My grandfather was from Southern Illinois, and his high school mascot was the Saluki's. The Saluki's are also the name of a directional school in Illinois. A Saluki is an Egyptian dog, and during the great depression Southern Illinois was known as little egypt, because of the meeting of the wabash and mississippi rivers. I always found that interesting.

Also, a town that we went through in Illinois was Peking, and although they changed it, They were once known as the c h i n k s.

This is factual information, please only read it for the sake of the thread, not as a slur

The Wampus Cats has always been my favorite
Something that I always thought was odd was the town of Whiteface(in West Texas) could have come up with a better mascot than Antelopes. I have also been bothered as some others have mentioned that schools like Big Spring call their girls team the Lady Steers!
And can somebody explain Odessa BRONCHOS?

Anyway Here are some other mascots that I thought were interesting or unique
Amarillo Palo Duro Dons
Harlingen Marine Military Academy Leathernecks(Rather obvious but they could have gone with Jarheads)
Dallas Bishop Lunch Friars
Falfurrias Fighting Jerseys(The Fighting MILKCOWS???)
Celeste Blue Devils
Booker Kiowas
Nazereth Swifts
Somerville Yeguas
Academy Bumblebees
Caddo Mills Foxes(best name for a girls team)
Tom Beam Tomcats
Spearman Lynx
Devine Warhorses

I went to Academy High School and we were at the time one of only two Bumblebees in the state with the other being Port Arthur Lincoln. Since Lincoln is now part of Memorial, we are now the only Bumblebees in the state. Others that I like include

Somerville Yeguas
Hutto Hippos
Mason Punchers
Itasca Wompus Cats
Frost Polar Bears

I was a Hutto Hippo (graduating class of 20)! The mascot of Hutto schools became the hippos after a hippo got loose during a visit by the circus in the 1890's. Hutto used to be a booming town until a fire destroyed most of it. It remained a farming community until just recently with the housing boom from Austin the last 10 years.

Most of my friends families still farm, but only a few of my classmates do. Sadly, the farms are dying out and the land is being sold to developers.

I am an Adamson Leopard and we routinely brought down Sunset Bison for lunch. Hey, I grew up in Elmwood, Illinois and Edgefield area. I married a Bison. Schools had a great, great rivalry. I don't know if they still do since Adamson has changed so much thru the years.

Funny that Texas has a "wampus cats" too. And apparently Arkansas.

In my district (in Louisiana), we played the Leesville Wampus Cats and the Crowley Gents (gentlemen). I thought for sure we were the only ones with wampus cats! Round that out with the DeRidder Dragons and that was one weird district.

Then there's the St. Louis Saints, Notre Dame Pios (pioneers) Pontchatula Wave (or maybe it was green wave) LaGrange Gators (pronounced gronj, not graynge), Washington Marion Chargin Indians, Welsh Greyhounds, South Cameron Tarpons, and Sulphur Golden Tors. Anyways, weird area for mascots, SW Louisiana.

FINALLY someone corrected them on my Cameron Yoemen.
It drove me crazy reading that all of my life. Not to mention having to answer the question: "What is a Yoeman"?

On the Tillamook Cheesemakers...unless you've eaten Tillamook cheese or Ice Cream, you CANNOT make fun of this. I love Blue Bell. Tillamook Brown Cow Ice cream blows Blue Bell away.

In Beaverton, OR, where we lived (go ahead, let the jokes commence), my sons attended Southridge High School. They were the "Skyhawks". Can you be a "groundhawk"???? Never made sense to me, but then again, neither did Oregon HS football.

jt eagle,
i went to dayton high, where we were also known as the bronchos, up until 77, 78, somewhere in there. my guess is that the cheerleaders wanted it spelled that way cuz it fit better in the cheers (b-r, b-r, b-r-o-n, c-h, c-h, c-h-o-s). it is still spelled that way in our cheers to this day.

B-R-O-N-C-O-S,
COME ON BRONCOS, YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!

Sorry jan, you'll have to forgive me. I grew up in College Station, and you have to understand how much misinformation I've picked up from the Buzzard, I mean the Eagle, over the years...

Actually, blame Dave Campbell's Texas Football. That's what I looked it up in.
