Agree with soup. Aldridge is a far off 2nd, and that's why I think Spurs are trying so hard to keep Green. If you can get a 3 man core of Green, Leonard, and Aldridge, you're a good young PG away from total domination.

I think a big issue with losing Green is what do you replace him with? At that point (if he's renounced or signs elsewhere) you're cap constrained on a replacement.

That's kind of the point. We can't replace him. If Timmy and Manu work with us, we STILL need Green to think about what a good thing he has here, and be willing to help the good guys out.

I think by now he realizes what an amazing defensive tandem he and Leonard make. I think if LMA is in, Danny knows his job is to play lockdown D and break 3 point records.

The biggest issue, really, is if Danny can't turn down a bigger payday elsewhere, which I'm sure he is going to get. We can't offer him what he wants this year, but he is young enough to take a short deal, and then stack all that paper just a few short years down the road, where he and Kawhi are going to be the heart, soul, brain, and balls of this team.

If the Spurs unload Patty and Splitter they should be able to offer Danny a nice contract starting around $10M-11M annually. Not sure what he will get elsewhere at the moment.

Spurs and Kawhi not wasting any time.

Sources: Kawhi Leonard agrees to framework of contract to remain with Spurs

RC Buford, Coach Pop, Tim, Tony and Kawhi will all meet with Aldridge tomorrow morning in LA.

Most on here are way over hyping Patty and Splitter and even Green to a lesser extent. They are great role players and had a great run here but adding LMA or Gasol is the best chance to getting Duncan one more title and you have to take that gamble even if it means a few of them leaving.

You absolutely mortgage a bit of the future if neccesary to win now. Duncan has one or two years tops. I love the role players but if you think getting the old band back together beats all of GSW, OKC, Clips, Rocks and CLE then you are probably a homer.

You've got it backwards.

LMA is the future, not the win now guy.

If you think a healthy Spurs couldnt have handled the playoffs, and then destroy LeBrons one man band in the finals, you're just trying to stir **** up. The west was weak come playoff time.

This Spurs team, as is, is good enough to win one more ring. It's always a matter of staying healthy, which didn't happen for us last season.

LMA would take too long to learn the system and carve himself out a spot.

I don't really want him that much.

This team does not make it to the finals without perimeter defense. Green is key imo

I'm not a Spurs fan, so forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but when I watch Atlanta and SA, it seems pretty apparent that their style thrives on speed at the PG position. If Parker can't press the tempo like he used to, I think that's a pretty big blow and a nod in the favor of keeping Mills.
aggie_2001_2005

Speed there is ideal in the Spurs current system but Pop has shown over the years an excellent ability to adapt to his roster. Leonard and Aldridge on a pic and roll is pretty deadly.

Don't get me wrong, the Spurs with Aldridge will be a better team.

I'm saying they won't be winning anything for at least two years, if not more. Duncan doesn't have that kind of time.

The Spurs run a system. This isn't a drop it into Aldridge in the post and see what happens. There will always be a time and place for that, but it's not an offense that wins championships, and it never will be.

You just described the offense the Spurs ran for 3 championships. Dump it to Timmy and then pass out of the double or swing it around the horn. That and the pick and pop with Tim were virtually the only plays the Spurs ran outside set pieces.

And Duncan Aldridge Leonard Green Parker is a win now starting lineup. If they can keep Bobo and add a decent backup 1/2/3 they'll be in good shape.

Exactly. The Gasol/LMA addition would give the Spurs another window immediately. Yes the Spurs were banged up, but some of the struggles were more than that. GSW was a great squad last year. I dont see how you can automatically assume a healthy Spurs team beats them.

The west should be just as tough next year if not more tough. Bringing the old band back for one more year likely means the old guys are just a bit older and slower.

If you bring in LMA or Gasol then you automatically are back in the picture for next year. That gives the Spurs much higher odds than hoping parker regains form, Mills and Diaw play like they did in 2014 and Splitter finally stays healthy.

Getting LMA or Gasol means the Spurs can only keep two of

  • Green
  • Diaw
  • Splitter
  • Mills

Most believe that Splitter/Mills are gone to make room.

Understood. I would pick Green and Diaw but trust the Spurs to pick the right two.

I think all those guys are more replaceable than most Spurs fans realize, especially once you add LMAs offense.

Splitter- with Parker losing a step, Splitter will become a total liability on offense and clog the paint even more. There's no room for splitter when a guy like Kawhi is running the offense. Or Aldridge running it for that matter. Finally, Splitter will eventually get destroyed against a team like Golden state when they play small ball and he plays too small on offense to take advantage of them on that end. He is totally expendable via trade whether they land Aldridge or not, in my mind. He's also too injured to count on regardless.

Green--mostly needed for his defense. You won't replace it anytime soon. His shooting could be easily replaced despite what most homers would think. The Spurs have built a dynasty on making ordinary shooters good and good shooters great shooters in their system. But for his D, he's not expendable.

Mills--Gary Neal. Roger Mason. Speedy Claxton, Stephen Jackson. All guys who got it done for the Spurs at guard when they needed a bench spark and did next to nothing everywhere else. His game is totally replaceable if the Spurs find a guy they can work with. He can only play one position as well on defense, so he's not all that valuable in the grand scheme until Parker is out. But if your offense changes to a ball movement out of the post oriented system, your PG becomes less important. Think Avery Johnson and a young TP.

Diaw--he can own people on the block, defend multiple positions, and he's a great passer with some shooting range. Hold onto him at all costs IMO especially if you get Aldridge.

Danny Green agrees to 4 year / 45M contract to stay in San Antonio.

Thank you Danny. Could have easily gotten more on the market.

Spurs now go into LMA meeting with Leonard and Green in back pocket.

I always liked Splitter. I'm sad to see him go, but he's going to play for Coach Bud, so not as bad.

If we have a starting five of Tony, Danny, Kawhi, Aldridge, Duncan, thata going to be close to a 60 win team minus any significant injuries.

Patty, Manu, Diaw, Baynes off the bench is good enough to beat the bottom feeders.

I'm starting to feel more confident about the Aldridge deal if we really do get to keep Danny.

Yep. Splitter traded to Atlanta. Atlanta absorbing his contract. Not sure if anything comes to Spurs in return.

Spurs now have projected cap space for Aldridge. Meeting starts as we speak.

Wow, great moves thus far. Pretty clear the Spurs felt the need to upgrade and shake things up to try to get Timmy one more. It will be interesting where they go for interior help if LMA and Gasol stay put.

DeMarre Carroll just signed for 15M/yr & Middleton 14M/yr.

Green definitely took a pay cut. Danny left at least 15M on the table by re-signing with the Spurs. That's why we love these guys.
