I am surprised at the lack of impact Lamine Yamal is having. I don't get to watch much of La Liga, but he was getting pumped so hard by the marketing machinery that I was expecting something special. I haven't seen it yet. He is good and attracts a lot of attention, but no real impact on the games, yet.
And, is it possible to say just Yamal or just Lamine? Every time it is Lamine Yamal, like his mom is yelling at him.

The dumbest rule in sports:

it's just so insane. absolutely ZERO advantage to yamal here

I mean, the advantage is he started his run just barely to early and was offside.

If he is a split second later and onside, he also maybe doesnt get in past the defender. It was a close thing as is.

Still a great run and great pass, and great composure to finish the play off.
Personally, I think we need to get VAR and 'automated' offside out of the game. The linesman either calls it live or doesnt. Its not in the spirit of the rule to have this current process.

Actual replay, not a still photo.

It was another exciting play that was nullified.

Soccer purists hate to hear it but their sport would be exponentially more popular if they would allow more plays like that. Fans like breakaway plays in many sports and soccer just suffocates that opportunity more than anyone.

Shut up, Mmmbop. If your sole purpose in this army wasn't to try to score as many goals as possible while playing absolutely no defense whatsoever, maybe Coach would have a different strategy.

I'm already going to remember this as the Cape Verde world cup, but with Spain now in the final and Argentina playing for a spot in the final, it's possible that the two teams that go for the title both were pushed to the absolute limit by Cape Verde.

0-0 Draw against Spain
2-3 Epic loss against Argentina in ET

They can keep their crazy nanosecond VAR line in place. Just change the rule to a player is offsides if no body part is even with the 2nd to last defender when the ball is played…much like the illegal forward pass in football. Nobody will complain if the offensive player doesn't have a single body part even with the defender's back shoulder, and no real advantage will be gained

This would seem to be the easiest decision in the history of rule changes. It can still be officiated accurately with their precious VAR, but it opens up the offensive game just a bit and leads to the kind of exciting plays that will continue to grow the game world wide.

I don't think anyone looks at that run in the France/Spain game and thinks... oh yeah, totally unfair advantage there. And at the core, the rules are supposed to make the game play fair, as currently enforced the rules tilt very heavily in favor of the defense. This includes the liberal amount of grabbing, pulling, tripping, pushing that is allowed by defenders that impacts the freedom of movement of players on and off the ball.

The problem is that only works with VAR. Live action at the lower levels with no VAR, it's almost impossible to tell when the player that is ahead has a body part even with a defender on the far side of the field. It's much easier to see say a red jersey past a white jersey than to see if a cleat/foot from an attacking player that is leaning is still even with a defender.

Agreed. But there will always be room for subjective interpretation. VAR or not, the point is that there needs to be more allowable room for an offensive player.

I would even allow for 3 feet of space between players before calling offsides. Basically arms length.

Can't be 100% precise but what we have now just really sucks and zaps the life out of athletic players showcasing their talents and excitement.

And the other problem is that it just moves the goalpost.

Our frustration with offside is less about the rule itself and more about the delayed enforcement after a goal.

If you have VAR - even under the better MLS rules - then the refs hold the call till after the goal happens. It robs us of our joy.

Offside is far less frustrating when they blow the whistle live and the goal never happens. I'd much rather have that and have them sometimes be fractionally wrong than have VAR enforcement and be 100% correct but steal the joy of goals… and it's also a player safety issue… defenders tend to be a bit more reckless trying to stop a goal. If you whistle for offside immediately and kill the goal scoring opportunity, it means these frantic challenge situations happen less frequently in a game.

I think that it would be easier to officiate to say that the attacker must be fully clear of the defender for it to be offside compared to what we do now.

Also worth noting that not that long ago the rule was if any part of the attacker is level with the defender then it's offside. So changing it further wouldn't be some unprecedented alteration.

That would be awful…in that case a very tight call could prevent a legitimate goal. To me, getting the call right is the priority despite "joy".

I used to be an ardent defender of VAR for similar reasons. I wanted calls to be right.

Then I watched nearly a full season of non-VAR soccer in EFL Championship as a Wrexham fan. Changed my perspective completely. So I'm not just speaking hypothetically when I say I want this.

VAR ruins the game. It certainly doesn't help with gray-area judgement calls (VAR still messes those up), it slows down the game, and makes it far less enjoyable (also far less agonizing, and both sides of that coin are what make soccer great).

Great analysis on the Spanish team. Most teams are built around a star player while they are built around a system that everyone has bought into. All other teams in the final 4 had a player in the running for the golden boot. Not Spain. A single player can be neutralized but it is much harder to stop a system as evidence by the fact that Spain has had the most difficult path to the final and yet has only allowed one goal. This is theirs to win.

Spain is playing exactly how Arsenal want to play. Team/Control first above everything else. If you can control and strangle the match, the other team isn't going to be able to do anything. This probably why a lot of people (myself included) have been disappointed in Yamal. He has many more defensive responsibilities with Spain than with Barcelona. Also why he keeps giving away dangerous free kicks.

The downside is Spain are also having some of the creative issues that Arsenal has as well. And in the end, you just turn to the greatest striker who some genius forced to play midfield in Mikel Merino to win the match in stoppage time.

Yokel's anthem reviews
The Argentine anthem is a third rate late Classical composition with music written by a Spaniard. I listened to a recording of the vocals since those may not come across well in a stadium and well, it still isn't very good.

God Save the King is one of the oldest and simplest anthems in the world. Many English fans would prefer Jerusalem, as used for English cricket. Anyway, it is better than Argentina's.

As much as I would like to predict an English loss in PKs or on a handball by Messi that gets missed by VAR, I think the English take this one 2-1.

I know two of the referee's that are taking part in the WC right now. I'm going to ask them about some of the OS calls.

At times, a guy seem like he's WAY off, but no flag until after the goal. Then, in other situations, the guy is a toe off and the flag goes up....like, why is it so inconsistent.

I'm going to ask them about the Balogun red card and why the guy who officiated the Turkey game was suspended by his own federation but allowed to referee the WC.

Point is, they were framing it like it was going to motivate these players against each other, when in reality these players all know each other already and aren't going to suddenly hate each other on the field. IMHO. Felt overly melodramatic.

Eh, the Argentines are still pretty pissed about the Falkland Islands (less than 15% consider the UK claim legitimate). Whether and how much the individual players care, I don't know.

And if the fans are feisty, it absolutely transfers somewhat to the players.

And we're seeing a **** ton of fouls. So maybe there's actually something to this besides manufactured drama…

A few things are true:

1) Rivalries don't mean nearly as much at the player-level than they used to, now that players play in foreign countries much more than before and switch club teams all the times

2) Rivalry is mostly channeled by the fans doing things like the English just did…singing over the other's national anthem.

3) The players still are affected by the energy in the stands. And we had a cheap shot and near-fight about 90 seconds into the match.

4) The media is always melodramatic. That's how they think they make their money!
