Honestly, no one cares if you have high level basketball experience, especially if you're just trotting it out there And expecting it to somehow prove your points.
That's always an arrogant tack to take, anyways.

Honestly I never thought we had the fire/focus to repeat (and my posts on THE SEC Rant bear that out). The 2014 squad was just in another zone mentally that few title teams ever reach.

We had the talent this year, and maybe had seeding fallen differently would have advanced further, but that's it imo.
Tough to say. If we end up the 2 seed and have a quick first round, maybe recharge the batteries a little bit with a couple of extra rest days before the next round, then maybe we start to tighten things up and get on a roll like we did last year. I do agree that the laser-like focus really wasn't there this year in general, but they could well have gone thru to the WCF, and who knows how Golden State would handle that stage? If they get past that one, then maybe a "not quite ready" Cleveland where we have the best
'Bron-stopper in the game?

So, yeah, I don't think there was quite that same "winning is the only option" mindset, but the Spurs still could have won it all regardless, and probably had as good a chance as just about any other contender.

Spurs got killed by a brutal regular season schedule. Can't remember a season with a tougher schedule through the regular season. Pair that with the injuries to our younger players made it tough for the Spurs. Sure it came down to that last game against NO, but that was a tough game and the Spurs were already expending a ton of energy throughout the second half of the regular season to even be in that position.

At the end of the day the Spurs just couldn't handle that 82 game schedule this year. It was tough. An easier schedule could have resulted in a much different season but that's just how it happened this year.

Oh I agree--I'm just saying things would have had to set up a lot more "perfectly" for the 2015 Spurs to repeat.

The 2014 Spurs were on a mission that just wasn't going to be derailed.

Neither repeating nor early elimination were foregone conclusions, but hoping for favorable circumstances is less likely to lead to another Larry than having a redemption run.

Bottom line: I thought SA had every chance to repeat, just didn't see it playing out based on the circumstances this year. Not even trying to play the "I'm was right! Look at me!" card, either. It is what it is. Lot of minute things that nickeled and dimed the Spurs from setting up for a smoother repeat run to having a rough season that ended up with us coming up a game or a couple of points short, depending on how you look at it.

We will be back next year. I'm excited for this offseason.

Wow is Gator still going on about HCA?

Look, here were our problems in order:
1a) Splitter's injury
1b) Parker's injury
2) Kawhi's disappearing act in the last 2-3 games of the series
3) Green's terrible cold streak
4) Not-quite-there chemistry due to being the 2nd unluckiest team in the NBA with regard to injuries this past season (behind OKC)
5) The accumulated fatigue of years of deep playoff runs
6) HCA

Fix 1a & 1b and we win this series in 5 games. Fix 2 or 3 and we win it in 6. As is, we went 2-2 on the road and were a bad ref call away from having the ball with 10 seconds left in a tie game (i.e. with a great shot at going 3-1 on the road). Also of note is that we went 1-2 at home, and both losses were fairly decisive (game 6 was close score-wise, but we could never get over the hump and really challenge them. They controlled it down the stretch). We had our chance at winning the series at home in game 6 and we couldn't do it.

When Parker and Splitter came out in game 1 and looked hobbled and horrible, it was obvious we weren't winning it all this year. Would it have been nice to get the Mavs? Yes, but it merely would have been prolonging the inevitable.

Michael Finley on Timmy:
He invited the whole team out for paintball once, but I had never played. I called him to ask him what we have to wear. He said long pants and a long-sleeve shirt 'so it can protect you from the paint.' But he showed up in a tank top, shorts and knee pads. When I asked him why, he said: 'Well, I'm not gonna get hit.'

I think it would have been great if they actually went fishing and sent it to TNT.

I would like to see the Spurs try to put together a package for Derrick Favors. It's another really long shot, but if you want an athletic big who can really play and do it for ten more years alongside Kawhi, this is your guy.

Not Spurs related, but the Rockets are in another dogfight with the Clippers at home with Paul sitting out. If they somehow manage to go 0-2 at home against a team starting Austin Rivers at point, after talking so much crap, I would laugh my head off.

(oh and I didn't want to say anything on their thread and get banned)

EDIT: They just gave up 41 2nd quarter points to a team starting Austin Rivers at PG. Griffin has 26 points in 18 minutes. Kind of funny. I don't think we had enough in the tank to win it all this year, but we would have steamrolled this awful team and made the WCF. Would have been pretty damn good for an off year that never quite got off the ground due to injuries. Ah well.

On another note, Blake Griffin looks like he's taking the superstar leap. I mean he's been really good for awhile, but now, with vastly improved range to go along with his explosiveness, he's an absolute terror on offense. His defense isn't great but it's solid.

Agree completely. He is well on his way into the vaunted [Simmons invented] 42 Club. 24.4/13.3/8.1. That's 45.8. Only Shaq and Jordan have been higher than 45.8.

His defense is good enough (esp since he is next to DJ.) Playing at an unreal level [until the 4th quarters.]

Golden State was the sole obstacle in SAs path had they slipped past the clippers in game 7.

From a pure matchup perspective, I was more worried about the Clippers than the Warriors. It was plain to see that the Spurs were running on fumes this post season from a health/energy standpoint, so in that regard they might not have been able to top the Warriors in the third round. I'm pretty sure that they would have beaten the Warriors if we had been able to play them in the first round.

And yeah, Griffin has made the leap. When we last played them, he was a supreme athlete but not actually a great basketball basketball player. He brought a lot of effort, but in terms of skills basically all he could do is dunk if you forgot to cover him. Now he's a very skilled, well-rounded offensive player and an acceptable defender. He was also a LOT better about keeping his mouth shut and playing the game this year. I still can't call him one of my favorite players, but he's the real deal. Very impressed with the work he has put in to hone his craft.

Nice read on Timmy. Nothing earth shattering but still worth a read:

Tim Duncan will never know how much he meant

Damn, just finished reading it.

What an article.

This right here....

quote:
" Tim Duncan is the essence of thinking outside of the box, and using different ways to attack a problem.......Accepting what you're being told is always considerably easier said than done, but here we are in year 18, with Duncan still demonstrating his dominance thanks in large part to listening and wanting to understand, to improve, to adapt. Traits that would make every parent proud.
Tim Duncan made me appreciate things no one else could have, even those close by. He indirectly helped me shape and design the person that I am today, and helped remove the burden of measuring myself through only basketball. Duncan helped me re-love the sport I had always loved but had turned on in frustration due to my disease. For that, I will always be grateful. And should we have seen Tim Duncan play for the very last time, my only hope is that he leaves the game satisfied. If anyone deserves that feeling, it's him."
The title really says it all--Tim'll never know how much he's meant to so many folks, to the city of San Antonio, and to the game of basketball itself.

And he's perfectly ok with that.

That's warrior.

That's GOAT.

One of my favorite Duncan stories is when he took Pop's self-created Wunderlic-ish test. Pop made a basketball-related test that he has given all the players that have played for him. No one ever got a perfect score - not Robinson, not Rodman, not Doc or Dominique or Moses. Duncan took it, turned it in, got a perfect score and had notes written in the margins on how Pop could make the test better.

Makes you wonder what kind of coach Timmy would be. I don't think he has any aspirations, but I think he'd be a damn good one.

I was thinking about this earlier. He would be a great coach or GM, in my opinion. He's one of those guys that sees and understands the game and can see what is unfolding on the court before it happens and I believe he could identify those that have the same traits.

It's that instinct of the game that usually makes great scouts, coaches, etc. regardless of NBA experience. Tim has both.
