Texas A&M has made a big-time addition to their 2026 roster today with the commitment of defensive tackle CJ Mims — one of the top overall players in the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-2, 300-pound native of New Bern, NC, is the 16th pledge for Mike Elko in this January window.
Mims left West Craven High School in the class of 2022 and started his career at East Carolina. After playing one game and redshirting his first season on campus, he then played in a total of 24 games in the ensuing two years for the Pirates. He left Greenville for Chapel Hill, where he was one of the better players for the Tar Heels in Bill Belichick’s inaugural college head coaching campaign.
For North Carolina, Mims made 42 tackles, had 2.5 tackles for loss and logged a pair of sacks. He also forced a fumble — the third of his career in that department. In total, he has played in 37 games, logged 79 tackles, eight TFLs and four sacks. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
