Thank god they're hiring a capable coach. He's going to command respect from our guys.

This would be a fantastic hire!

Hats off to USSF if this is true. He's one of the best available coaches right now.

We didn't hire Tottenham Hotspur to be our coach, we hired a coach who coached Tottenham Hotspur to be our coach.

Well he did flunk at PSG. I won't hold Chelsea against him. He got Boehly'ed there.

Ironically Timmy Tickles almost had them winning it.

Poch has his weaknesses and liabilities but as Jjxvi mentioned a page back, his preferred tactics are a great fit for the talent. Just keep him away from talent identification, let the international aspect keep him from burning out, and this should be a solid move.

I'm not sure what to think.

Big big name- surprised USSF was able to do this (I thought we were broke when we simply rehired Gregg last time), should command some respect from the players in the pool.

Actually pleasantly surprised it didn't take too too long to get someone. September friendlies upcoming and we got the new coach in August.

Two years for the home WC and done?

Come on, guys, y'all know I'm not trolling, nor trying to be funny or clever.

I didn't want Gregg to be fired, but it happened. I want another former player as the coach, and Cherundolo is the guy.

Just to add, Gregg was a very successful USMNT coach. I have zero confidence in this foreigner…

People said the exact same thing when Klinsmann was hired…

If the Athletic is reporting it, it might as well be official.

The people who said that were ignoring the signals that he wasn't a great coach and were more enamored by the name, profile, and potential ability to Europeanize US soccer as a whole rather than his ability to be tactically proficient.

Even when he was hired, a lot of people (not necessarily here in the US) cautioned that his success with the German national team was largely due to his assistant (Low) and he fell on his face at Bayern. Hindsight is 20/20. I probably made some comments at some point that suggested it would all be fine. But the signals were most definitely there.

Pochettino may fail miserably but his coaching record is light years ahead of Klinsmann's then and even Klinsmann's now. I can't think of a coach with more high level experience and success that the US would have a reasonable chance of getting.

This.

He's almost unanimously a Top 4 coach who's available right now. And among those, I think he's the best in terms of fit. At worst, he's #2 behind Klopp, but I suspect Klopp would lose his mind trying to manage CONCACAF road games. Zidane and Tuchel absolutely would.

The best European coach for us is the one who's not a European.

Sporting News:

Quote:

Maurico Pochettino tactics, coaching style

The Argentine boss employs a high pressing tactical style, employing a 4-2-3-1 formation which utilizes an intense counter-press that looks to win the ball back in dangerous areas, often at the sacrifice of the team's defensive structure. However, Pochettino is known for his flexibility, and has a strong familiarity with the 4-3-3 that the U.S. often found itself in under Gregg Berhalter.

While Pochettino's teams show intensity after losing the ball, they also insist on building from the back in possession and reaching the opposition half in an organized set-up, which suits the international football game.

Unfortunately, Pochettino may have to be flexible when it comes to his heavy usage of talented full-backs or even wing-backs in advanced areas, as it is not a position of great depth in the United States. He loves to bomb a full-back high up the pitch (think Nathaniel Clyne at Saints, or Kieran Trippier at Spurs), with the three trailing defenders providing back-line cover and the winger on that side drifting centrally (think Heung-Min Son at Spurs, or Kylian Mbappe at PSG) to make room out wide and create attacking overloads.

Where Pochettino may be especially useful at a high-level CONCACAF side is up against defensive low blocks, which he managed against often when PSG matched up against most other Ligue 1 sides. Even loaded with such talented attacking talent at PSG, Pochettino had to teach the likes of Mbappe and Neymar intricate passing moves to break down bunkered opponents. The USMNT, in turn, has often had trouble breaking down bunkered opponents when matching up against the numerous lower-tier football nations within its own confederation, and Pochettino's experience in this area will be critical.

However, the Argentine's tactics can at times be too detailed, an area of concern at his first national team job. At Chelsea, Pochettino's young squad struggled to grasp the intricacies of his high press, which resulted in strong attacking volume but also continued defensive breakdowns.

A hallmark of Pochettino's coaching style is his reputation as a manager who players enthusiastically support. According to multiple reports, Chelsea players were "shocked" and "unhappy" with Pochettino's dismissal earlier this summer, just the latest example of his managerial style being well received by the squad.

Yeah we're not deep at fullback but if he loves to have them bomb upfield Robinson and Dest are two good ones to have.

I'm happy with this...kinda surprised they pulled it off, was kinda expecting them to somehiw re-hire GGG or Arena again. Thank goodness we had the pressure of hosting the WC riding on their conscious.

I looked it up so y'all don't have to. Poch is undefeated in his two matches against Marsch. Won one drew one.

I think Poch is a good coach and he's had success in high-level leagues. Eliminates a big gripe among fans (they'll find another though). Will he be successful here? IDK, but I don't think it'll be a disaster.

I just want us to start being competitive with good teams from outside CONCACAF.

Also he does utilize some formalwear on the sidelines on occasion, so I'm excited for the several of you who think that's important.

Capable is an understatement. Poch probably walks in the door a top 5 international manager.

INSANE we're going from the likes of Arena and Greggg to him.
Just gotta execute

I'm going to say I think this is just about the best hire US Soccer could make. If it was next year, maybe, maybe someone convinces Klopp to take a run at the WC. But, he was never going to say yes to anyone now.

Pochettino is a top-quality manager. He brings some gravitas to the program.

Nice breakdown, but I do wonder if the author forgot that Dest is a fullback who likes to bomb forwards (and Robinson too for that matter)… or if maybe they mean that our CBs won't be effective at covering (which is already a concern IMO now that Ream is declining).

we do have some full backs with speed, fitness, and attacking skills that will get forward and make effective overlapping runs. just not that many of them. Dest and Antonee for sure. We just don't have that many of them. At all. ....and then I think most of our CB depth is too slow to allow playing with wing-backs or having a full back get too high.

Weah is also a good option there too, no? I know he's a winger for the USMNT but he's played quite a bit as a wing back for Juve. Dest should start but we do at least have him as an option there.

Yes. at RB, Weah could be an option.
