An American who has great international experience and understands US soccer as well. I don't get what's not to like.

Klopp ain't coming.

Agreed, the realistic pool just doesn't make me do backflips, but is what it is. There's a handful of names that would have me do backflips, but as long as Gregg's out, I'm hopeful

Due to the commitments US Soccer has made to equal pay it is going to be impossible to hire a big name coach like Klopp. You would essentially have to pay double for him as you would have to raise the USWNT coach to the same level. Like it or not, that is the direction we have chosen.
that's what was initially thought, but that's been debunked. the coaching salaries don't have to be equal, just the players pay I believe

For about the 20th time, there's no official equality of pay measure for head coaches.

I wish Gregg nothing but the best, however, I have not felt this patriotic since we got bin Laden.

Great news.

I've seen multiple actual journalists say this is not true

One quote is a coach with a passion for player development.
That's not the USMNT managers job, they develop at their clubs.

I thought they'd pull the trigger on Berhalter and now I do think they'll get someone outside of the US soccer inner circle. It won't be Klopp but it also won't be Cherundolo (yet). Maybe that's undue optimism but I think Crocker hasn't been fully tainted yet by that historical culture. I can't imagine he'd be happy with continuously rubber stamping decisions that are the same decisions that have been made for 20 years. Why take the job if they'll pay you the same, if not less, then you could make in English club football and they'll give you little leeway to deviate from the old or give you the room to make change?

I guess this poses a question for me:

1. The coach does not need to be an American, correct? (I guess this is obvious from our pursuit of Jurgen Klopp)
2. Is there a robust coaching development path out there for American coaches? (i.e. are there Americans in coaching circles in other European / International leagues?)

"How rejuvenating does a home World Cup sound?"

Ummm… is there such a thing as negative rejuvenating? Like it's extremely exciting and potentially incredible, but that's not what rejuvenating means.

I don't think they need to "be American" but I do think they need to be familiar with the current state of the sport here and the unique challenges posed by the size of the nation. You can't hire a guy who thinks they can come in and run things like they're in Germany or Portugal or even England.

Pretty much everyone who's serious about being a top level coach obtains their UEFA coaching credentials. A lot might have their USSF licenses, but UEFA is still the benchmark.

This is part of what I didn't fully understand from people that want him. If he can't communicate with the players, how effective is it. Does he just have an assistant that is bilingual translate everything and stay at his side?

I.remember Hugo Perez being a name that was brought up that might be interesting
Apparently this Wilfried Nancy is a French coach at the Crew who has them playing attractive soccer.
Oscar Pareja would not be the worst result either.

Not as familiar with the realistic European options, and I think just naming top club coaches is not realistic.

Herve Renard didn't know Arabic and had a translator with him 24/7 for his stint with Saudi. (It is worth noting given the topic, though, that Renard spoke English to the players).

Speaking of Renard, if we go cheap again, I hope we go after him. If nothing else, his presence on the touchline would finally get my wife to watch soccer with me.

The US at this point needs a coach willing or reputable enough on his own merits to make hard and ultimately unpopular decisions in the face of what is a toxic and unreasonable fan base.

The players need to be able to do the job for the game at hand and if they cant, then just because your 23 and play on a champions league club doesnt automatically mean your spot is guaranteed. Either a fire needs to lit under young players to make them go above and beyond when playing for country, or older and experienced players who can do dirty work need to be picked even if they are less talented.

I think it pretty much has to be a high profile European, someone who can command respect of fans and players and also for whom our fans are nbd compared to what they are used to. I think a business as usual type American or even just a foreign national team journeyman coach could struggle for this particular job getting players and fan base on board.

" in the face of what is a toxic and unreasonable fan base."

I'll give you toxic given what we have seen since 2018, but not sure how our fan base is unreasonable. Seems the majority just wanted something different than Greggg 2 years ago at a minimum. No one expects us to win everything, but we surely expect to be competitive.
