You know what it's a little bit like? We loaned Sancho with an obligation to buy to Chelsea, and all you heard about into the second half of the year was "obligation to buy" period. And then, in the second half the reports were suddenly, "Obligation to buy provided Chelsea don't pay the fee to return him to United…."

And everyone then went, "Wait…… what?!??"

Where does that show a grudge? Usually info from Fabrizio Romano is pretty reliable.

In fairness I wouldn't be thrilled with Berge either. Am hoping that a new target would appear much in the same way Santos did. While there are reports now that United have scouted him and retained an interest for a while, don't think I saw anyone previously list him as a target.

I mean, unless we try to hijack this Bruno G. pursuit (which I wouldn't be against, I know he's a little older than we like, though, and SJR reportedly hated the Casemiro signing due to age and wage during his purchase negotiations), I can't think of an experienced midfield signing that would fit your criteria and in the top shelf category and potentially attainable.

I'd be pretty happy with that, personally, but I'm just not sure it's something the club would want. And he's really the only one I can think of.

I was pretty up front in saying that I too have no idea who that might be.

There seems to be more talk about landing either Alex Scott or Adam Wharton than Berge, which I would love to have either of them, but I am sure they will cost considerably more.

I know, but I don't think it even exists. Maybe Tielemans at Villa is you ignore his age, that he's important for Villa, and that we probably wouldn't pay enough for him because of his age? Hard to even come up with a name.

Ross Harwood is claiming the second Ederson medical is done and Ederson to United is on. Rumors that Ederson picked up a meniscus injury at the end of the season. United wanted a more thorough medical to make sure it wasn't a serious issue.

Harwood also claiming United are now likely to ramp up efforts to sign Baleba who still wants a move to United.

Of the players that are still remaining on United's list from the start of the summer, his skillset seems to be the one that complements Santos and Ederson the most.

But I don't like dealing with Brighton who are reportedly still asking for 80m for him even though he regressed significantly last season (which I also don't like) and he only has 2 years left on his contract. 80m is way too high considering that Fernandes went for 85m and 1) had a better season than Baleba 2) had more years on his contract than Baleba and 3) is slightly younger than Baleba. As unrealistic as it is, I'll be shocked if Brighton agree to anything substantially less.

I'm grasping at the straw that Baleba was just unhappy about not getting the move to United last year and played poorly as a result. He was better by the second half after the fervor had subsided.

I still really like Baleba. But… I'm also really stubborn. I like him athletically, and that's still there. I mean, he's not tall, and a lot of our targets aren't which is a little worrying since Casemiro was good in the air and had a lot of header goals last year. But he's quick, he has a strong looking frame, and I think even last year he was still good at defense and carrying. And he only has two years left on his contract, I believe, so if Brighton wants maximum sell on value, likely this is the year to sell. If we could get a price that started with a 6… even if add ons were like 10M… He's a different profile from our other purchases.

I'd be a little sad that we didn't get something with more of a track record, but Anderson is like only two years top level and he still went for the English record, Tcouameni was evidently a thing to get the big contract from Madrid (I think I saw 400K per week; good for him). I mean, it's ok to wish for that, but I think when it doesn't happen, you can't get as upset as some people seem to be getting (granted, social media rewards being performative).

Oh and if anyone wants 10% sell on clauses from us like Chelsea… sure, knock yourself out. lol. Our signings either work and we keep them until they fall apart, or they don't and we sell for a loss, and the only question is how much we lose. So, yeah, 10%, enjoy.

(That kind of made me laugh inside a little).

In the interests of equal time, the counter argument would be that, for most of the year, you would watch Brighton and say, "Wait… Ugarte can only pass sideways… and this is the solution?!?!"

I hope this truly is a matter of there was something in the medical that they decided wasn't worth the risk vs there was something in the medical that they used as an excuse.


Edit: there are now posters saying United have denied the deal is off at the moment.

People are saying Atalanta told Fab it was off. But United haven't confirmed with the press. There's never a smooth sailing window at United is there.

I bet it's off but we didn't want to announce it the same day we signed Santos lol. Leaked from Atalanta side because they don't care about our PR.

If I remember correctly he had a medial in NY while at the WC and then a 2nd was scheduled after the WC. If it's off, it would indicate that they found something they didn't like in the first medical in which case you'd think they would have been prepping Plan B for a while now.

Unlikely to find that kind of value now if/when they go for his replacement. Season starts in 6 weeks.

Saw a similar rumor of Manu Kone for 55m and honestly, I'd sabotage Ederson's medical records if we could get that deal done.
