He may have affection for the Astros, but Luhnow will not sign a 10 year deal that would hurt us long term.

I'm curious which Harper we would see. His big year of 42 HR and .460 OBP is four years distant come February. Now in year 8 of service, say he settles in as a .280 hitter with 30 homers and .400-ish onbase percentage for the next four years- with the remaining future unknown because of health and performance impacts. Is that worth $300 million?

I'm not saying his best years are done or anything. I'm just not sure this organization will be one to jump into the 10-year contract waters like the Angels did with Pujols years ago.

I wonder if any team will be willing to go 10 years?

This is exactly right.

He's a great player, but when you start looking at the numbers you realize that because he has mythical status in baseball, the overall results aren't quite as great as the hype suggests.

If you put Harper's last 5 seasons next to Josh Reddick's last 5 seasons and look at WAR, the bottom 3 of those 10 seasons beling to Harper. That's a fact.

Now I'm definitely cherrypicking a somewhat flawed statistic to make a dramatic point and Reddick is nowhere near Harper's caliber, but just the fact that the above statement is true should give anyone pause about giving Harper a long contract.

I want to sign Markakis to a two year deal.

Perfect fit for us IMO.

I do not want Markakis. He is 35 years old and has been a below average player for 2 of his last 3 seasons.

last year he played in 162 games.

He went .297/14/93

He would have been our best hitting outfielder and one of the best players on our team....lol

I agree. It seems like our biggest FA victories have been identifying underperforming guys like McHugh & Morton and getting great values out of them.

Beltran, McCann & Reddick were huge parts of the WS and I wouldn't undo any of those deals for the world, but we have not gotten great overall value out of overpaying old guys for services already rendered.

I wouldn't mind if we could get Markakis on a 1-yr, but does anyone really want to roll the dice on how he's going to be playing at age 37?

I agree. Pass on Harper.

he's had 3 seasons where he played in less than 120 games.

also trending toward becoming a big time one-true-outcome player.

and that has not been the 'stros formula for success

Harper is also average to below average as an outfielder. I want no business paying him 30 a year when he's in his late 30s.

Damn I really hope this falls through and we swoop in and trade for Goldy

They know they have some catching up to do. The American league has been far and away the best league for a few years now.

Agreed.

We need him as much as we SHOULD want him.

They also know the path through the NL is wide-ass open.

6/year 125 million for Corbin? Holy ***** No wonder Keuchel thinks he can get paid stupid money.....he can.

If we want to save some money, Logan Morrison might be a cheaper DH option. If he stays healthy and bounces back a little he could be a 40-50 HR type. He's in the Cris Carter mold, but he Ks less.

Are the Phillies the likely landing spot for Corbin?

Corbin is thought of as a better pitcher. He's younger and was ridiculously good last year.

I expect Dallas to get something like 5 years 100-110 M.

Yes. I read earlier that they "won't be outbid and everyone knows it".

Did you just say that LoMo is a 40-50 HR type?

Should be 30-40, not 40-50. When healthy he's done it. 2017 he was 38 HR in 149 games with a .868 OPS.

Gross. Must be getting him for cheap and think Stassi/Stubbs could make it as a future everyday catcher?
