That we don't send the QB our playbook like Memphis did

50 plus point game.

No more than 13 points allowed.

I'd like to see our offensive line play to their full potential blocking blitzes and giving time for Reed to pass.

I'd like to start seeing third down and very short and not have the third and longs the way we did last season. I'd also like to see first down conversions by a comfortable amount of yardage.

I'd like to see Reed has learned NOT to stare down his receivers.

I'd like our secondary to be greatly improved and Chappell to be a true lock down corner

I'd like our D to be stout against the run….gang tackling and being able to hold containment on the edges/sidelines

Offense - balance and ability take advantage of what the defense is giving up. End result - scoring 40+ points.

Defense - pressure on QB , no wide open pass catchers - everything contested . Limit explosive plays to 1 or 2.

UTSA has an experienced QB (Owen McCown - yes he is related, Randy is his uncle) 4th yr player (orignally with Colorado) and started for UTSA last year. Also have a solid group of WR's (5 of the top 6 from last season are back). Despite having a so-so season last year (7-6 counting a bowl game win), they were 10th in the nation in passing yds for the season and 12th in total yds. It will be a good test for our secondary and will tell us a lot about whether or not we should expect to see an improvement from last year.

I don't expect that their defense will be that good though. If we are not going up and down the field on this team it's not a good sign.

Yards per pass needs to be >9, and yards per carry >5 on offense. Defensively, those numbers should be <6 and <3, respectively.

Yet the Horns AND Texas State blew them off of the field in every facet of the game.

If this team can't do the same, I'll have more concerns than I would like.

50 + points, hold them to 10 or less points . Ability to hit 1 deep pass against a scrub team.

Not all non-power conference games are created equal. This isn't prairie view A&M, UTSA is talented.

They are not even remotely in the same zip code talent wise as we are.

Games like this ought to be a glorified scrimmage for us. That's why we schedule them.

We have a way of making them seem otherwise, which is why people are exasperated with this program.

I get your point, but PVA&M is a glorified scrimmage. UTSA over the better part of a decade has been a quality G5 program and we saw what happened when a team with all the recruiting bonafides overlooked App St.

Steamrolling the roadrunners would be a positive sign that this team is doing the necessary little things to have success.

Total domination. Both lines dominating, holes for running backs, stifling d, wr getting separation, reed throwing down field…50-3 blowout

If you want to compete for the playoffs, it needs to be about a 35+ point win. The sips beat them by 49 last season. If it's a game at half we're not going to be doing much down the stretch.

We need to dominate in all facets. But specially I hope to see a good showing from our pass defense.

  • Setting the edge (team was awful at this last year...glaring issue which was difficult to watch)
  • Fitting the runs (York has to improve here...while he had some great plays last year, always times in games where he just makes an error at crucial times and getting creased....granted vs. good blocking teams like ND, tu, USCe, but will not win if he doesn't improve)
  • DL rotations, including young pups getting some real playing experience
  • See how some of the new transfers look (esp. at DE...Pemby? Searcy? M. Jones? who will step up vs. a real opponent to help Howell who will be doubled a lot this year).
  • WRs getting separation and catching the ball (2-3 > 30-yard passes)
  • TEs are doing more this year (as integral to a Klein offense...TEs are the tell-tale if the offense will work, improved, and taken the proverbial improvement step forward)
  • R. Owens looks back to orig self vs live competition (same w Moss, but know what he can do)
  • No injuries
UTSA wants to show up and show out. Coach Traylor will want to show what A&M missed on passing on him

Lack of explosive plays for this team was a problem last year (and the last several years under Fisher), and giving up big plays on defense was also a problem last year.

Would like to see 12-15 (or more) explosive plays with a mix from both run (12+ yds) & pass (15+ yds).

Would like to limit explosive plays on defense to 2-3 or less, with none going for TD's.

(data below based on 10+ for running play and 20+ for passing play)
For context, in 2024 A&M had an average of 7.6 explosives/gm and gave up 7.6 explosives/gm. That explosive differential (0.0) put us at 14th in the SEC. Only Vandy and Miss St were worse.

Arkansas' differential was best at +5.4 (11.1 - 5.7)
Ole Miss had highest offense explosives at 11.8/gm
tu was best at not giving up explosives at 2.1/gm

What do y'all need to see in game 1 of the season to be sorta impressed by this team?

Me personally I'm only looking at how well we do in the trenches. Specifically our OL. I need to see them impose their will and get good push and wear them down. I need to see our DL able to get pressure a bit.

UTSA has a good set of WRs along with a solid TE and straight gamer in McCown at QB. They had a solid passing attack that I need to see us limit in order to feel "good" about the defense.

Scoreboard needs to at least show us winning with 40+ points and holding them to 10 or less. Either way I won't start to buy in until I see what we do against ND.

What about y'all?

Honestly.........domination.

We should be able to just line up and whip their ass but past experience tells me we won't do this and the game will be tight in the 2nd half when it shouldn't be. If we struggle to put them away in the 1st half, I am afraid its going to be a long season. I don't want to hear any of the talk along the lines of not wanting to tip our hand for ND.

Just line up and whip UTSA's ass is what I want to see.
I know nothing!

Dominate a team that we should dominate

Define dominate -
Offense……200 yds rushing, 300 yds passing…50 points…no turnovers
Defense….200 yds total allowed…. 10 points surrendered….cause two turnovers

Exactly. They might not be the biggest "cupcake" out there, but tu, Georgia, OSU, etc. would absolutely wipe the floor with UTSA and have thier starters in street clothes at halftime. No reason A&M can't do the same.

After watching Elko's presser, he seems to believe that UTSA's offense could be really good this year. They started kind of slow last year (tu played them early), but finished the year strong, winning 4 of their last 5, and almost everyone is back.

None of the following excuses after the game:

"It's okay, we just need to shake off the summer rust!"

"It's okay, UTSA is a dark horse to make the playoff!"

"It's okay, their QB could start on several SEC teams!"

"It's okay, we just didn't want to reveal the playbook before ND!"

Etc etc

Jeeeeeeeeeeez

Hit every single one of these on the game thread before half time. Must be another mediocre season of A&M FB underway
