Exactly. Kawhi has two NBA titles and two NBA Finals MVPs now on TWO different teams, including the second title bringing the first ever NBA title for the entire country of Canada.cityagboy said:
I agree with everything you said about Toronto, but he has already written his own legacy with his two chips and two finals MVPs. Anything now is icing on the cake. He will go down as one of the greats!
Him going to the Lakers (if he does) is different than LeBron and KD chasing their first chip.
Well, yeah sure. But that still looks like it would be deliberately choosing the path that has the lower probability of success. Few people manage their work careers or businesses by always trying to do things 'the hardest way', and the super star NBA players of course don't usually operate that way - they instead seem to typically be scheming ways to bunch up together.Guitarsoup said:
So it would be more impressive to turn around the constantly hapless Clippers into a title winner than join two of the best players in the NBA on the big Laker Machine, wouldn't it?
I don't think you can win a championship and not have it improve your legacy at all. If he wins four straight with LA and is the Finals MVP for 3 different teams, that says something.Guitarsoup said:
Kawhi already turned down 5y220mm last year from a franchise that has kind of proven themselves one of the best run in any sport ever.
If he joins the Lakers and succeeds, I don't think it significantly helps his legacy. If he joins the clippers and succeeds, I do think it significantly helps his legacy. If he brought the clippers a championship, and has another 5-6 years of prime play like this year, I think he is in the conversation for top 3 all time. If he goes to the Lakers and they win two before Bron breaks down, I don't think Kawhi's legacy standing improved at all. If he stays with Toronto and they keep winning the East, I think his legacy goes up more than of he wins with AD+LBJ. Does he even care about that? Who knows.

But Kawhi does not strike me as someone who cares about that at all. He just balls.
He was the clear #1 guy on a balanced Toronto team. Mission Accomplished. Can check that as 'Done' on this 'Legacy' resume.Guitarsoup said:Saint Pablo said:I don't think you can win a championship and not have it improve your legacy at all. I think the chance that the Lakers win the next four are next to none.
Bron is an absolute freak of nature, but he also has 1500 NBA games played. That body won't hold out forever and that team has literally no depth
But being the 3rd option on a superteam probably doesn't help your legacy as much as being the clear #1 guy on a balanced team that wins. Look at Bosh's numbers after he joined the heat. Joining brons team probably won't get him into the conversation for top 5 or top 3. Winning with the clippers or raptors a time or two more gets him there in my opinion
I definitely don't think he would be the third option, but who knows. I also don't see LeBron deferring to anyone else ever.Guitarsoup said:Saint Pablo said:I don't think you can win a championship and not have it improve your legacy at all. Want to compete for GOAT, probably gotta be the man on more than two title teams, especially since the first one he was a 12/6 player at the time and you had three HOFers playing with him.Pumpkinhead said:He was the clear #1 guy on a balanced Toronto team. Now, if he just likes the idea of living in Los Angeles and he wants to maximize his probability of winning more NBA titles...he doesn't choose the Clippers over pairing with (in particular) an Anthony Davis for the next 4-5 years. Going to the Clips is not the smart basketball move.
Lol I listened to the same pod this morning. He may be saying that, but I do not see him doing that.Pumpkinhead said:
Bill Simmons/Ryen Russillo over in L.A. said the scuttlebutt there was that LeBron has been telling Kawhi he just wants to hang around until 2023 to play with his son, and that he is ready to start moving into a new basketball role and that the Lakers will be Kawhi's team. They seemed skeptical that LeBron is actually ready to do that, but apparently that has been his recruiting pitch to Kawhi.

So much basketball legacy math and fact cherrypicking going on with this Kawhi argument that I'm having a hard time keeping track of everything.

One of us pulled 12/6 out of their hat on Kawhi's first Finals MVP... that's outed you as being unwilling to debate Kawhi in an intellectually honest way... it was a total cherrypick.

Kawhi is never going to be considered the goat. It can't happen, not statistically, not in reality.
Bookmark it if you want, it's never ever ever going to happen.

It's absolutely true, isn't it. He didn't even score in double digits in 40% of the Finals games that year, did he? He didn't make the all star team that year or the year after.
And Ray Allen only hit the shot in game six the year before because Kawhi just lazily watched the previous shot go off the rim and then watched Bosh crash in right in front of him to feed Allen in the corner, meanwhile Kawhi did nothing that entire play but watch it happen.
Kawhi wasn't remotely the same player in 13 and 14 as what he developed into in 16, 18, and 19.
But again, your contributions on this thread are in part with the contributions in the past on this board. Thank you for them.
