Doesn't rule out signing one of the two. Keep in mind, there's a chance either JV's or Cole's contract is off the books after next season.

Coles contract isn't that big. JV's is but Det is still paying for some of it. Well get McCullers back and Whitley should be established hopefully. Well still need more pitching unless we trade for some before.

If we do keep Morton, we have to do a better job of managing his innings. Based on his career, 170 seems to be his wall. Tough to give a guy big money over two years knowing he'll need to spend some time on the DL during the dog days so he can be effective in October. That may have been the plan last year before Oakland and Seattle went on their magical runs and the idea of resting starters got put on the back burner.

I'm fine with keeping him though. Ultimately we need one more proven guy in the rotation.

Yanks get Happ

what a weird 2018 season he had, ERA of 4.18 in Toronto but FIP of 3.84; then ERA of 2.69 at NYY with FIP of 4.21.

Has anyone ever seen an ERA and FIP difference of 1.52?

If the Astros somehow landed Harper (which needless to say is incredibly unlikely), you can kiss a Springer deal goodbye, and quite possibly the same for Correa.

It hurts me to say this but I think Correa needs to prove he's worth a long-term contract this year. I think it's questionable right now.

Agreed. If we do sign Harper, Correa probably the odd man out of our long term plans.

Can you imagine being in the Yanks farm system? You're just sitting there watching them FA after FA knowing that's just another person in front of you. You've got to be praying for a trade, or your chances of ever seeing the field in the bigs are slim unless you're an elite talent.

Rangers... gross

If it really is the Rangers, I feel sorry for Morton. They are not a good baseball team and probably won't be for several years. Not how you would really want to end your career.

Would love to have CFM back, but the Rangers always overpay for players. So at least CFM would get a good padding for his retirement account.

As exciting as Harper would be, I believe the Astros are going to get Brantley. He would be an immediate upgrade in left field over what we got out of Marwin/Kemp offensively, and would allow us to at least try to keep the young core of guys on this team for the long term.

I mean, at the end of the day, if Morton picks the Rangers, it's because that was his preference. This is most likely his last contract/ final team of his career (barring trade) if he's to be believed that he's almost done. If he gets more money and wants to spend it in Arlington near the bottom of the division, all the best to him.

The Rangers? Who in their right mind would wanna finish their career pitching in that empty shltbox for a cellar dweller.

But hey...Unlimited HJs by the farm hands must be a big pull (puns intended).

The Rangers are going to dump everybody. They are not signing a big FA.

I posted the day the Astros lost in the playoffs that Lunhow would suprise us and make a play for Harper. It appears that may be the case. Not saying it is going to happen, but I'd be happy if it did. It would make this next years team greatER and give us some insurance down the road if Correa keeps struggling like he has been.

Like others I am not yet sold Carlos will be the franchise player everyone wants him to be. If he isn't that is okay if we are able to sign Harper. Harper has at least proven he can stay healthy (compared to Carlos) and he is still young. I am big time against long term deals like pujols got, cano, etc....BUT, Harper is at least still young entering his prime years, and it would give us another chance to win to the whole damn thing while Verlander is still here.

We have to be honest with ourselves here, we only have a year or two left and our championship window will most likely close. (the door is wide open for us right now)

Then main reason I don't see Harper in Houston is that he probably wants to play in either NY, LA, CHI, or maybe PHI. The Astros will have to pay a premium to get him to commit to Houston long term. The Nats offered 10 years for $300M. It seems the Astros would have to go something like $32-35M per year to get him to listen.

this is what logic tell me as well......my astros fan boy in me is telling me he wants to play on one of the best current rosters in the league and compete for a title, hang out with Bregs in the clubs, enjoy the tax benefit of TX, and bang texican chicks.

Boras on Harper sweepstakes : This is not a race where every car is labeled.

"This is not a car where every race is labeled." In other words, Boras saying clubs aren't being open about their interest level on Harper.

Boras: "We're certainly at a point where we understand clubs' interest level." Says Harper could sign soon or "a matter of weeks."

Boras on Harper: "We've had meetings and conversations with clubs...we could be meetings away from a deal, or we could be weeks away."

Boras on Nats: "I think when they say the door's open, I would certainly pay attention to what they say."

Boras said teams have been creative in pitches to Harper, including..."very graphic pictures" (?)

Boras on the Yankees saying they're out on Harper: "I haven't heard them say that... maybe they say those things to you."

On the Yankees: "When the nurse comes into your room with a thermometer, the issue isn't the temperature of the patient that day. It's their health when they're ready to leave the hospital. And they're not ready to leave the hospital."

Boras suggesting owners he's pitching Harper to want to build around him long-term. In other words, he isn't selling a short-term deal.

Via Scott Boras, it doesn't sound like Harper, or interested teams, want a shorter term deal for the free agent: "Owners are really after his legacy, they're after building a brand around him, a team around him. I just don't think there is an appetite from ownership for those types of things. And everyone that wants Bryce wants to make sure he's going to be there a long time."

Brantley on the proper contract is nice. The heaviest hitters are all righties, so the combo of Brantley and Reddick swinging lefty is a boost. Plus, Brantley has skills that age pretty well, so a reasonable contract would be optimal.

an agent's job is to make his client the most money possible. That is what he (Boras) is trying to right now. Whether a team decides to throw $500 mil at him is yet to be determined......but if nobody does, Harper might take that big money short term deal with an opt out clause

The Phillies expect Happ to sign elsewhere this week. Philadelphia was "unwilling to budge from a two-year offer." (Matt Gelb, The Athletic)
