Sherrill was the head coach at Mississippi State University from 1991 to 2003... Sherrill also achieved notoriety by castrating a bull during a team practice as a motivational technique prior to a game versus Texas. It worked, as unranked Mississippi State beat the #13 ranked Longhorns.

And for all the whorns perusing our board:

...and Sherrill was never personally found guilty of any NCAA rules violations at either Mississippi State or Texas A&M.

he was very aware of the rules and would push the limits. that is why the NCAA did not like him. THere are several "jackie" rules in the book. One of my favorites is the way he would bring stud players to the university. Via helicopter adn would land on Klye. He would also call recruits during big games. He was ver good and could out think the rule makers.

I think it was Joe Paterno who once said he would never retire, because doing so meant he would be leaving college football to the likes of Bobby Bowden and Jackie Sherrill. That's a paraphrase, but I think I got the basic meaning right.

Do Ags consider Paterno to be an honorable guy? If so, his opinion of Sherrill is illuminating to say the least.

Um, his opinion is also colored by the fact that he and Sherrill were rivals when Sherrill was at Pitt. So no, I don't give it much credence.

won't be able to give any links to "back this up," but these are my observations re: joe paterno....

extremely honorable, but highly competitive...recruited and coached against jackie for several years...many who have done that are "anti-jackie"

and it seems that over the years, he and bowden have become good friends

I believe JoePa's quote was in reference to Jackie and Barry Switzer (not Bowden).

The classic line from Paterno's whining was Sherrill's response, "I guess I'll have to beat Paterno in a bowl game now to get my apology."

FWIW, Paterno and Sherril have a friendly relationship. Joe Pa hosted Jackie at his home this year or last up at Happy Valley.

Joe Paterno = a yankee who doesn't like to lose to his rival = grain of salt.

...kind of like sips - without the yankee part.

The quote wasn't Jackie Sherrill and Joe
Paterno, it was Jackie Sherrill and Barry
Switzer (which makes more sense).

I know! Talk about a motivational speech.

I think of Jackie as I do of a crew chief in NASCAR...they don't cross the line but they lean real hard on it.

Joe Paterno is a legend. He also chases Officials off the field at the end of a game in order to argue a call. Two or three seasons ago he did it repeatedly and made a spectacle of himself. He is very competitive, thus what he said back then regarding Pitt. PSU was the king of the hill until Sherrill came along.

On a side note, I saw him in the Zone Club at the Maroon and White Game.
Say what you will about him, but he single-handedly brought A&M football into national prominance. We've since squandered it, but he brought us there.

Just so you all know....Paterno came out later and said that he had regreted making that statement from the minute it came out of his mouth. Paterno is a stand up guy, and guys with his loyalty and passion are few and far between.

There's no doubt about that. We hate Jackie because he beat us and because we're convinced he knew something about the FedEx money payments being made to some Aggie players. The revenge we got against his MSU squad in the Cotton Bowl some years later was especially sweet.

You can have the revenge against MSU.. I'll keep the sweep of 6 in a row with Jackie's Aggies against the sips.

Well if you ever fire Fran, perhaps you can rehire Sherrill. I'd love to have another crack at Sherrill in College Station and you can be DeLoss Dodds would have the NCAA pouring all over Aggieland if there was even a whiff of impropriety going on.

Jackie not only beat the the sips at their own game while at A&M but after he left his legacy kept beating them. The sips are just mad because they cheated to beat us still couldn't do it.

No one has cheated more than tu throughout the years it's just that tu gets it buried. If you, however, look you will find them. tu has had every sport on probation and'or violations at one time or another.

That's why you have impotent little troll p ussies like alexwhensip (who couldn't bust a grape on fruit fight) over here obsessing over us everyday.

I'd love to have another crack at Royal in an era of scholarship limitations and limits on his ability to cheat. Chances are, the stadium wouldn't bear his name given those circumstances.

It was awesome attending A&M during the Jackie years.

The 12th man kickoff team
Kyle Field was rocking
beating tu on a regular basis
winning Cotton Bowls
having a defense that opponents feared

Those were the days

You know I had the same conversation with a group of Texas football coaches once upon a time. For some reason the topic switched to Sherrill vs. Royal (this was after RC Slocum's first 5 years as Aggie HC, so some memory of Sherrill had faded and of course Royal was long retired) debate on which guy was the more standout guy. Oddly enough most of them thought more of Royal even though they hadn't even dealt with him while a few of them had had contact with Sherrill.

I guess we forget about people's feet of clay when they become legends. Royal probably got more leeway than Sherrill did since he coached decades earlier than Sherrill. Still it's interesting that people who met and dealt with Sherrill still picked the legend over someone they knew.

Yes, MBA, I'm aware of what I wrote. Just because I am a UT partisan doesn't mean I think the Longhorns are never wrong or that DKR was a saint who never did a bad thing in his life.

My Father ('60) instilled a deep hatred of JoePa that continues with me ('89)to this day.
Dad hated him so much I can't even explain why I hate JoePa other than my dad did.
