…..Selecting players with more than just one year of eligibility remaining? Or are we in a "beggars can't be choosers" market?? I noticed we've grabbed 2 players with only one year left to play…..

Not a fan of one year remaining, either, but the right player(s) in the right situation could make the ultimate difference!

I would gladly take another Robert Ferguson to fill in a receiver spot while waiting for the HS recruits to develop

Do players stay for more than a year now days?

I honestly do not see harm in a 1 year guy. Particularly w college football being a WIN NOW league.

I think the new trend is to get a blend of players. A stream of "plug and play" 21-23 year olds is sometimes better than developing someone with a few years left.

You also don't have to re-recruit the 1yr guys.

Eh, if I've got one year left and I'm clearly outplaying my level and want a bigger spotlight...yeah, I'll go to a school where I'm going to play in the biggest games with everyone watching. Scouts can get game film of you no matter what level, but being a stud for A&M gets you on Sportscenter and social media clips.

If you knew they would contribute like Boerkircher did this season, would you take them or pass?

Ferguson was a JUCO add and left early for the draft.

I know, was a student back then. It was very obvious he would be a one year guy which is why I used it as an example for taking a one-year impact player.

1 year players are supposed to be plug n play. Id rather get a guy that's going to be here for 3 years but these 1 year athletes are here to play immediately.

Theres pros and cons to each side of this. A guy with 3 years of eligibility wont have the experience and there's less tape to evaluate him on.

A 1 year player should be a sure fire starter

KC Concepcion was a one year portal guy. Take the best available

If he makes you better, you absolutely take him. We're building for next season, not 2-3 years from now.

We've had players leave after a year. Might as well get some with only only year left

Or you get grown ass men like Indiana has been doing.

KC only had one year here and you take that year ten times outta ten.

One year guys are here to play now and he might be a place holder until one of the highly recruited guys are ready to take over.

If I were an FBS coach in today's climate, I would never sign a QB, RB or WR out of high school. I would 100% be grabbing these skill position players from the portal, because apparently there are dozens at each position who are proven players. All it takes is money and we have tons of it.

Yep

In the nil/portal era there's no tebuilding years: you just need to reload, whether it's with guys you recruited out of high school, multi year portal guys or one year portal guys, you must field a roster that you think can win now

You'd rather not take all one year guys because then you're right back here needing to hit on your evaluations again, but you do what you have to do to put the best roster together that you can for the upcoming season

This times a 1000! You just have to get in to win it.

Constantly layering based on years of eligibility left+talent at each position on incoming players, combined with eligibility left+ talent at each position on current roster

Free agency and trades for proven players is almost always a better strategy than the draft. The draft is for lol poors.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I think you need to come to the realization that things aren't like they used to be OP. There isn't much of a development carousel anymore.

It's just like college basketball now. One-and-done players will be ubiquitous and will help teams win.

It would be interesting to start tracking how many QBs that sign with a school out of high school actually end up staying with that school. Your argument is interesting as TAMU could put a ton of time and energy into a younger player and simply have them bolt elsewhere to secure playing time sooner, etc.

Ideally xfers would have 2-3 years left, but if just one year and they are a plug and play and a big improvement like KC was this year at WR or hopefully the LB we got from Tulsa, then you take them and continue developing the FR and Soph. recruits from your HS recruiting classes.

I like adding one year guys. Particularly if they come from winning programs, even if group of 5.

Older OL is better.

Nearly every player has to be seen as a one year rental in the current landscape. We can recruit extremely talented kids out of high school, but many of them will hit the portal before they even crack the starting lineup. Also, established starters may want to leave if they think they can get paid more elsewhere.

It's foolish to expect loyalty from the players right now. Get the best players who can contribute to the team right now. I don't care if they're 18 or 23.
