But but manager at the international level doesn't matter.

This is the second most important tournament for women's national teams. Amazing to see so many empty seats.
Group stage match without the host country playing so not entirely unexpected.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Love this team. Smith, Rodman, and Pugh are the bomb. So much more aggressive and creative than past years. Back line has been a little shaky. Wish we had Sauerbrunn.

Wasn't sure where to put this but figured this works as it's the US's group.

Ridiculous match yesterday between Zambia and Australia, Zambia was up 5-2 in the 57th minute before the Aussies came back to tie it on a penalty then win it in the 90th. Absolutely insane.

Boy that Zambia goalkeeper, man what a tough game she had.

Davidson and Shaw are both ruled out of the match against Australia. Sonnett starts as CB next to Girma. We have no more CB's left on the roster!

Good thing this game is meaningless.

Think that was the correct call, player was in an offside position but didn't appear to affect the play at all.

Lot of communication issues between Sonnett, Girma and Nighswonger. Need to tighten that up. Australia should've scored on that free header but then again, Smith got unlucky her deflected shot bounced off both posts and stayed out.

Absolutely was correct and it wasn't even close to being offside.

Canada wins and advances despite their penalty for spying.

There was a player in an offside position that did not interfere in the play.

Kind of odd they did not force a forfeit of their first game and then a 3 point deduction. 6 points in a 12 team tournament was unlikely to hurt them given their group.

I almost think this is what they wanted: to enforce a penalty but not have it impact the team's group fate.

I didn't say there wasn't. Just being in an offside position is not an offside offense.

She was no where near the keeper and no defender that even moved.

Not even close to offside.

Anyone else out there not missing the old hags that would be *****in about not scoring goals or getting called offside or getting rained on during the Opening Ceremonies or not getting to hold the flag or not having enough free time to see the other events. or whatever else there is toe complain about at these Olympics?

or is it just me that's not missing Rapinoe, Morgan, and the rest?

It seems the team is really having fun playing futbol and has been focused on the task at hand. This makes watching the team so much more enjoyable.

Going to be tough against Japan with Coffey suspended due to yellow card accumulation. If Davidson is fit, then most likely it will be Sonnett replacing Coffey. Otherwise, Albert slides in to the 6 spot?

No disagreement. I used offside position specifically because her position alone did not make her guilty of being offsides.

I was telling my brother that it was great that they got rid of the old players and allowed the younger players control the destiny of the USWNT. I think the USMNT should follow suit. Our men's Olympic team (primarily our U-23) plays significantly better than the senior team.

There's like 4 players in primary rotation on the USMNT who are over 25.

Edit: and 2 of them are playing on the Olympic team.

And Tim Ream won't be there for too much longer.

Now if we can find a solid replacement for Matt Turner we might get to a better spot sooner than later.

I expect to see Tim Ream playing into his 50s

But yeah, he and Zimmerman will likely be on the fringes of the next WC squad if they go. And of the others outside keepers, Robinson and Robinson are 26 and 27 (and Jedi is one of our best players).

The two situations couldn't be further apart. USWNT was mired in cronyism because that team is the gravy train for its players, so removing someone means cutting them off from their main source of income. And vice-versa… keeping the stars playing is good for merch and ticket sales. They actively ignored players who were doing better at their clubs just to let their stars ride into the sunset awhile longer.

With a few debatable exceptions, the men's team has the guys who are playing at the highest level. No one is getting egregiously left out for an old star.

My main point is that the USMNT is underachieving.

Exactly. Not long ago the average age of the starters was 31. For these olympics it's 27.

Still older than the men' senior team, but not like 7+ years different.

Yeah, but we all know why they are.

And so did the women in the World Cup.

Is it?

Men's soccer is a different beast than women's.

In a world that almost singlehandedly focuses on men's soccer, it's the 4th, at best, most popular sport here. Time, money, athletes have for generations gravitated towards sports other than soccer. In other nations, men play almost exclusively soccer.

American women, until the last decade or so, have enjoyed a nearly exclusive opportunity to become professional athletes. Laws have been crafted to make it easier. Money, time, effort have all been poured into female athletes at scales not seen anywhere else. There's not a social stigma against a woman pursuing a professional career.

It's neither surprising nor unpredictable that American women have dominated the soccer world while the men have struggled. It would be surprising if that was flipped.

I do wonder if the American women will lose their place of dominance now that Europe has heavily invested into professional women's soccer while the professional leagues here are still amateurish.

Luckily, we're not doing the same thing and hoping for the same results. Recently, they've changed the NWSL rules to allow minors in. We had a 14 year old make her debut this season. Kennedy Fuller, King Koda's daughter, should be going into her senior year and playing well in the NWSL.

Title IX was the key to the women's success and also a recent detriment.

Our women will not win as often, but with the right coaching they'll continue to compete.

I think the USMNT have been underperforming on the global stage… but not as much as some. Basically, I think we have the talent to make the WC quarterfinals but anything past that is probably overachieving.

In decades to come I could see us continuing to improve, but I laugh at talking heads who act like we should be making finals. The talent just isn't there currently.
Who?mikejones!

Yes. Pretty standard results. The coach should've never been brought back.

We're still the best in our region and it's not really close. The problem is we are the southland conference and we need to beat sec teams to have success.

I disagree that we are heads and shoulders better than Mexico and Canada. Based on ranking, Mexico is ranked right behind us.

I do agree, however, that NAFU doesn't prepare us for the SEC of world soccer (Europe and South America).

I think our present group of USMNT is one of the most talented (offensively) we have fielded. Unfortunately, the lack of guidance at the top is not getting the most out of the talented. Kids play robotically and are afraid to be creative when facing top shelf competition.

I don't see this in the group of largely U-23 players on the Olympic Team. I really like what I see thus far. In spite of the loss to France.
