#9 will be retired no doubt about it.

My problem with Tony is Tony. He has always seemed to be more about him than the SPURS.

He should be a SPUR 24-7. When he insist on playing during the summer, EuroBall, Olympics, etc. it does not help him or the SPURS.

Just look at the past playoff run for proof.
Why? Because he likes to talk to reporters more than Timmy and Pop? Just because Tony's personality is different than the quiet, just do the work stars we've had doesn't mean he's all about Tony.

And in terms of Euro Ball, the Olympics, etc., you know Manu did the exact same thing and it hampered us when it came to championship runs (or lack thereof)? You have to realize that these guys come from countries where they are the Lebron James' of that country. They have a lot of people who count on them and want them to play in international competitions. It's not like here where you have 10-20 huge stars to pick from for the Olympics.

This. It's a huge responsibility.

If you're going to be a fan of a team that boasts as many international players as our Spurs, you have to be sensitive to that as a fan. Comes with the territory.

I hate the argument that because a player is employed by a team that they should be indentured to that team 24/7/365. No other job does that, outside of the military.

A couple of weeks ago, a buddy of mine took his very precocious, very much not shy 9 year old son to the Bracken Rifle Range. It was early on a weekday and empty, except for Tim Duncan and his friend shooting Tim's AR. Kid walks right up to Tim and says, "Hey, I know you! You're the guy from the HEB commercials!" Tim's friend was dying laughing. My buddy wanted to hide. Tim just took it all in stride, "yup, that's me!" The kid then admitted he knew he was Tim Duncan from the Spurs. It made Tim's friend laugh even harder. Tim just laughed and they talked about sports and the kid's baseball team, and he wound up letting the kid shoot his rifle. My buddy said he's always heard it, but that it was really cool to see Tim's just a dude and nowhere near the diva that some players are.

You aren't going to do better than Bonner for a 6th big. He knows the system, can hit threes (at least in the regular season, which is the only time you need a 6th big) and, despite his limitations, is a decent defender.

I'm glad to have him back and think he'll eat up some good minutes in the regular season when we're looking to rest some of the others. Good lockerroom guy which is also something you look for in a 6th big.

I think the true 1/2 lineups will be
Parker/Mills
Green/Manu
Kawhi/Simmons
Aldridge/Diaw
Duncan/West

Mills is the titular PG, but I think Manu will still mostly run the offense when they are both out there.

McCallum will probably get the most third string minutes, with Anderson only playing when we are resting a three, Bonner playing at the five and only when we are resting a 4/5, and Marjanovic only playing at the end of blowouts this year. I'd really like to see Marjanovic take over at the five for the second unit next year.

I just hope we get to see some lineups as interesting as the PF blowout special we were treated to at times last year (Bonner/Baynes/Ayres/Diaw/Mills).

...and yeah, I don't want Bonner in the starting lineup or anything, but he's basically the Michael Jordan of 6th bigs.

So where would our second string rank in terms of talent in each conference? I would think Mills, Manu, Diaw, West and insert whomever would be good enough to be a top 4 team in the east and make the playoffs in the west. I can't wait for this season!

Agree with Ulrich that Simmons probably gets the most backup minutes at 3. Dude looks legit.

Probably only see Anderson in blowouts.

Not only that, but Spuran Spuran returns 3/4 of its members. Hoping they bring in Boban to replace Baynes.

Matt Bonner's WS/48 with the Spurs is .143.
Kyrie Irving's WS/48 with Cleveland is .144.
Ray Allen's with Milwaukee was .145.
Jason Kidd's with the Nets was .145.
Glen Rice with the Hornets was .139.
Zach Randolph's with the Grizzlies is .148.
Vince Carter's with the Raptors was .150.

What I am trying to say is that advanced stats prove that Bonner is on the cusp of being an All-Star, if not a Hall of Famer.

Met Tim in PetSmart in 2002. Didn't really follow basketball much at that time. I said to myself, "That guy is way too tall to not be a Spur."

Asked him if he was, he replied yes. Then bent down to pet my dog, asked his name and if he did any tricks. Model of humility. He is the only reason I started watching the NBA. Will likely stop when he retires.

Just more proof that Pop is still very much enjoying coaching:

quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- Gregg Popovich will coach Team Africa while brothers Pau and Marc Gasol will play for the World Team in the NBA's first exhibition game in Africa.

Popovich, the five-time champion from the San Antonio Spurs, will guide Team Africa in the Aug. 1 game in Johannesburg, the league announced Thursday. He will be assisted on the bench by Atlanta's Mike Budenholzer, the NBA Coach of the Year and his former assistant with the Spurs, and Oklahoma City assistant Monty Williams.

Team Africa features players born in Africa or second-generation Africans. Their roster is: Captain Luol Deng (Miami), Al-Farouq Aminu (Portland), Nicolas Batum (Charlotte), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee), Bismack Biyombo (Toronto), Boris Diaw (San Antonio), Gorgui Dieng (Minnesota), Festus Ezeli(Golden State), Serge Ibaka (Oklahoma City) and Luc Mbah a Moute (Sacramento)

The World Team will be coached by Brooklyn's Lionel Hollins, with Boston's Brad Stevens as an assistant. Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers will serve as captain for the team including Pau Gasol (Chicago), Marc Gasol and Jeff Green (Memphis), Bradley Beal (Washington), Kenneth Faried (Denver), Marcus Smart and Evan Turner (Boston) and Nikola Vucevic (Orlando).

Boris Diaw playing as well for Team Africa and Pop (his father was african)

Pop's assistant will be the NBA Coach of the Year.

That tells you all you need to know about where Pop is on the list of elite coaches.
