My question in the situation has always been on the next time through the lineup: where does #2 hit? The lineup is now 1, 3, 4

The #5 hitter starts off the next inning and then you just go based on the lineup card...so the #2 and #3s the next time through the order bat like they are listed on the card. Batting out of order does not change what the proper order should be. The penalty is applied and then it is a dead issue unless you bat out of order again.

Looks like the Rangers are in the Ed Wade/Tim Pupura days. A few aging stars (Beltran/Hamels/Colon), a couple of solid vets (Andrus/Fister) a couple of guys with potential (Mazara/Gallo) and a bunch of garbage around it with not much in the minors.

And they haven't hit rock bottom yet.

IIRC the Astros hit their low a couple years after they sold everyone off. The decent vets we had (Oswalt, Berkman, Pence) weren't a part of the lowest of the low points. Even if they sell off everyone this year they're not getting quality Major League ready players back. Those players a couple years away.

They should be hitting rock bottom right around the time their MMPv2.0 opens up.

***Oh yeah...We only one bad contract we were attached too (Carlos Lee) and they have at least two (Odor and Choo).

Before the season started I heard on Dallas radio speculation that the Rangers GM wanted to make serious run at Ohtani but the ownership said no. Then he wanted to gut the team and was overruled again, because they wanted a more serviceable product to open the new stadium. Well that looks like it has backfired big time.

This is exaclty what I believe is going on and it is exactly what will keep you in no playoff baseball purgatory for a long, long time.

Good for them.

That Daniels came close to resigning at the start of the year was also speculated.

He's going to get called up, hit .210 and struggle. He is good enought to dominate AAA, but it just goes to show how big the leap is to the show. It's clearly mental for him.

He was 5-10 in his last three games with the Astros and continued to hit when he was sent down. I think he just got off to a slow start and was quickly coming out of it. I think he's ready for another chance.

He has 96 major league plate appearances. Lets tap the brakes on assuming he's never going to put it together.

900 more of failure and he can go hit 30+ homers for the Tigers, amirite?!

I was actually curious how our stars performed in their first ~86 ABs. Springer was remarkably similar:

Davis:

86 AB, 9 R, 20 H, 4 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SB, 1 CS, 8 BB, 29 SO, 0.233 AVG

Springer:

88 AB, 6 R, 20 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SB, 2 CS, 6 BB, 33 SO, 0.227 AVG

Glad we didn't write Springer's slow start off to it being all mental.

"good enough to dominate AAA" is something you say about guys who hit .333 or even .350.

.450??? through 100 at bats? If Bregman and Springer went to AAA for 100 at bats I doubt they would hit that.

As said above..he was hitting well before we sent him down. Its time. We need to quit giving at bats to Gattis. I love him, but its time.

I think JD deserves a shot at DH but I also don't think Gattis is cut. I don't see them parting ways with Gattis to hand over the DH spot to JD Davis.

I could see Gattis getting a DH stint and a couple rehab starts while JD gets some ABs but they aren't parting ways with Gattis until they know they have someone proven to step in. That can be JD is he shows that it clicks and he proves he belongs but not now.

I want to see Davis as soon as possible.

I would also much rather have Kemp on our team than Gattis or Jake.

Agree, I've had enough of Gattis...he either needs to conveniently have an injury and go rehab for a bit or just take a seat outside of 1 game/week.

I'm fine w/ Davis or White getting a shot at it
Agnzona

If JD could bat .275 w/ 25hr and 90 RBI that's a game changer for this line up.

What would be the rule on a veteran player like Gattis? Could he be kept on the 40 day roster and sent to Fresno? I've never really understood the "out of options" thing.
Ag_07

May not be 100% accurate...Players have a certain amount of options (times they can be sent down). Once they're out of options they have to designated for assignment. At that point they can accept the designation or choose to be a FA.

Basically, you can only send a player down so many times and once that's maxed out he becomes a FA.

I doubt Gattis has any options left.

If he is out of options, that means he must clear waivers before being sent down to the minors which means that another team can pick him up.

Every player has three years of options

If you get sent down in your first year, you lose one option, but you can be sent down as many times as needed per year and it will only count once in each season

I couldn't find a website that tracks that, but just looking at his stat sheet, it looks like he may still have an option or 2 left. Can anyone find anything different?

This from MLBTradeRumors:

Astros

Max Stassi, Brad Peacock

That does specify that these are players with less than 5 years of service time.

.... Welp, just found the kicker:

Quote:

Any player with fewer than five years of Major League service time and an option year remaining can be optioned to the Minor Leagues. Players with more than five years of service time must consent to being optioned.
http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/minor-league-options

Evan has 5 years, so he has to consent to an option.

I can understand Gattis, but even Jake's inability to hit is made up for by his baserunning and defense.
Agnzona

My thought is they would ask him would he like to retire or be released.

Yeah that's where I'm a little fuzzy. I don't understand how many options players get and how that's all determined.

I just know there are a limited number of options and after that you have to be DFA'd.

do we really need to carry 13 pitchers? could we option or release one and bring up an additional batter?

No and it makes even less since when you have mccugh and peacock who can both start and come out of pen.

Sipp is a wasted roster spot
