They showed it. Messi was onside comfortably. He just got a good jump and England was flat footed, so it looked off.

yes, they showed it....looked just onside, but wasn't a freeze frame from VAR. But, of course we get no freeze frame like we do with all the other goals, cuz reasons

correct, on saturday. they should honestly do away with the 3rd place game though. it's silly to subject these guys to more injury risk for 3rd place and make them stick around another few days after they're depressed and just ready to get some R&R. the top leagues kick it back off in just 5 weeks or so, and exhibitions and training camp before that.

Yeah, it seems kind of weird. You think they could come up with a third place based on their performance and the other games.

Oh well, the life of a professional footballer I guess.

Do they get any kind of bonuses?

The only thing I like about having a third place game is that it increase the odds that the US will remain the only team outside South America or Europe to finish 3rd or better at a WC. (Obviously that's guaranteed this year.)

That was so pathetic from Tuchel. Went ultra defensive with 30 minutes left. Prevent defense. Prevent win. As that got flatter and narrower, Messi moved out wide. They ceded him space and what happened? He unlocked them because that is what Messi does. He's done it his entire career. Again so pathetic from Tuchel.

As for Argentina, the head coach said at the start of the tournament "we didn't come here to win another World Cup. We came to defend our title." You can see that it in their mentality. They believe the World Cup is theirs. They believe someone is going to have to pry it out of their hands.

I also noticed that Messi moved out of the middle and over to the right. Once he was in less traffic, Argentina just dominated. I don't know whose idea that was, but it was brilliant.

It is still just baffling to me what England did. The game was pretty even up until the goal at which point they just conceded all emphasis of the game to Argentina. How Tuchel watches that happening and doesn't say something at the hydration break to get them back onto the front foot is unforgiveable. I saw a stat that said between the goal and the 85th minute, England completed 2 passes. Then they reemphasized that by taking all the attackers off and putting on more and more defense. You simply cannot do that with a team with Messi on it.

Yes, on the one hand it seems completely insane.

On the other hand, it seems like the same stupid crap England does all the time.

From England's goal to Argentina's second goal, Argentina had 88% possession. Just bafflingly bad tactics. Saw a talking head on Instagram talking about how Argentina has had some trouble passing the ball up the field this tournament, and England basically just said "you don't have to… walk the ball up to the final third.

Didn't have a huge preference for a winner but you just hate to see anyone go out like a b####.

putting messi out wide worked over and over for argentina in this game and previous ones. to be honest, i don't know why argentina wasn't playing in that mode more often but i know messi likes to work from the middle a lot.

Part of me wonders if Tuchel was thinking too far ahead.

Knowing that his guys were gonna have a day less of rest against Spain and the fact that they had already played two extra time games - maybe the strategy all along was gonna be to score first and then bunker. It'd be perhaps a ruthless German logic that told him that if he can't win this game while trying to limit end-to-end running, then it doesn't matter because he wasn't gonna win the final with dead legs.

I honestly can't criticize Bellingham's reactions. I don't like to see it, but in the famous words of Chris Rock: "I understand." Lord knows what things happened to piss him off, but I have no doubt that plenty of BS happened.

Argentina play really nasty and always have.

Their first WC win involved heavy ref intimidation and other blatant shenanigans as host nation. Their second had literal cheating (Hand of God).

Similar to Leeds in "The Damned United" - Argentina have always been the poster child for playing the game the wrong way. I hate watching them. I could abide the 2022 result because it let Messi get a trophy, but they're my least favorite country to watch.

And I could also speak to their whole country's history of racism (it's definitely worse than ours) but I'd like to limit the amount of politics leaking onto this board.
