regardless of who's at fault, I'm glad the escobar/Gomes incident occurred. Boston had been playing like a bunch of zombies for the previous couple weeks. That altercation seemed to wake them up at least.

I'm far from a Red Sox fan, but I'll root for them against the Rays this year due to Price not getting some sort of punishment. I don't understand how he escapes with nothing. MLB scared to suspend him for some reason? If you want to throw at people fine, but you should be punished just like any other player.

Ortiz sure complains a lot. He does sound like my middle schoolers. Everything that doesn't go his way is an injustice, and is evidence of some personal agenda against him and his people. And it's all wrapped up in this intangible, relative concept of "respect." The more he demands it, the less inclined I am to give it.

Don't tell him I said that, though. I wouldn't want to see ten columns by ESPN, NESN, Bleacher Report, etc where he rants about being disrespected by a 34 year old schoolteacher.

For starters, I'm sure I'd get to first base from home plate faster than he could. I'm not sure how to judge that, since I'm here, and we've never actually seen him run from home to first.

And given that I can actually move, that's an immediate advantage in playing defense at a position other than 1B.

How do I prove I'm as fast as (or faster than) David Ortiz? There's a Deadspin article about Billy Hamilton, in which a comparison is made to other MLB players. Prince Fielder is noted as going from home to first in 4.99 seconds. I suggest that if I can make it from home to first in under 5 seconds, that puts me on par with Ortiz. If someone comes up with a verifiable time for him, I'll match or beat that time instead.

As far as being a comparable defender, or having a comparable arm (which I don't think I necessarily do, but I'm willing to compete) I'm open to ideas.

See, this isn't a bet I'd want you to lose or have to live up to.

I still don't think that you'd be able to beat Papi in more than one category. I think that running, you might have him beaten, but just because he's large, doesn't mean he isn't fast or quick.

Just because he doesn't play defense often (or as well as an everyday starter) doesn't mean he wouldn't be the best defensive 1st baseman in virtually any softball league in America. Because I am certain he would be.

The thing that struck me about Ortiz's plaintive cry for respect was the notion that he thought he deserved it for being better than other players. After all, I don't see whole lot of minor leaguers flying off the handle after a couple of HBPs. If that's the case, then I could measure the amount of respect I need to give him on the basis of our comparative skill sets.

I thought it was a pretty simple wager. Am I faster (and quicker) than David Ortiz? Am I a better fielder? I'm willing to put something on the line to prove that I am.

And when I win, OriolePete has to post his wife's picture.
