Cool story about Danny Green finally making the Spurs.

Bit tangential here, but that BBallBreakdown article had a link to an Instagram photo that Green posted with this text:

greenranger14Who would've thought this guy would ever make it? Not only do I get my old job back, but they gave me a raise! to play for/with the greatest teammates and coaches, you'll ever see around the game, in the greatest organization in the world! Thank you for this great opportunity and thanks to the fans for always supporting #Spurs

And this was the top comment:

drews__worldU deserve everything, at first coming out of college I thought u was wak and even before the whole spurs things I thought u sucks but your jump shot now was smooth, maybe one of the best, u gotta shot more tho but your pretty good man

Talk about some backhanded compliments.

I mean barely. It's just funny how the internet removes people's inhibitions. That guy had no problem basically telling Green "Yea I thought you sucked for a long time, but you've actually gotten good. Way to go!"

Looks like Spurs signed Jimmer Fredette to a partially guaranteed Training Camp deal. Wouldn't read too much into it except the fact that they are going to give him a shot to make the roster and in the case he doesn't, he still gets some $ for trying out. Not sure exactly where he fits but the Spurs could elect to keep him if he plays well enough.

If I remember his college days correctly, he will be spotting up from location E

He definitely fits the "guy you just keep on the bench and throw out there every so often to drain a few quick 3's" role. Damn I would hate defending the Spurs, they do a better job of putting players in a position to be successful than any basketball team pretty much ever.

I really like this pickup and think he could be another Pop special. He will get more open shots here than in his entire career

Jimmer is Gary Neal with better ball handling. Great shooter for some instant offense, terribad defender, should be good to eat up Ginobili minutes during the regular season (assuming he makes the team).

Gary Neal could get his own shot and create. I haven't seen that from Jimmer at the NBA level. He can come in as a spot-up shooter but I don't see much use for him when we already have a larger version of that in the red mamba who can also play some defense.
Sher Thing

Yeah exactly. He's pretty slow and hasn't shown much ability to effectively create for himself or others. He's still relatively young though and never really been in a favorable environment so I'm sure he's motivated. He's definitely worth a look in a training camp setting but I'm not convinced he sticks. It appears the Spurs want another shooter though. Simmons and Anderson both looked pretty great at times in SL but neither of them is considered a knockdown shooter from deep. Simmons could surprise some people (shot over 40% from 3 in D-League last year) but well see.

Gary Neal could create sometimes but he also could try to force it and cause a turnover almost as often. When he was on the floor or if Jimmer is out there they have one role, drain 3's or open shots and guard the worst offensive player on the other team while playing within the scheme. You don't need nor do you want those guys to try to do more than that because it will end up just taking the ball away from your other players that are just better at doing everything else.

In the Spurs' offense you need multiple sharpshooters that you can just throw out there because spacing is so important to the offense and inevitably all shooters are hot or cold. Forcing the other team to respect that 3 in the corner frees up the space for guys like Tony, Kawhi, and Manu to drive and for all the bigs to get 1 on 1 matchups inside of 15 feet. It's all about creating 1 on 1's with a spread out floor so the other team has to play perfect defense to defend it.

No denying that Jimmer can shoot. It's his 6'1 - 6'2 frame and completely awful defensive statistics that make him a tough fit. If the Spurs simply want another sharp shooter there are other options (Jarrell Eddie, Dorrell Wright, etc) who are far from good defenders but at least have the size (6'7 - 6'9) to disrupt, rebound, etc.

But who knows. Like I said, he's never really been in an environment where he could thrive so he could turn it around. I like the guy so I hope he does.

Eddie is completely unproven and has no offensive game other than a stationary shot. Fredette has a much more well-rounded offensive game. Regardless, both will have the chance to prove their worth in camp.

Fredette is a poor defender, but when he's played on more functional teams he's only been poor instead of abysmal. He wouldn't be the first poor defender the Spurs have been able to hide.

If Fredette sticks, he's a 14th or 15th player on the roster. All of those guys have glaring holes, and at least Fredette has offensive upside (look at some of per minute averages) and is a good work ethic and intangible guy.

There is also the lingering question of Mills' injury situation, which would make him an important insurance policy.

I think it's a really good pickup for a non-guaranteed 15th spot on the roster. He has the potential to help a lot more than most guys in that slot.

I also like the fact that we are buying low. The kid is a proven NBA shooter but coming off a season where he shot horribly from three, which makes him a good value pick-up.

I'm not going to just start dogging on Jimmer throughout the threar because like I said, I do like the guy.

But the fact is his game did not translate to the NBA out of college and his struggles are well documented since joining the NBA. He has a very limited offensive game even if you make it seem like he doesn't and even in college he was regulated to shooting deep threes because it was the only way he could get off his shot. I truly hope he has improved his game because he's been a supreme bust so far as a 10th overall pick. His defensive numbers are just abysmal if you look at the advanced metrics as well. And then on top of that he's only 6'2 (maybe) in shoes which does him no favors at all. I have already been cutting him some slack regarding the environments he's had to play in but at some point he should have shown some sort of life.

So while I like the guy, I would still put the odds of him making the squad pretty low. You make a good point regarding Patty's injury but I don't think it's that serious. Just more of a precautionary thing the Spurs are wanting. If the Spurs feel this could be a potential issue then this signing makes more sense though.

All in all though whoever the Spurs fill the roster out with (if they even sign a 15th player) will have to be good with showing up to games in a suit regularly.
