As ridiculous as this might sound, if I was the GM of a contender looking for a pitcher to bolster the lineup in the second half I'd think about trading for Bartolo before I traded for Hamels. Guaranteed to keep you in the game for six innings and his contract is nothing. Rather that than Hamels who will look like an ace one in every 5 starts

Cole had a 3.20 ERA in May.
Cole had a 3.34 ERA in June.

Bartolo had a 4.22 ERA in May.
Bartolo had a 7.36 ERA in June.

"Ridiculous" would be an understatement.

I get what you're saying, but it comes down to prospects. Are you going to sleep better at night giving up prospects for Hamels (+2019) or if you do it for Colon. I love big sexy, but if I'm a GM, I'm not giving up any significant talent for his services for the remainder of 2018.

Colon has been a fun story, but he's essentially been an innings-eater since mid-May. Teams aren't looking for innings-eaters at the deadline.

Colon actually has a better whip and nearly identical FIP to Hamels. It isn't ridiculous to think that in my opinion. Hamels has been very fortunate to not give up more runs over the season.

Hamels having a down year is about the worst thing that could've happened this year. Really needed him to be the ace from a couple years ago so we could get max value. Right now it's going to be tough to get **** for him with out taking on his contract too.

Cole Hamels' ERA the past 3 seasons has been 3.65, 3.32 and 4.20 (AL)
Bartolo Colon's ERA the past 3 seasons has been 4.16, 3.43 and 6.48 (mostly NL).

Cole Hamels' WAR the past 3 seasons has totaled 12.3.
Bartolo Colon's WAR the past 3 seasons has totaled 2.5.

Cole Hamels' WAR this season is 1.9.
Bartolo Colon's WAR this season is 0.7.

Cole Hamels' ERA the past 2 months has been 3.20 and 3.34.
Bartolo Colon's ERA the past 2 months has been 4.22 and 7.36.

Cole Hamels is 34.
Bartolo Colon is 45.

Yes, it is ridiculous to think that teams would be more interested in Bartolo Colon than Cole Hamels at the deadline.
gigem1223

Fair enough. I don't argue Hamels isn't the better pitcher, he just hasn't been playing like it THIS season. Yes his era is better, but his FIP and whip numbers are not good. Bottom line, I wouldn't trade for neither if I was a contending team. The only thing Hamels could bring is a solid 4/5 guy with post season experience.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah im not arguing Hamels has really been as good as his ERA, but any contender (division or wildcard) has a guy in their 4 slot that they like better than Colon so trading anything for him makes little sense (and Texas wont let him go for free).

Hamels would still slot in as 3-4 on a lot of teams rotation, which is significant down the stretch in a close race. Not going to get a ton, but enough to make it worth it to move him.

Evan Grant update on Beltre: https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/texas-rangers/rangers/2018/06/30/trade-no-trade-summer-adrian-beltre-wants-play-texas-rangers-2019

Short version is if Beltre plays in 2019, he wants to be with the Rangers. A trade is still possible this season, but with other 3B's on the market as well, we not as likely as you might think.

saw the update and was going to post something on that as well. Here is an article with a little more info on them:

https://www.lonestarball.com/2018/7/2/17525198/texas-rangers-international-free-agents-j-2-signing-period

The 2018-19 J-2 signing period, where major league teams can officially sign sixteen year old international free agents who are now eligible to sign, kicks off today, and as expected, July 2, 2018, finds the Texas Rangers with agreements in place with several amateurs.
Per Ben Badler and the Baseball America international signing tracker, the Rangers have deals in place currently with three free agents: Venezuelan catcher Jose Rodriguez, Venezuelan shortstop Luisangel Acuna, and Dominican Republic shortstop Junior Paniagua. Rodriguez is the #36 prospect on the Baseball America international free agent rankings list, and #21 on the MLB Pipeline list. Acuna is the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star prospect Ronald Acuna.
Per MLB Pipeline, Rodriguez got a $2 million bonus from the Rangers, while Acuna got a $425,000. Those two signings account for roughly half of the Rangers' $4,983,500 bonus pool, though they can also trade for up to another 75% of that pool allotment number.
More prospects will, no doubt, be added by the Rangers in the next few days. In addition, the top international free agent, Cuban Victor Mesa (who goes by Victor Victor), is not yet eligible to sign, and its possible the Rangers may be holding back a certain amount of their international bonus pool money to possibly make a run at him, once he is cleared.
UPDATE Added to the signing list from BA is Leandro Gonzalez, outfielder from Venezuela.

