Why do you need him if you can get another vet for depth there? Ayers is just a fringe NBA player anyway. He would be of no use if all 4 of the Spurs current bigs had the night off.

The Spurs biggest need is a 2/3 combo guy, who could play 4 in some situations. Caron Butler type.

Other than that, they have every position covered. Getting another PG would be nice, but not necessarily needed if you come up with a decent guy in Beli's old spot.

Man, I was hoping Pop could work his magic with West, but was afraid of Cleveland. This really makes me breathe a lot easier about the frontcourt. West can hit still hit the midrange shot, is a good passing big, and he can bang. He's not ideal to guard opposing 5s, but I've seen him do it and he can be effective at it for 10-15 minutes a game. He's a great complement to the Aldridge signing in that he brings the toughness that Aldridge doesn't always show.

This roster is really rounding out. Next priority is a combo guard who can shoot a little and play some point for 10 minutes a game if needed. That's the last of the true needs. A big body to bang and eat some fouls would be nice, but I think anybody we can sign of that ilk would probably be so unskilled that he would be behind Bonner (who I expect to re-sign for the vet min) in the rotation.

I'm all in on a championship run, and anything less will be a crushing disappointment. Seeing Timmy and Manu ride off into the sunset as champions would be the perfect ending to two great careers.

Please nobody get injured.

3 spots left to fill.

I would say a Veteran Guard who can bring the ball up and contribute but still be ok with spending most his time on the bench. A true Center who has the size/strength to give some decent minutes when the matchup presents itself. And most likely Bonner who is a good lockeroom guy who doesn't mind riding the pine when asked too and still plays hard when given the chance.

It's going to be awkward when Pop empties the bench next year and the guys out there are still better than the other team's starters. He might have to send Becky out there just to make it sporting.

Agreed. They should just shut down the whole league and have Golden State and San Antonio play a 81 game series to decide the champion. Let the Cavs and Rockets play an 81 game consolation series.

I'm not exactly basketball literate but why do we need so many Center/Power Forwards? Duncan, Aldridge, West, and Ayers??

Did you mean Diaw instead of Ayers?

If so, it's because the Spurs at any time would have these ridiculous combos at the 2 big spots:

Yeah, what has made the regular season fun the last few years is the infusion of young guys that we got to see develop during the regular season. That's why I'm hoping they don't fill these last few spots with aging vets. If they still like Ayers, then he's a fit. If not, some other young big will do. The guy they just drafted will be too expensive unfortunately. You figure Anderson will get a ton of minutes this year along with Patty. Then the next young combo guard is the next priority. I'm sure there will be a handful of guys in camp vying for maybe two slots.

Well it's Duncan, Aldridge, West and Diaw and at the end of the day Duncan is 39, West is 34 and Diaw is 33. Not exactly the youngest front court. Depth is vital in this area.

Playing the Rockets should be fun. Whoever is guarded by Howard can just camp out 3-4 feet behind the free-throw line and pop wide ass open jumpers all day. When he moves out to stop them, pick and roll to death.

we would love to fill other positions.

there aren't that many left that will take a vet minimum contract.

ayers isn't worth much, but at least he has been around the system for a while and is a warm body.

ray allen would be hilarious. he wouldn't have to do much. shoot threes and try not to step on himself playing defense.

Also because Aldrige was a priority at the 4, and after that we really needed a backup center to give Timmy some much-needed rest during the regular season. With Baynes getting paid, we needed some depth. Last season we had Splitter/Duncan/Baynes/Diaw so we really have the same number of big bodies that can play as we have the last couple of years.

RC and Pop turned Tiago Splitter into Lamarcus.
They then turned Baynes into David West.

I can't wait to see who they turn Cory Joseph and Marco into. This is like taking a ford focus in and leaving with a super duty in a straight up trade.

Ayars sucks. Another big is more about matchups and filling in for injuries than minutes. You need 96 big man minutes per game. The four players signed add up to almost exactly that, but Pop will rest everyone a few games plus there will be games missed due to injury. Bonner helps a little, but it would be nice to get a big young guy (capable of catching the ball) to round out the rotation.

Looking at 1-3, I see the Spurs being about 5 minutes short at 1/2 combined and 10 minutes short at the 3 with no true backup, which is why I want them to get a big combo guard who can play either spot and let Danny or Manu spin down to the 3. I'm still not counting on Anderson for anything, although Reggie Williams could probably contribute a little.

Andre Miller would be the next ideal signing. Can handle the rock, can take over scoring at times for the bench, and is the oldest player in the league with Timmy being 2nd. Perfect fit.

Only thing I really see a need for is a shooter. I really liked Marco because you could bring him in to spread the floor. Find another guy who can hit 30-40% behind the line that can be used in those guys where nobody can hit a shot.
