Why wouldn't Jake just change his approach at the plate to hit more line drives? He has power to get a lot of extra base hits and that could allow him to increase that batting average.

Or maybe he needs Lasik.

Jake got his issues figured out in AAA and was his old self again when he came back up. The problem is that he's a .225 type of hitter with little margin for error. He can't be afforded the opportunity to work through a slump because his slumps put him below the Mendoza Line.

If only it were that easy! He has tried hard. There are a lot of articles about all the work he has put in.
The lack of contact and walks is more discouraging than the type of contact he makes. Even on fastballs in 2018 he was only even making contact with just over half of them, which was near worst in the league.

Well that's like saying that I should've changed my approach in HS and maybe I'd be in the bigs by now.

If you can't do it you can't do it. Doesn't matter what your approach is.

At this point Jake is Jake and he's just not talented enough offensively. Elite defensively but lacking offensively. Great clubhouse guy and overall a decent ML player.

Exactly. One of the things that drives me crazy is people over playing the "he should just change his approach or do this or that differenlty." If it were that easy half the league would hit .400. you are 100% spot on with Jake. its unfortunate because he is an easy guy to pull for.

I understand that it is difficult, but MLB hitters adjust their swing almost every offseason. I just notice that he seems to get a lot of loft upon contact and thought less loft would be desirable given his speed.

Again, I understand that it is simple in theory but actually very difficult.

I don't think Jake has a role on this team anymore. Sure he can be a "CF closer" but I think it must more valuable to have more guys that can hit. Between the starting 3, Kemp, & Tucker you might have 5 above average hitting outfielders.
Are we calling Tucker an "above average hitting outfielder"???

I think I can handle 225 Jake with decent power if he walks q little more and doesn't strike out as much.

Usually the catcher is a foregone near cancer bat, if we got realmuto, it would free up the lineup some to where we wouldn't need to depend on CF for a bat.

Again, the problem is that regardless of his swing path, he's not making contact. You can't hit a line drive if you don't hit the ball.

2015: 11.2 degrees; 82.9 MPH
2016: 9.2 degrees; 84.1 MPH
2017: 15.9 degrees; 85.7 MPH
2018: 8.3 degrees; 91.7 MPH

Looks like he has tried a lot of approaches.

Thanks for the stats! I was going off of what I saw rather than stats. I should have looked that up first.

No worries and it's easy to do.

My eyeballs tell me that Jake has the same huge hack regardless of pitch type or location and that occasionally he gets lucky and sends one for a ride but that you can't have that in your lineup even if he plays Willy Mays defense but WAR says despite the whiffs he's actually more valuable overall than Tony Kemp, who looks like he does a lot more things well than Jake.

Keyword: might

Tucker clearly projects to be an above average player. That is why we're not giving him away to get JT or someone similar.

Kemp has better plate discipline and is better at making contact. That's why people tend to gravitate towards him over Jake. I'm a huge fan of Tony Kemp the hitter and he's an ideal guy to stick in the 9-hole in this offense. If he wasn't such an inferior outfield to Jake, this wouldn't even be a discussion. But he is, so when defense is considered, it's easy to make the argument that Jake is the more valuable player.

The other thing to consider is that unless we move Reddick, we'll have two lefties starting in the outfield along with Tucker waiting in the wings to see if he can get it going. I think having an additional right handed bat on the bench and for the occasional platoon start for Reddick when we're facing a lefty works in Jake's favor. That, and he's a defensive upgrade over everyone late in games. You'll never be inserting Kemp for his defense.

It'll be interesting to see how the outfield shakes out this year.

Here is a comprehensive article on remaining FAs with predictions.

They have us signing Clay Buchholz for the back of the rotation. They also have Dallas to San Diego & Marwin the LAA.

I wouldn't hate that for the right price. If Strom can help him keep his 2018 form and we can squeeze 15-20 starts out of him.

I remember him coming off an injury in 2013 pitching in the World Series without being able to put hardly anything on the ball and battling his way through that game 4 @ StL where they were down 2-1 in the series to the Cardinals. That was impressive.

Dallas to San Diego would be about the most Keuchel thing he could do. Go sign for a team buried in 5th in a tough Division. That certainly would answer the question of whether winning or money were more important.

Mortonv2.0? Sure

I have confidence that if they sign someone like him Strom can get him back into form.

Why does that make it "Keuchel thing to do"?

This is Dallas's only real shot to cash in. I don't blame him or anyone that gets money.

If Houston offers you 2 year, 42 M and San Diego offers 5 year, 100 M. Which one are you taking?

To me SD would be an ideal spot for him as an Astro fan. It's not helping a division opponent or an AL rival. The odds we see him in the WS are slim.

He was in great form last year. For him it was more about staying healthy.

Agreed. If I were him and had already won a world series, won a cy young, satisfied with career accomplishments, I'd take the most money in the best city.

$100 million to live in San Diego would do just fine.

The Padres rotation sucks, but their lineup should be very solid - Kinsler, Wil Myers, Hosmer, Renfroe, Franmil Reyes. They have been rebuilding for a couple of years and have one of the best farm systems in baseball with some young impact guys coming up. That they are in the conversation for Keuchel means that they are trying to bring proven veterans in and not afraid to spend some money. You never know - look at the Braves.

Plus pitching in the NL making half his starts in Petco. He already has a ring and a Cy Young. I like the try to go be part of something fun and if all else fails get paid huge and live in socal a lot better than just going to be another guy on the Yankees.

From a few days ago that I don't recall seeing on here

Quote:

The Astros offered Keuchel a five-year, $90MM extension early in the 2016 campaign, but he turned it down, according to Rosenthal.

At that point, Keuchel was a 28-year-old coming off an AL Cy Young-winning season. Now 31, Keuchel hasn't been quite as effective since his career-best campaign, though he remains an above-average starter and should rake in a high-paying multiyear deal before the offseason is out.

Having made $22.35MM in salaries since he rejected the Astros' offer, Keuchel will need to sign for $67.65MM as a free agent in order to match what Houston offered him, Rosenthal notes.

I'm going to start a new thread with that though so as not to get lost in the Astros discussion. Then can update predictions as major signings happen.

While maybe slightly true, Bauer's handling of the situation was very irresponsible and just odd, bordering on creepy. As the professional with a verified Twitter account and 135K followers, he's got to show more restraint. A response, fine. A quick back and forth? Okay. Continuing to mention her in 30+ Tweets, even after being blocked, and ultimately unleashing his army of followers on her? Dude needs some help.

But yeah, this backfired on the girl, too. She was obviously seeking a little attention and got much more than she bargained for. I mean, isn't that what everyone is hoping for when they respond to a celebrity's tweet! She definitely doesn't deserve the harassment she's getting from random Twitter users, but that's Twitter. If you choose to play with fire, you're likely to get burned.

I listened to the Colin McHugh podcast today and it was pretty good.

It was recorded in the early part of the 2018 season but him and LMJ were solid. Some good stories, little random banter, and lots of insight to how they see the game now.

Good stuff

I was going to post this too. I listened to it yesterday and enjoyed it. I liked the baseball insight, but also the b.s. about life. I think they were on to something in how baseball doesn't really market up"heroes" versus "villians." Those were some interesting takes.

I will listen again. I'd like to hear McHugh sit down with Bregs, Jake or Dallas (though with him moving on, it may not be likely).
