Seems like a decent trade. Dude had an OPS of 770 last year in 400+AB with 18 bombs. I'm guessing he is the one to replace Marwin?

Never heard of Thornton, I assume he didn't have much of a future with us?

perhaps similar to the situation with Morton...the front office realizes that they have already gotten the best from Marwin --- his 2017 season. That was his career year at the plate. He's not going to repeat those numbers. And Luhnow doesn't want to hand out a 3 or 4-year contract as a "reward" for that season. Let some other team do that

I agree we probably shouldn't pay Marwin what he will probably get paid, but go take a look at his numbers after the all-start break. He was one of our better players for sure.

I don't disagree with not paying Marwin. I was happy to see the Diaz deal, though he is a definite downgrade from Marwin. I have to believe we are looking at a significant upgrade elsewhere offensively. I guess we will see.

No way. If they were to offer that then he would've just gotten a QO for 17.9

I could see a base salary that was somewhat low but incentives to make the total value close to the $17.9 QO.

I was thinking a vesting option - once he'd reached a certain innings total, hence the offer above (just slightly) the QO but with the 2nd year.

Looking at Diaz's numbers, he seems to a good candidate for offensive improvement based on Astros analytic approach. He has a relatively low strikeout rate, along with a low BABIP and walk rate, but then also good power numbers. I am guessing they believe that his offensive numbers could take a significant jump with a more focused offensive approach based on identifying and attacking his pitches and areas of the zone.

Haven't been able to weigh-in. The Diaz trade is just masterful stuff yet again by Luhnow. Dude is primed to throw up around a 108-110 wRC+ but possibly higher. He's a plus defender at shortstop and could end up playing a ton of games if Carlos's back continues to cause him to miss for extended periods. Also not a free agent until 2023. This is exactly like the types of moves the Cardinals would make during their extended run of owning the NL Central.

Now go sign or trade for another big bat.

Re-sign Charlie Morton and let's go win the West again.
