3 years for Charlie is ballsy.

Regardless now we're in a pretty sticky situation and one that I think pretty much puts the heat on Luhnow to trade for a starter.

2/30

The deal also includes a third-year option that could be as low as $1 million if Morton misses significant time over the first two years because of injury and could be worth as much as $15 million if he remains healthy.

Thought the same when I read this tweet... he's almost doubling his total MLB earnings over the next 2 seasons

I hate to see him go, but that is awesome

Then main reason I don't see Harper in Houston is that he probably wants to play in either NY, LA, CHI, or maybe PHI. The Astros will have to pay a premium to get him to commit to Houston long term. The Nats offered 10 years for $300M. It seems the Astros would have to go something like $32-35M per year to get him to listen.
this is what logic tell me as well......my astros fan boy in me is telling me he wants to play on one of the best current rosters in the league and compete for a title, hang out with Bregs in the clubs, enjoy the tax benefit of TX, and bang texican chicks.
And be around this/these

Harper is Mormon, doesn't drink and is married to his high school sweetheart.

He admits to "occasionally drinking coffee during the season"...but I don't think he's going to be "hanging our with Bregs and banging texican chicks" and ogling his teammate's wife unless he's a real scumbag. If he was anything like that, we wouldn't stand a chance against NYY or LAD anyway.

I know this is not nearly as exciting as your prepubescent rock star fantasy of what his life should be like, but it's actually helpful for us that he's a solid human and his priorities are probably more like chance to win a WS, good $ and good place to raise a family.

I like CFM to the rays. Fun, young team, and he'll obviously put in a good word with Archer so he'll sign in Houston once his contract in Tampa is up

I wonder if he would have taken the qualifying offer (1 year, $18M) over 3 & 30. I guess he would have, or we would have offered it and at least gotten the draft pick out of the deal.

I would have to wait on further explanation but it sounds like he could make up to 3/45 if he stays healthy

If so, then it makes even less sense that we didn't make the QO. Zero chance he takes that over 3 years at nearly the same $ per. Maybe Luhnow severely underestimated the market for Morton?

Or the rays are severely over paying??

The two things can both be true at the same time. The market is what someone is willing to pay for him. Time will tell whether the Rays overpaid or not.

Luhnow might have made a good move by not overpaying and committing long-term to Charlie while also missing an opportunity to get a nice pick out of losing him. Luhnow doesn't whiff very often but that appears to be the case here.

Hate seeing him go, but I wonder if our front office just had too many concerns with him landing on the DL every year.

I think it tells you that Lunhow and the Astros doctors might know a lot about his physical condition.

We'll always have game 7, and CFM will always be a legend.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Chuck had said that he'd be happy finishing his career in Houston, and that he didn't want to play long. He might have taken the QO, even though it wasn't necessarily the better deal. If Houston didn't think he was worth that much, better to not make the offer
Harry Dunne

Good point.

Hard for me to believe he's not worth $18M for one year, but you're right I haven't seen the medical charts.

One of the teams blew it. I hope it wasn't us. I guess we will see

I tend to trust the front office. There is another player out there...for which the Astros are saving that $15 MM

I freaking love Charlie Morton, but this was the absolute right decision to make. I don't see any way in heck he throws more than 250 innings over the next two seasons. I would have happily given Charlie a QO for a year; and I think we should have, but I have zero problem with them not wanting to sign him for 2 years.

We offered 1 year and 1 option year right after the season ended. It was probably for under the QO, but I can't imagine it being that much less than what Tampa offered. I guess he wanted to comfort of 2 years.

He's only made 40 million prior to this season... guaranteed another 30 is a lot to him.

17 WS team role players slowly going away.

McCann
Gattis
Margo
Chuck

I know it's a part of the game and some needed to go. Just kinda sad to think about it

Its a good year to reset that, and have the 19' roster be all WS champs.
