Both Kelly and Weaver were one of their top prospects fairly recently.

Does the STL brass really believe they can contend next year? They fell off a cliff late in the season last year. The Brewers and Cubs are the class of the NL Central right now, and Pittsburgh isn't too bad either.

So they Goldy for some buy low prospects?

Hell...We got a shlt ton of those.

And while it does seem to be a bit of a snoozer so far just remember this off-season is young. We haven't even gotten to the Winter Meetings.

I will say this about Luhnow -- he doesn't overpay and he sticks to his guns. I wonder what the Astros offer was for Goldschmidt. STL gave up two fringe major leaguers and a minor leaguer.

If Eovaldi goes back toe the Red Sox, then we start running out of high-end SP options. Right now, we have a 2-man rotation. Then a couple young guys that may or may not pan out along with McHugh. While I love McHugh out of the bullpen last year, it remains to be seen if he can go back to a SP role effectively.

Still curious on who this "rock the fanbase" player is...

Eovaldi's agent wants him to stay with the Sox. The Astros are his second choice, but thinks he's staying in Boston. That is roughly what Nathan said.

I'd be good with Harper if we don't overpay, but chances are with Boras, the price will be much higher than the Astros would be willing to pay.

My outside the box wild ass guess is Hanley Ramirez.

Crushing news on Goldy. We are running out of time we need to make a play in the pitching market. My gut could be way off but I still feel like Harper is gonna sign with us

Eovaldi may or may not be on the table, it's easier to bluff the Red Sox into overpaying him. Regardless they really need to think hard about resigning Keuchel and get a deal done. With the way Cole pitched for us he's going to get a monster deal when he hits free agency unless Luhnow gets that done this offseason. Keuchel is our only LHSP, we need to keep him. I'm not nearly as concerned about missing out on trading for Goldshmidt as I am on starting pitching. I would hope they could also get a 1 year deal on Morton to keep him around again too. There are options out there, Luhnow has proven in the past he can sniff them out.

Kelly and Weaver were the "Tucker and Whitley" of the Cardinals minor league system like 2 years ago.

It's a risk, but aren't all deals that involve minor league players?

I imagine that an equivalent trade from us would have been painful, but not Whitley or Tucker painful.

Time to get the White Sox on the phone and work something out for Jose Abreau. Would be a good backup plan to Goldy

If they wanted to bring back Keuchel they would've done it before he became a FA and they were the only ones allowed to negotiate with him.

He ain't coming back

I'm still all for a Sonny Gray trade.

Offload all of our future injured prospects to the Yanks and turn Gray back into a Cy Young candidate.

We are a playoff team as-is and there will always be trades to be made, but once our prospects are gone, they are never coming back.

I trust in Luhnow and his player evaluation. If he likes our guys more than the guys we can get for them, I feel good about that.

We have 2 starting pitchers. I may be wrong but no team has made the playoffs with 2 starting pitchers. I don't know that right now we're a playoff team.

We have some legit holes in the roster as-is.

However, I agree with you here and have full faith that once it's all said and done JL will have built a playoff team by the time the season starts.

You're being a drama queen. 2 starting pitchers? I know you're a regular here and are usually solid so all due respect, but that's a "just started watching the Astros in September" level post. The only reason McHugh and Peacock were in the bullpen is because our "worst" SP was a former Cy Young winner, but they are both very solid starting pitchers & I wouldn't trade them for any other two back of the rotation SP in baseball. Only because you are spoiled from having the best rotation in modern history would you not be happy to have them in the rotation, as any other team in baseball would.

IF we had to go into the season with:

1. JV
2. Cole
3. McHugh
4. Peacock
5. James/Framber

That would still be one of the best starting rotations in baseball, and Morton's not gone just yet...and if he is, you can bet there will be a FA signing (or two).

There's also Whitley and Cionel and Armenteros and probably some other studs have never heard of (remember Framber started the 2018 season in AA and was not a top-20 organizational prospect).

Yeah we have some holes - who doesn't? A good portion of the league are FA right now and don't have teams, so by definition everyone has holes. Luhnow will fill the holes and even if he filled them with replacement level players (which he won't), we would still absolutely be a playoff team.

To think Peacock is a legit #4 SP is laughable. The dude had one serious good year two years ago. I'm not betting on him being anywhere near that good ever again. He's an average to below average #5 starter at best.

As it stands today the Astros have two starting pitchers who are legit. And this is coming from one of the biggest Colin fanboys out there. Their are holes in our pitching that need patching up

5. James/Framber

This would not be one of the best rotations in baseball.

JV - Stud...No comment
Cole - Stud...No comment
McHugh - Honestly I don't want him in the rotation. He's elite out of the pen and a weapon. He's a solid rotation piece but he hasn't started since 2017. Taking an elite BP arm and turning him into a starter is a big risk. Imagine if that doesn't work out and we're out his BP production and his starting results are nothing special. Plus I just flat out like him in the pen where he was incredible.
Peacock - Eh...Stat guys may have evidence to the contrary but it seemed like he regressed a bit in 2018. Having him in the starting rotation pitching every 4 days scares the hell outta me.
James/Framber - While they showed great promise (especially James) at the end of the day their sample sizes are small. Great prospects but question marks for sure.

Same with Whitley, Cionel, etc. They're great prospects and I'm excited for their future but to throw them into a rotation for an entire season is a big question mark.

So that's 3 starters in a row with what I consider big question marks. And while I'm not saying we're done, pack it in, see you in 2020...I just think we have some pretty glaring holes including rotation, catcher, DH, and 1B (depending on where Yuli ends up playing).

As I said earlier today it's early and JL is one of the best in the biz, but as-is I don't see this as a runaway division leader. We need just a couple more pieces to make that happen and I have full confidence we'll get there.
