gunpoint. Best of luck in every game other than against us & thanks for the memories but the truth is, Marwin has no one to blame but himself.

also, we don't actually know what the astros offered marwin, perhaps it was less than what the twins offered

Fair point. These comments are only 3 days old and the "if not from us" I take to mean that we didn't offer at least one of them...

Quote:

Q: Any further thoughts on Dallas Keuchel or Marwin Gonzalez, who both remain unsigned?
Crane: I think those guys have had offers, if not from us from other teams. Those are offers they didn't take. Hopefully they'll land in the right spot and certainly it could be one or two of them might be back here. Who knows?

Q: Have they had offers from the Astros?
Crane: I'll let Jeff comment on that.

My main point is that you hire Scott Boras when your #1 objective is to get paid, not when it's to stay with your team. No hard feelings towards Marwin at all for doing what is best for him and his family, but I don't think it's realistic to paint him as the hometown guy that desperately wanted to stay but couldn't get a decent offer from the Astros.

IMO Both sides are better off. We are get what will hopefully be an offensive upgrade that we didn't have to give up much for making $575k & keeping money available for a big fish. Marwin gets paid more and has what I would think is a much better shot of getting everyday ABs.
