Again, I hate acedemic smack. But I hate more the single individual who becomes the voice of America and says no one has ever heard of A&M, etc.
I am the most objective person here, just check my name.
I actually have clients (Fortune 100) throughout the country (well world really but lets leave SE Asia out of this) in all industries. Places like LA, SD, NY, Columbus, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, etc.
I dont seek out gratification for A&M, but every once in awhile it comes up (football chat, where is your ring from, etc). I have only heard one person slam A&M (and she was just trying to stir controversy calling it a cult, she then said we were in Friday Night Lights???). Most have heard of us, know the football team, but can't really know how we rate academically other than it is a "good school" (just like most here don't know anything about Florida, or Michigan State, or Washington, etc), but they are generally respectful of A&M. A few are very favorable to A&M, I had an HR Director of a Fortune 100 hi-tech firm saying they really favored Aggies, that we had engineers who were well-prepared and ready to work.
I can tell you that my company, which hires aggressively nationally, has three schools at the top every year - A&M, Texas, and Illinois. Michigan, Ga Tech, and UCLA and the like are usually top 10. We consider Rice, Arkansas, Baylor and SMU as well, they have good top talent, but not the depth (not a slam, just they are not of the same size). Tech, TCU, and UH also have some nice students, but your hit rate goes way down.
Now, a year or 15 years after someone has been here, it does not makes one bit of difference where they went to school, but from a numbers game, we find the Big 10 / Big 12 student to be more loyal and hard-working ON AVERAGE. But honestly, I have known some smart folks from Wisconsin Stout, La Tech, North Texas. Honestly, I could care less where someone goes to school. I have worked for a Baylor, Tech, and Texas grad at some point in my career. All were good. I have had Baylor, Tech, Texas, Stanford, UCLA, UCSD, Wisconsin, Ohio State, etc grads work for me. Honestly, school is not the biggest differentiator.
It is like the NFL. You can find amazing talent at Miss Valley State (Jerry Rice), but your odds are better at USC or Miami.
