Good lord. What do you talk about for 5 hours in what is basically a job interview?

Ideally, Dirk was giving FT lessons.

If the dust settles and re-building is an option, I am fine with that. In my opinion, it is better than hovering at the end of the lottery or barely making the playoffs.

Came across this article on the 1998 draft

Interestingly, the guys taken 3, 4, and 5 in that draft all spent significant time with Dallas, in addition to the guy taken 9.

The Mavs will absolutely miss the playoffs if they don't sign Jordan and Matthews. OKC will be back and the Suns may be better too now. Looking at 9th since Portland steps out and New Orleans remains strong.

I understand why Cuban and company made the moves they did. Bringing back Tyson, Aminu and Ellis would probably get the 8th seed again but that team isn't close to beating the Warriors or Cavs. Getting a nucleus of DeAndre, Parsons and Wes Mathews (even though 2 of those players are currently injured) is the final pipe dream before this era of Mavs basketball is over. It's a disservice to Dirks final 2 years that he will be stuck on a lottery team after taking those pay cuts. Too bad the Mavs can't just retroactively give Dirk a Kobe-esque 30 million for this upcoming season.

You don't think the Mavs are going to give him a VP President of Fadeaway Development or something bull**** like that when he retires to pay him back for giving up salary? I think Duncan and Manu are both going to take paycuts again this year and they will both get taken care of on the back end.

The Mavs are in serious trouble if they swing in miss with DJ. They likely sign enough to finish 8-10 in the West and then lose their first round pick thanks to the Rondo deal, while Parsons opts out and immediately bolts. Whole lot of future riding on DJ's decision.

Honestly, Dallas would be better off under that scenario if Dirk would just retire. That lottery pick next year to Boston is protected only through the 7th, and a team with Dirk and Parsons can't make the playoff, but it's also not one of the 7 worst teams in basketball.

Oh good. It'll be like Erick Dampier never left. Best in the West right?

either DJ signs (and, hopefully, WM), or we need to blow it up. sucks for dirk, but he'll be taken care of later.

Yall really think Jordan and Matthews are worth putting off a complete rebuild? Sounds like a borderline playoff team / late lottery team. If I were Cuban I'd dump everything and start over.

Word on the street is that DJ will follow Wes to Dallas, but will be staying in LAC is Wes goes elsewhere.

It's already blown up. Rebuilding requires landing key assets. That's where they are up against it.

he'd better talk to Wes then, because the other word is that Wes wants to sign with dallas, but is waiting to see if DJ is coming.

Whatever he chooses, better to do it sooner vs later so the team can bolster the roster around him. The longer this takes, the more I think its LAC.

@SInow: Wes Matthews is reportedly heading to the Dallas Mavericks on a four-year deal http://on.si.com/1JBqC3e http://twitter.com/SInow/status/616837501832048641/photo/1

Hopefully #6 next year as anything above 7th pick is unprotected.

Not to mention that he's recovering from an Achilles injury.

Saw Parsons in uptown tonight, seemed pretty confident we were getting DJ.

An average starter at best. Terrible signing at such a crazy salary. 16 mil for a 15 ppg scorer? Please. Dallas is on the way to five years of pick number 7-12.
He's an above-average starter, kind of like Parsons. Regardless, and I've stated it on this thread before, I'm fine with the Mavs tanking. They just have to tank enough to get pick 1-6 or else that goes to Boston haha. If DeAndre comes I think we can be pretty good. Championship caliber? No. But hopefully good enough to land a big fish next year, although we've said that a lot for a long time.

I think the inflation of these contracts has a lot to do with the cap going up so much next off-season?

Wesley is better than average and is a great team chemistry guy. If he can help bring DeAndre to Dallas than that would be a good signing. Certainly better than the alternative. The Mavs will be able to play very good defense with these new acquisitions if they can get Jordan.

Every contract is now nuts. This one doesn't seem worse than others, and it seems to be necessary to have any shot at Deandre.

True, but that is still a ridiculous amount to pay a guy like Wesley Matthews, especially coming off that Achilles injury. 30 mil + between him and parsons is insane. I think they overpaid him 4-5 mil. Look at Danny green and K Middleton contracts. Both better players IMO and both making less money and in greens case significantly less.

I'd rather have Green for his defense, but Matthews can at least put the ball on the floor. If Green isn't playing D, spotting up or signing early 80s love songs, he is pretty much useless.
