Reading the Friday Night Lights thread brought back a lot of memories from my high school days. (I didn't play football - I was the 120 lb weakling who got sand kicked in his face on the beach. Never did send away for that body building course, but I have added quite a few pounds since then, in the wrong place.) My favorite has always been Winters Blizzards, with Hereford Whitefaces coming in second (went to Roswell High, NM my soph year). I graduated from Hirschi High School, class of 65, and went to all the away games. Winters, Coleman, Brownwood, Childress (I think) were some. We got beat in the semifinals by Palestine on a last second pass by Bill Bradley. If anyone remembers that game, no way we should have lost. Good ol' prevent defense at the end. Palestine won state the next week with a 56-0 drubbing of San Marcos. Anyway - what are some other good Texas football team nicknames?

Their fight song is "This Little Light of Mine (I'm Gonna Make It Shine).

And the Odem Golden Slippers, whose fight song goes:

Those last two are bogus, of course.

Coleman's the Blue Cats and Odem's the Owls.



But Lamesa really is the Golden Tornados and Amarillo is the Golden Sandstorm, or the Sandies for short.

Galveston Ball HS is the Tornados also, but considering that island's history they should have been the Hurricanes.

And Bay City was the Black Cats even back when all their students were white kids.

In Comfort the boy's teams are the Bobcats and the girl's teams are the Deer.

Robstown is the Cotton Pickers, but Cotton Center chose to be the Elks.

Happy is the Cowboys.

SA Lanier is the Voks, which comes from vocational.





Texas HS football, especially the playoffs, is too cool.
