You guys are delusional. Texas A&M isn't very well known academically around the country. The most famous school in Texas is the University of Texas. Rice, SMU and Baylor are we'll known academically.

A&M has a modest reputation as a football school. You would all probably be happy to know that your football team is well known here in East Tennessee. I suspect, however, that you wouldn't be happy if you knew what we thought of the program.

OMG, people in EAST TENNESSEE don't like Texas A&M. I'm burning my diploma right now.

Depends on what region of the country. I have dealt with people in the Silicon Valley, they knew and respected A&M's academic reputation.

Grammar must not be too important in Tenn.

I can state for a fact that A&M is known throughout the country for their:
1) engineering school
2) business school
3) ag school
4) vet school

I work for a Big 4 Public Accting firm and am currently in Louisville; we place newly graduated Ags all over the country. My primary client is a Fortune 250 company who recently relocated their int'l tax group from Dallas. Included in the relo were a number of sips, sooners and ags. No tekkers, owls, mustangs or bears.

Baylor isn't a bad school by any stretch. Their accounting program is pretty darn good (3rd in the state behind A&M and tu.) Just not worth the coin IMHO.

RockyTop (whatever your real username is, I don’t know). You're an idiot if you think anyone outside of Texas knows about either Baylor or SMU. I've spent two decades living/working outside the State of Texas. The reason you listed those other schools and not Texas A&M may be indicative of your overall insignificance in society and more specifically your probable line of work. You more than likely work at a car wash or mow lawns for a living and are basically just an ignorant bumpkin from the hills of Tennessee.

Why do so many of you aggies think that everyone should go to UT or a&m? No everyone aspires to attend UT or a&m. As a UT grad I enjoyed my school as much as you aggies do yours, but I don't knock someone just because they went to Baylor or Tech.

Well oljock, I guess they didn't teach you at A&M the difference between grammar and a typo or spelling error. Sorry for the typo.

Say what you want - and even claim you know for a fact - but A&M is not well known academically.

Well Jock97 I would guess my real username is Rocky Top. You can read, can't you?

I also find it quite humorous that someone from a place called College Station in the middle of nowhere would suggest that Knoxville, TN is "bumpkin-like". You really need to leave the farm occasionally.

Hmmmmm. Baylor may have religious classes, but as a fellow Baptist, I'm embarrassed that your students (at least the ones at football games) claim to be a part of the same denomination as me. Just sit near the Baylor Line and listen/watch. They are like the classless tekkies, but just aren't that good at it.

Please tell me your basis for claiming SMU and Baylor are renown nationwide for their academics? Baylor while not a bad school, isn't even a research institute you moron. All of the schools holding a Land/Air/Sea Grant are pretty reputable, and A&M/tu are virtually neck-to-neck in all disciplines. Someone from Tennessee claiming to be an expert on education is the culmination of situational irony.

Ok Rocky, I’ll bite. What industry are you in?? If you say journalism or some other liberal art type area, I’ll accept your uninformed erroneous opinion as simple lack of exposure. If you mention any of the others I stated, or one important one I forgot (US Military), well this sums you up pretty well:

I am neither from Texas or currently reside there, mongoloid. It's a great state and run by Aggies! I do work with a few Vandy graduates though, so it's always great hearing how stupid and inbred you Volunteers are.

Why is it so hard to fathom that someone would want to go to school somewhere other than A&M? Are you people that narrow minded?
Rocky Top
How long do you want to ignore this user?
97, I simply said that the academic reputations and the quality of graduates of Texas, SMU and Baylor are well known around the country. What part of that did you not understand?

