Any word on Kela? Assume he'll be available Friday?

Last I heard, he would be.

Yu and Kela are just what this pitching staff needs.

And, didn't have to trade any prospects for them.

A least Friday is a day game - yard work in the AM, baseball in the PM, out for Mexican in the evening.

Just saw on twitter that the Red Sox have traded for Pomeranz. I don't think anything has been formally confirmed yet, but it appears that is where he is headed.

Reports are that it was a Pomeranz for Anderson Espinoza swap.

If that's the case, we really don't have any comparables when it comes to pitching prospects, but if you're looking at overall prospects you'd be looking at a Joey Gallo.

I would have liked Pomeranz, but I can live with not trying to beat that deal.

So much for the frat boy buddies. Maybe Jon hazed AJ back in the day.

I'm not saying just go trade for a pitcher to trade for a pitcher, but I do hope we get some pitching help closer to now than the deadline. Yu and Kela help, but idk how long the lead will last trotting out Lohse, Martinez, Gonzalez, Griffin or whatever option we have for the other 2 open spots. A Lucroy or Bud Norris would be nice also.

I definitely agree we need another arm. My feelings were at the start of the season with the roster we had if Yu came back and pitched at 80% effectiveness, we'd win the division. If not, we'd be competing for the wildcard.

At the break, I still feel that way. If Yu comes back and gives us 10+ starts at at least 80% of his normal effectiveness, we win this division.

If not, we'd better make a trade for an arm.

Lucroy doesn't do much for me. I'd love to have him, but not at the price he is going to command. Our offense is fine and only has the potential to get better. An additional slugger isn't going to matter if Nick or ChiChi put us down 5 runs every other start.

Aside from Sonny Gray and Fernandez (who isn't really available), there's not any other arms under long-term team control that really wow me... So the thought process of finding a guy via trade that can slot in at #2 if/when Darvish walks after '17 likely isn't going to happen this trade deadline.

So I'd fall back on my Matt Moore choice and see what Tampa wants from him. He gives you a good chance to win every outing, and rounds out your rotation with:

Hamels / Darvish / Moore / Perez / Griffin

Not exactly dominant, but good enough to win the division.

You hope your #1 Hamels / #2 Darvish stay healthy and that's as good a playoff punch as most teams have, then you see out of Moore/Perez/Griffin/Colby/Holland who looks primed to take the ball in the #3/#4 slots and who gets moved to the bullpen.

It's not a World Series rotation on paper, but it's certainly capable of winning in the playoffs.

IMO the rotation as is (assuming Yu stays healthy) is good enough to win the division but if we want to make a serious run at the World Series we'd better add another arm. Also agree on Lucroy, if we want to add some pop to the lineup we need to trade/DFA Mitch and bring up Gallo.

I just don't think there is an obtainable arm out there that you know will put you in a position to win in the playoffs. Your #3 guy is going to probably be a guy that could give you a gem, could **** the bed.

Just saw someone post that Pomeranz ranks 3rd in the AL in pitches per plate appearance. As in 3rd most. The last thing we need is another guy who nibbles.

By that definition, we already have a #3 in Perez. Are we convinced that Moore is any better than Martin?

Idk what to think if our best option is a 36 y/o journeyman. Maybe he's the best option bc they don't want much for him given his age.

Perez in big games:

09/26/2012: 0.2IP / 5ER
10/01/2012: 4.0IP / 4ER
09/30/2013: 5.1IP / 3ER
10/02/2015: 7.0IP / 1ER
10/11/2015: 5.0IP / 4ER

He's pitched one "gem", and it was a game he gave up a run in the first inning and we lost 2-1.

Don't get me wrong, Matt Moore isn't a guy you hand the ball in a must-win either, but I have more faith in him than I do Perez.

I don't personally see Moore as enough of an improvement to go give up much for.

Some comments.

I'm not surprised we didn't get Pomeranz. As I mentioned, innings concerns and I think he helps get you to the playoffs, but doesn't help you in the playoffs.

