Agree with a lot of that, but he's not a plus defender at SS, at least he wasn't last year. Below average at SS for his career. Decent at 3B and a bit above average as an OF.
I'm also always interested to see what kind of things this coaching staff can do with his approach. Remember Marwin was a punch and judy type hitter until the Astros had him lower his hands and add loft to his swing.Thriller said:
Yep. I think he's a bat that wont' hurt you and can fill in around the diamond as needed. If we have a similar situation with Carlos this year, I think he's better at 3B, with Bregman filling in at SS. If he's our utility players, his bat certainly plays and he'll provide average to just slightly below average defense. That's not horrible. He's 80% of Marwin at the least, at a cost of $2MM with 4 total seasons of control. It's a good way to deploy resources elsewhere. If we can make up the difference at C and DH, this is a plus move overall.
Me too...til he got called up and TEDded the bed.WelchAg said:
I would have been kind of pissed if we had given up Whitley for Paxton.

I am shocked the Yankees gave up their #1 pitching prospect for a 30 year old pitcher who has never pitched more than 160 innings and who has been good but not great. The Yankees have been really shrewd on most of their recent deals, but at this time, this one seems like the Yankees overpaid.
They may and we could still kick their ass if we may a few good moves too.mathguy86 said:
Their hated, bitter rival winning the AL East, winning 108 gamess, beating them in the ALDS and winning the WS may have had something to do with their decision making process.
I think the Yankees are about to to burn free agency to the ground for everyone else.
The Yankees' #1 prospect Sheffield ranks #30 on the MLB.com top 100 prospects. Tucker and Whitley are #5 and #8 respectively.iBrad said:
I'm not sure what they were ranked in NY's system, but the three prospects sent over for Paxton are now 1, 9, and 14 in the Mariner's system, so there's likely some legitimacy to the tweet about not including Whitley killing a deal. I think the Yankees overpaid, And I'm glad we didn't. Whitley might not match Paxton's production next season, but I bet he gets close the year after that and ultimately proves to be the better pitcher. Let's be honest, Paxton against the rest of baseball is not near as good as Paxton agains the Astros. I think Astros fans would be expecting more from him than we would have gotten.
Id give up Tucker if Goldy signed an extension.mazag08 said:
I would give up anything outside of Tucker and Whitley for Goldy.