My business interests are nationwide. It is not unusual to discuss where my associates, clients and I like to recruit staff. Texas, SMU and Baylor are well known among this group. To be fair so are other schools like Michigan, UCLA, UNC, Clemson, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia Tech and many others. A&M has never been discussed but then neither have many other schools. This doesn't imply some sort of inferiority, it simply implies a lack of notoriety.

bloom, no prob with folks going to other schools. As I said, Baylor isn't a bad school. Overpriced, sure, but not bad. I just take offensive with A&M getting knocked by ignorant people over academic. You'll note that very few wronghorns go that route--for a good reason (just as we typically don't go that route with them.)

Baylor known outside of Texas? Please. It's a good school, I'm not knocking its academics. However, it does not have a nation wide reputation.

RodkyTop,

You ignored the question posed to you pertaining to your industry? What specific industry are you in that you would specifically seek out SMU and Baylor graduates and not those of Texas A&M? A&M is a large state school and certainly not the end all be all of education, but it is one of two flagship schools in the state of Texas. The sheer number of Former Students coupled with strong military ties (which means many Aggies dispersed globally) gives the school a lot of exposure.

Across the boards A&M is rated much higher than The University of Tennessee. So, once again please enlighten us to the competitive advantages of why you listed the schools you did and how they are more renown in the specific industry in which you make your living (which by the way you still haven't answered).

I'm sorry, I could take Rocky Top's kind of talk from an Ivy Leaguer or a great public school -- but did I miss the Vols rise to academic infamy? I'd have to go back to a previous poster that asked what your line of business is -- I mean if it's opera, homeopathic healing, or theology, etc. then i will acquiesce -- but as stated (and I think as is the case with most universities) there are a great many fields where TAMU is thought incredibly highly of.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
TAMU has one of the top dozen engineering programs in the country, a premier vet school, the best ag school in the country, and a top 25 business school. Oh, not to mention cloning 11 animals. A&M's faculty and research are top notch. TAMU has the sixth largest undergraduate enrollment in the nation, and one of the largest campuses (if not the largest) in the nation. The last USNews ranking had TAMU at 60 in the nation (tu at 52). There is no way this guy can be serious.

And y'all hate Texas because we're "arrogant?"

You don't see threads like this about Baylor on Hornfans before we play them. And that's not just because we always actually have scoreboard.

These threads never go anywhere. We already know A&M is a reputable university. Why waste your breath arguing? Baylor is a good school that offers something different. Growing up in Austin is why I attended A&M, because it offered something different (I also liked watching A&M football). A&M was also one of the stronger schools academically in Texas so it seemed like a logical choice.

People have there reasons for choosing baylor just like any other school.

He's not serious. He's more than likely a cub or a dirt monkey, with an alias. A&M was just a few years back tied with tu as the 15th best public school in the country. In addition to all those listed above, Texas A&M houses a Presidential Library, has world renown Genetics and Cloning Experiments, a top notch oceanography department, commissions more officers than any other school outside of the Academies, and The George Bush School of Government & Public Service is climbing in notoriety and success to the ranks of our Business and Engineering Colleges.

You guys are really touchy aren't you. I never said, and never implied, that A&M was a poor school. Never said it was inferior to Tennessee. But the feds have enough confidence in UT to hand over running the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to the university. I guess we'd better hope the feds are right.

And jock, my business interests are modest and probably wouldn't be all that impressive to you. This is also an internet board and I'm am loathe to be more open. I'm not knocking the A&M graduates just simply stating that they have never come up in conversation. The others I mentioned have. Now I suppose in keeping with what appears to be tradition on this board I must call you a name. Cheese weasel.

You make it sound like Texas only become a great state since Perry became governor. Funny.

I agree with the Texas graduate about how different Texas and A & M react to topics like this. That is true and very revealing.

Rocky Top,

I was only inquiring because you stated "Texas A&M isn't very well known academically around the country". It was interesting how you correlate A&M's lack of presence in you your own personal businesses transactions and discussions to the our representation (or lack thereof) on numerous levels and circumstances throughout the entire nation and worldwide. Anyway, I too hope the Feds are correct in selecting Texas A&M as one of only three schools to host a Homeland Security Center.
