If Steffen gets loaned out then it will put a lot of pressure on Turner to get consistent playing time either at Arsenal (not likely) or a loan if he wants to be GK1.

We all think Berhalter's personal preference is Steffen.

Bryan Reynolds has been loaned out to KVC Westerlo in Belgium. I dont see him being able to make the WC roster unless he has a breakout season for them.

He'll compete for '26 WC but no chance he makes '22 WC. He's currently behind Yedlin, Cannon, Moore and Scally for the backup RB spot. There's only 2 friendlies left and I can't see Berhalter bringing someone brand new to Sept. camp.

Even in '26, there's a chance he doesn't make WC either with all the young talent coming through the pipeline. It's pretty exciting to have quality options that gets left off because of the sheer number of talented players at each position.

Agreed. He is one season and one injury away from being the starting right back though. I could see him having a break out season, getting bought by a Bundesliga club and earn a starting spot for them to get him name back into the convo for that RB spot.

Turner is better. Not sure why Berhoktrr thinks that.

Steffen has been bad in all of his recent USMNT starts. I am not sure why Berhalter sees him as #1.

Turner will probably start 7 games out of 23 for Arsenal before the World Cup barring an injury to Ramsdale.

I've mentioned this before (and thought it might even spoil the Aaronson deal) but it's possible that Adams to Leeds won't happen until an old dispute between the two clubs gets resolved.

Edit to change to a source with better cross-links that explain the situation

You all must have forgotten that Berhalter coached Steffen every day for the Crew for 4-5 seasons. So Berhalter saw him in training daily and for something around 200 games over his career. I think they even won or played in an MLS Cup together. he hasn't seen anywhere near that with Matt Turner.

Steffen has been Berhalter's #1 already. That's a huge difference.

Steffen to Middlesbrough on loan.

If he's our starter in Qatar, we don't get out of the group.

I'm convinced I'd rather have Turner, but Steffen isn't that bad.

Middlesbrough loaned out their starting keeper to Reading so appears that Steffen is going to be the starter.

Consistent minutes will help with Steffen's subpar decision making. Don't think he'll ever be an elite shot stopper like Turner but this will definitely help for the WC.

Anyone know if Middlesbrough builds out of the back like ManCity and the US?

Only time will tell. Personally I think it's a great move. He will get much needed game time

steffen scares me with his poor decision making. He seems to always make errors with his feet and or bad passes.

Those are valid concerns. I hope more consistent playing time will help him improve in those areas. I don't think he's a game-changing liability others might.

That's fair. I would love to see him get 20+ starts between now and the WC.

Probably a good move for Steffin, and I agree the best way for him to improve his decision-making is to actually play games.

That said, I thought Turner's comments on training methods were interesting too… if you're a GK that's already strong on the mental side of the game, I think training against elite athletes, at elite facilities, from elite coaches and occasionally getting some games may actually be better than playing regularly in a lower league. Turner certainly seemed to think that would be the case.

For any outfield position, match fitness is a huge concern… but for keepers it's really not about match fitness, but match mentality. I don't think Turner is going to lose his edge there just cause he's not playing regularly. He has ice in his veins… perhaps literally after Minnesota

My big concern is that the playing time bias + ggg's preexisting Steffin bias makes it a foregone conclusion that Steffin will be our starting keeper, when it may very well be that Turner improves his game in the fall but ggg won't notice or care because he's not starting.

Steffen is a great keeper. Man City doesn't have bad keepers for their #2 position. The guy just needs minutes, and I am happy he went out seeking minutes.

I hope Middlesborough is terrible this year and he has to face 10-15 shots a game.

It's about the split second decision making that can't be replicated in training.

That's what I meant by "match mentality." I just don't see Turner losing it enough and Steffin gaining it enough in those 3 months before the WC to change who's our best keeper.

Looks like history is repeating itself. Leipzig and Leeds don't have a great working business relationship
deadbq03

Yeah I thought it's a bit ironic that Leipzig won't sanction a transfer but will sanction a loan considering the busted deal in court of arbitration right now was a loan.

Or maybe they've basically settled out of court and are using this as a way to let Leeds save face… like maybe they're going to be paying Leipzig a big loan fee on top of a big optional transfer fee, and Leipzig agree to drop their case on the old Augustin deal.

It can't hurt, but I'm not sure that smooths over Leeds reneging on a 21M Euro deal.

Everton coming in strong for Adams after getting money from the sale of their diving champion. Supposedly their officials are in Leipzig this weekend.