Not sure how much we'd even get for Beltre at this point but even if it was just a lottery ticket prospect and some int'l signing pool money, as long as he comes back to finish his career as a Ranger I'll be damn happy.

Maybe it's just the new normal when it comes to draft pick compensation change making trade deadline deals less "mega", but it sure does seem like we are snakebit every time we have a bad season and guys we need to move... Either their performance drops their trade value or the market just isn't there (Darvish).

Both. Hamels didn't exactly help the cause out yesterday either.

Predicting destinations for 10 top trade targets

Quote:

3. Cole Hamels, Rangers: Having altered his pitch mix a bit from last season, the veteran still appears to have plenty left in his tank. Hamels has relied less on his four-seam fastball this year, throwing his cutter more often (27.6 percent of the time in 2018; 18.9 percent in '17) with success. He has also continued to fare well with his curveball (.114 BAA) and changeup (.209 BAA). While no traded arm will likely perform as well as Justin Verlander did following his move to Houston last August, Hamels' playoff pedigree gives him an edge over the other hurlers likely to be dealt this summer. The veteran has been a proven winner under the brightest lights, compiling a 3.48 in 16 career postseason starts.

Prediction: Hamels joins the Yankees for a package of infielder Brandon Drury plus right-hander Chance Adams (New York's No. 4 prospect) or Justus Sheffield (MLB.com's No. 41 prospect).

Would be thrilled to get a top 50 prospect for Hamels, especially a pitcher at AAA. I don't follow them, so don't really know much about the prospects listed.

From today's Scott Lucas minor league update email... going to need to find a spot of Calhoun sometime soon, even with the power outage:

Quote:

Willie Calhoun is batting .343/.366/.500 over the last 30 days. In 112 trips to the plate, he's drawn only four walks, and he's fanned only eight times. I need to dig into the numbers to find where the power went. Calhoun should surpass last year's 27 doubles soon, but he's going deep less than one-third as often as last year.

What an amazing career he's had. If he does play next year, he'll likely finish north of 3,200 hits and just shy of 500 hr. Gonna miss this guy.

yeah, he's an ill fit given the other ill-fitting parts they have, and something just seems off about the relationship with the organization so far. i wouldn't be surprised if he's used to beef up the return they get on a trade of one of the vets.

Makes me want to puke that they were only able to flip Yu Darvish for a one-tool guy that I could see basically just being a throw-in. What a **** trade market last year

Yea, would have been funny to see Daniels just keep Darvish, but then he would have been crucified. Just bad timing to be sellers with all the factors involved, including the additional WC spot.

Technically true. But one is getting lit up at A ball at Hickory and the other is basically a utility guy bouncing around the infield at A+ while also doing little at the plate.

Adams had been dominate since being converted from a RP the last two years in the minors. This year has been a different story as he had a chance at the roster out of spring then has been terrible all year in AAA. He has struggled to keep his era below 5.00 (4.97 at the moment.) Sheffield has the prospect pedigree and was great at AA this year but took his lumps after being promoted to AAA. He has since settled down and has a sub 3.00 ERA now in both AAA and on the season combined. He is definitely the better "prize" and also a lefty.

Beltre plays 2019. He signs a 1year deal and announces he'll retire at the end of the season.

You've gotta have a Farewell Tour.
