The real attention getter to me was how these otherwise freakishly tall men were overwhelmed/intimidated by his length. We're talking 6'10" guys who all of a sudden feel short for the first time. Eventually people will either drive into his body more or give it up more quickly to try to mitigate that somewhat, but until people get used to playing against him it's going to be a novelty even for NBA players.

Agreed re the fouls. It will be interesting to see how they call things with him early on, whether he gets the star treatment from the jump, but typically skinny guys like him are going to get some calls on contact that big hulking guys won't.
Ryen Russillo was saying that what will be interesting is that with Wemby's standing reach being about 10', he doesn't even need to really get clearly open like someone like Bryn Forbes. The guys guarding him on the perimeter will be closer to 6'6-6'8 so Wemby will have a clean look without separation on the perimeter.

He also has a habit of drawing a lot of fouls on jumpers for the same reason. Guys are so much shorter that they have to jump into his space to try and contest.

I think Pop needs a 2 year deal max. I can't imagine a 79 year old trying to coach a NBA team. He is going to die on the Rodeo Road Trip most likely.

Pop obviously takes great care of himself but signing the 5-year deal is probably more about preventing the media from asking him about his future every press conference more than anything. He very well might move into a full front office position after 2 or 3 seasons. That is the most likely scenario but this keeps it from being a distraction every off-season.

Man. I would love to get Bud back on the bench to get our defense in gear.

I think it was Windhorsts podcast where I heard the language of the contract includes him as President of Basketball Operations, so technically, he could only coach 1 or 2 more years then just be PoBO for the remainder of the contract.

Another Cissoko dime that turns into an easy assist if that's Barlow.

Vegas summer league game 3 thoughts:

-good win bounce back game for the summer Spurs. I also forgot that Quentin Jackson played for Washington. First game I've watched him play since the NIT final.
-Branham started slow and I was worried that the 1-17 shooting from the last game was going to carry over. Then toward the end of the second quarter he started to get it going and turned it into a 29 point performance. He was also much better with the ball in his hands and was the go to down the stretch in the 4th when we put the game away.
-Barlow kept us in the game early while Branham struggled and had a very solid game. 20 points and 7 rebounds. He's got a really nice touch from the midrange and I think there's some hope he can one day extend that out to 3. He has a qualifying offer for another two way contract that he hasn't signed yet. I can't imagine we wouldn't match if another team offered him a full contract, but he's improved so much since last season and does a lot of things really well.
-Champagnie was very solid tonight and did a little bit of everything, finishing with 18, 8, and 7. He was only 2-8 from 3, but his shot selection was good and he didn't force anything. Defensively he was ok but was too handsy trying to cut off drives and picked up 5 fouls. He has a really mature game and I love watching him play.
-Wesley was very meh tonight. 14 points on 5-16 shooting, 5 boards, 4 assists, 4 turnovers. There are times that it feels like he has his mind made up to shoot, because he will do a great job of collapsing the defense but will force it at the rim instead of kicking it out. Just lacks that next level of feel right now.
-Cissoko has some Boris Diaw to him. I posted a couple clips earlier in this thread, but man he has really good feel for passing. He needs to tighten up his handles through traffic, but I really liked what I saw from him leading the break. When he can catch and shoot, his form looks smooth and like he has the potential to be an average shooter with some work. He's got no idea how to finish at the rim when there's defenders around right now. Very right handed and throws up some awkward looking shots. He rebounded better tonight (7 boards) and did a much better job of not fouling on defense with only 2 fouls tonight.
-no one else on the team is really worth talking about. They're all far away from being NBA caliber players.

Thanks for the breakdown. I didn't stay up to watch that one last night.

Great comparison.

Barlow = 20yo David West. Remember West played all 4 years at Xavier and wasn't a rotation player until he was 25 in his 3rd season.

Sidy Cissoko has Kawhi Leonard's defense with Manu Ginobili's flair for passing.

And with the shooting touch of Spice Adams.

Barring major injuries, I think we can make a push for 40 wins. I know that's a big jump, but there were game last year that we definitely could have won but would pull starters and run out weird lineups. I think if last years team had tried to win every game, they could have broken that 30 win threshold.

Yes, they both sat out but Sir Jabari Rice played for the first time and looked pretty good at times.

Like LawHall said, Sidy had a few more nice assists and a nasty dunk.

Other than that, not much to speak of.

Any thoughts on the report that SSE and the Missions are wanting to collaborate on a downtown entertainment district with a new playground for both?

It's something they need to do. But they have 9 more years left on their current so it's not going to happen any time soon.