I do think we have Ss that would equate to Anderson, if you look at the numbers.

Anderson (3/9/98): 18, A (SAL), 17 GS, 4.38 ERA, 1.368 WHIP

Luis Ortiz (7/22/95): 20, AA-A+, 13 GS, 3.44, 1.24 WHIP
Last year, this is what Ortiz did in the same league:
Luis Ortiz: 19, A (SAL), 13 GS, 2.16, 1.080 WHIP

Ariel Jurado (1/30/96): 20, A+, 15 GS, 3.82, 1.288 WHIP
Last year he pitched in the SAL, as well:
Jurado: 19, A, 15 GS, 3.27 ERA, 1.051 WHIP

Yohander Mendez (1/17/95): 21, AAA-AA-A+, 15 GS, 2.72, 1.128 WHIP
He pitched in SAL at 19 and 20:
19: 6 GS, 2.61 ERA, 0.903 WHIP, 31.0 IP
20: 8 GS, 2.71 ERA, 1.085 WHIP, 66.1 IP

You'd be hard pressed to distinguish between the 3, IMO. I don't know if any of those 3 are worth Pomeranz, but we aren't in a position to panic.

In 2011, Matt Moore and Martin Perez were the #1 and #2 LHP prospects.

In 2012, Martin Perez was 21 and in 2015, he was just coming back from TJ surgery. I don't know if he can be fantastic, when it counts.

I wouldn't mind adding Matt Moore.

Odorizzi has struggled in recent GS.

This article on MLBTR puts all the SP options on the table. Casting a wide net, there are 40 SPs mentioned.

I'm not interested in Rich Hill. I don't want to send anything to the A's, unless it is for Gray.

CC Sabatthia?!
Nick Tepesch? Really?!

We need someone.

Interesting pitchers mentioned by MLBTR going tomorrow:
Archer (TB): 4.66 ERA
De La Rosa (Col): 5.74 ERA
Santana (Minn): 4.06 ERA
Corbin (DBacks): 4.94 ERA
Cashner (SD): 5.40 ERA

I'd almost be interested to see Yohander Mendez.

We've got Perez (L), Darvish (R), Hamels (L), and Griffin (R) in that order, I suppose. Lohse (R) appears the only one on the 25, right now for the 5th GS. We get a day off, so we could skip the 5th spot the 2nd time around, but that is dangerous with all the injuries. I think JD might have hoped he could wrap up a SP for the 5th spot. Once SPs start pitching again, it becomes a wait, even if we acquire one.

One other option on the 40.

Connor Sadzeck (RHP-24): AA: 16 GS, 3.09 ERA, 1.13 WHIP. He was 11th Round pick by Rangers in 2011.

MLB Scouting:

quote:
Scouting grades: Fastball: 80 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45

Signed for $350,000 as an 11th-rounder out of Howard (Texas) JC in 2011, Sadzeck led the low Class A South Atlantic League with a 2.25 ERA when he made his full-season debut two years later. He blew out his elbow and missed 2014 following Tommy John surgery, then returned last year to claim a spot on the 40-man roster with his live arm.

Sadzeck throws harder than any pitcher in the Rangers' system, with his lively fastball sitting at 97-99 mph and repeatedly climbing into triple digits when he worked as a reliever in the Arizona Fall League during the offseason. His mid-80s slider also can be a weapon with bite when he stays on top of it. Sadzeck's changeup isn't nearly as effective because he throws it too hard and doesn't command it well.

Sadzeck has trouble repeating his mechanics, as his release point wanders and he doesn't always take a direct line to the plate. He has little track record of throwing strikes, so it's much easier to project him as a fireballing reliever. If Sadzeck shifts to the bullpen, he could ascend to Texas in a hurry.

Thoughts on trading for Julio Teheran of the Braves? Under contract through 2020

Braves GM says he's not going anywhere. But that could obviously change.

It would cost quite a bit. He's a stud who has performed like an ace and is just entering his prime. And he (relatively) cheap and controllable till '20.
