For as energetic as Cuban is and how he caters to the players in every way possible, how many times have the Mavs whiffed on big free agent signings?

He wrote "may", which by today's journalism standards, you can write any bull**** you want as long as you qualify it with "may".

Knowing how irritated Cuban gets with people who go back on their word, I can't believe he hasn't told DeAndre to go back to the Clippers so he can watch Golden State or San Antonio sink them in the playoffs while they're paying tax out the ass.

He should find a way to trade Dirk to the Spurs for a bag of corn nuts so he can get another ring.

Chandler Parsons, JJ Redick, Blake Griffin and CP3 all in a transportation emoji twitter challenge. CP3's banana + boat is funny.

Not a Mavs fan. However, how does this NBA moratorium work? There was DEFINITE contact between DJ and Rivers (the GM, not the Coach), no matter who initiated the contact. Right? If this moratorium is indeed a "set in stone" rule, what are the penalties for LA? I would not be surprised if LA already checked on this but they are so desperate that I would not be surprised if they didn't. I will laugh if the NBA moves in and does not let DJ sign with LA if DJ does a 180.

On the other hand, the NBA might still harbor some ill will towards Cuban and decide to eff him and allow DJ's 180 to occur w/o any consequences.

No contract can be signed until the moratorium is over. So he can still change his mind.

How is this not tampering? If not, what's to prevent players from "agreeing" to sign with a team to tie up their cap space, and thus sabotage that team?

Also, I'm no lawyer, but don't implied contracts come into play as well?
Mavs will definitely have some claims they can bring in a lawsuit if he ends up going with the Clipps. They could have possible claims against both Deandre (promissory estoppel) because they relied on his verbal promises and the Clippers (tortious interference) for interfering with their verbal contract with Deandre. It will be interesting to see if they end up bringing them if he goes to the Clippers.

This rule definitely needs to be changed. I thought the Sixers/Kings trade really showcased why it needed to be changed. The Sixers obviously killed the Kings in the trade. But it doesn't go into effect until the 9th, so after the press starting making fun of the Kings and talking about how bad the trade was, they could have just backed out of it as long as they did so before the 9th? What's the point of even making trades or agreements with free agents then?

I don't think you understand what the moratorium is. It's a moratorium on signing, not contact.

And technically the Hawks could still butt f*** the Spurs and back out of the Splitter trade, thus sending LMA back into the free agent market. No one would ever make a deal with the hawks over the summer again though.

it took us 5 years from 2006 to recover from them meltown.

this sets us back another 5. if we lose deandre, we tank the season as cuban indicated. sit both parsons and wes for half the season. get a top 5 pick, since its protected. pick a stud. tank again next season since we've proven that we can't get a big free agent to sign and build through the draft or get lucky with the next dirk.

it was a great 15 year run. time to blow it up. i'll still go to the game to pay my respect to dirk, but only way out is draft.

Yea just because the contract wasn't inked in paper and signed doesn't mean there wasn't a contract in place. At least I don't see how you could argue there isn't a contract in place.

And, no disrespect to a good Aggie, but Jordan puts the "F" in "Flake." So who knows what he'll do.

Do the legal standards referenced apply to the NBA where a collection of franchises have agreed to operate under a certain set of rules and procedures? While I think this would suck, it seems like the NBA has its own set of rules.

Well, if nothing else the Clipps will have a great locker room environment with all those egos bottled up in such a small room. They're like the anti-Spurs.

I'm not sure about that. If the NBA has a clause in their franchise agreement that says they all agree that no matter what happens no verbal or written contracts will be considered to be formed in the moratorium period, I'm not sure if that clause would be enforceable or not. I'm guessing it hasn't been challenged before, but I could be wrong.

But to be clear, you don't need an actual contract to bring the promissory estoppel and the interference claims. You bring those when there isn't an actual contract.

Nobody is going to sue. Better to make DJ look like an *******, the Clipers as pariahs violating the unwritten rules, and just wear the white hat.

I disagree. I think Cuban will definitely sue or take some other legal action. I doubt he will sue Deandre bc you don't want to be known for suing players. But if I had to bet, I'd say he will sue the Clipps.

What a cruel ending to DIrk's career this would be. Deandre could put the nail in his coffin.

So let me get this straight.

1. DeAndre reportedly hates CP3.

2. Agent gives Doc ultimatum to trade CP3 or see DJ go bye bye.

3. Doc says no.

4. Clips give very "meh" effort to signing DJ.

5. DeAndre commits to Mavs.

6. All this **** happens.

Despite the billions and the fact that he can pretty much buy any thing (or woman) he wants, do you think during times like these that Mark thinks back to grade school and how un-cool he was?

The idea that teams can talk to players without actually signing them just begs for a situation like this to happen. The NBA just needs to allow contracts to be signed at the same time teams are allowed to talk to Free Agents.

His career was winding down anyway, no matter who is signed tomorrow. The overall failure of the front office to draft well and the giving away of picks with questionable trades spelled doom in these recent years. The Mavs (Cuban and front office) decision to go whole hog after the 2011 season and let some key folks walk in the off-chance of bringing in big free agents (namely Deron Williams, and then Dwight Howard) was also a big eff up. There's a mountain of other issues, but these are the ones I can recall directly.

As a Mavs fan, this is a disappointing development. Can't say I'm surprised by it, though. Too many pieces yet in place for this team to be anything more than a spoiler in the playoffs, which is likely a BIG component to this decision.

How dumb can Deandre be? He hates CP3 and wanted to leave. Clipps showed no interest in him. He goes to Mavs. Then the Clipps realize they may have to start Javale McGee so they act like they loved Deandre all along. How dumb do you have to be to fall fort that?

Does he think that CP3 is just all of a sudden going to be cool to him now? It's going to be even worse than it was before.

That's why I'm not all in on the suicide pact, yet. I assume that's the exact pitch Cuban will make. If he goes back to LAC, then he's the exact same as the rich oil guy that married a stripper and forgave her after she slept around and came crawling back because she loved his money. Well, that and an extra 3 dozen million dollars or whatever.
