He didn't goto Boston, New York, Cleveland, LA, or Chicago. This is good news.

The Phillies are "interested and in" on superstar Bryce Harper, but rumors of Harper signing today in Philadelphis are unfounded. (Jon Heyman, Fancred)

sounds like these are truly just rumors and everyone's time is wasted...

Same person probably said Edwin encarnacion had signed with us.

Part of me thinks Boras is behind those "leaks". Trying to get the other suitors riled up.

I still kinda think 1/31 or 2/1 could be a big day in the Harper sweepstakes. Boras is probably still trying to get a team to bite on a 10+ year mega deal, but I don't think Harper wants to go too far into Feb before he knows where he'll be attending spring training. If no one bites in the next few days, maybe he'll start looking at other options and get contractually creative with a team that he would prefer to play for...

Harper signs with the Astros on Jan 31. He hits 48 homers this year sandwiched between Altuve and Correa.

Harper will not be singing with the Astros. He's worried about getting outshined by Tucker.

If you mean getting outshined in terms of body hotness, I totally disagree

In other words.. were about to sign Keuchel and Marwin for cheap?

Two years, $19 million per, with an mutual option for the third for $22 - that'd be my guess.

That would be great. If you don't keep on expecting him to be Cy Young Keuchel and just appreciate him for what he is, still a hell of a pitcher at that salary, as good as anyone else's #3-4 guy and tough as nails in the postseason.

Marwin I just don't know how cheap we would have to get him for me to like it. 2017 was an anomaly and he will go back to being what he is, which is a guy that hits .260 with a bit of pop and a lot lf versatility... and the bottom line is that if he needs to play in the OF you're not doing great because he's not a great hitting or fielding OF...and at this point we have enough infield personnel that I feel like he's going to come in as the third string guy at any given IF position.

Don't you disrespect Marwin like that.

I don't think he's a Jake Marisnick level defender but he's a solid OF defender with a plus arm when out in the short LF.

Not elite defender but I'd consider him a good defender when playing LF especially when you take into account he's not a dedicated OFer.

I just have a feeling Marwin wants a role as a starting position player and wants to be paid like one. I'm not sure we have a spot for him in that role and not sure he wants to be a 4th OFer/spot start IFer/pinch hitter.

I agree on Keuchel. At this point you need to bring him back to keep some continuity in the rotation and for the playoff experience factor. I love Marwin but paying for him isn't the right call. If you get Keuchel signed that leaves you with 1 hole to fill. You have James, Framber, Whitley as likely candidates. You could cycle through those guys throughout the year to keep them fresh for playoff time.

Agreed. After thinking about it more, I'm fine with bringing Keuchel back on a 2 yr + option type of deal. I do worry a little about attitude problems after getting rejected by the market but the pro of having a rock solid #3 starter in a currently uncertain rotation seems to outweigh any hypothetical cons.

If we're considering bringing Marwin back for $12-15mm next year, part of me is confused why we didn't just go ahead and sign Cruz. For the same price, I think we need a middle order DH bopper to protect our young studs more than position versatility that Diaz should now provide. Just doesn't seem like Marwin fits into the puzzle now for the reasons you mentioned.

Not disrespecting him at all. I said he wasn't a "great fielding outfielder", and he is not. Like you said, he's got a good arm and he does well out there considering he played something like 15 games total in the OF as a minor leaguer...but everything out there characterizes him as "capable" or "solid", Not even above average.

If he hits like he did in 2017, he's a good enough fielder that you want him out there at ANY position - 1b, LF you name it. If he hits like he has the rest of his career you're happy with him maybe at 2b or SS where he is an above average bat and his fielding is much stronger...but his career batting numbers and a below-average glove in LF is not something I would be excited about at the price he is likely to command. At that price he needs to be on a team where he can get 500 PA as a middle infielder and provide insurance at other spots.

If you take the supposed 5 year, $90M offer we made to Keuchel in 2016 and subtract what he earned in 2017 and 2018, you're looking at $22.55M per year for three years. Do you go back and say, "want to consider this again?" Maybe give him an opt out after two years if he wants to test the market again.
iBrad

Not sure an opt out after year two would matter. Current CBA runs through the 2021 season, so we'll probably see the same thing the next couple of offseasons.

That makes a lot of sense. We offered that when Dallas had all the leverage. Now he doesn't and if we still offered that then I think it would be a sign of respect. We thought you were worth this when you won a Cy and we still do.

Random thought on Tucker. I thought he looked terrible in his time last year which was a fair assessment I think. It got me thinking though about Mike Schmidt. His first full year, playing regularly he hit .196. He got better though. Obviously.
