Who was the specific A&M football player that comes to your mind that never lived up to the hype they received when they were here?

I'll go first. Demond Demas.

Senior year Jeff Fuller

The one memory that comes up is when he got his tooth knocked out on kickoff in the Bama game. He got drilled

We have had very few players over the last 25 years live up to the hype be it career-wise or for a particular season.

Of course, pre-internet, getting hype and knowing who was getting hype was probably a lot less visible to really notice someone failing to live up to it.

All the low 4 and 3 star offensive linemen we've recruited the last few years.
All were grossly under rated or diamonds in the rough.
None panned out.

Don't think Fuller deserves that . He still had 70 receptions for 828 yards that season. I would gladly take that again.

And Branndon Stewart even though he won the Big 12 Championship game for us.

"Most overhyped" is always subjective, especially with college football, where fan expectations, recruiting hype, and media narratives often skew perception. That said, one name that frequently comes up in this type of discussion for Texas A&M is:

Kyle Allen (QB, 20142015)

Why he's considered overhyped by some:
Recruiting hype: Kyle Allen was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the country coming out of high school in 2014.
Expectations: He was seen as the next elite quarterback to continue A&M's high-flying offense after Johnny Manziel.
Reality: He had flashes of talent but struggled with consistency and decision-making. After starting for parts of two seasons, he lost his job and eventually transferred to Houston, never fully living up to his 5-star billing.

Other often-mentioned names:
Daylon Mack (DT, 20152018): Another 5-star recruit who had a solid but not dominant career.
Speedy Noil (WR, 20142016): Incredible athlete, high expectations, but underwhelming performance and off-field issues derailed his development.

Of course, all of these players were highly talentedit's just that the hype often exceeded their college production. If you're looking at it from an NFL perspective, several others could be mentioned based on pro potential that didn't pan out.

But how many drops? And as good as that sounds, it's not like Sherman had a heavy WR rotation.

This bleacher report article is basically how I remember the season going for him. Went from a potential high draft pick to completely unreliable.

Kyler Murray.

43-0 as a high school starter with 3 consecutive state championships.

Passing: Over 10,386 yards and 117 touchdowns.

Rushing: Over 4,139 yards and 69 touchdowns.

He had 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions for us.

He then went and won the Heisman and Rooke of the Year.

LOL

Let me help you out.
If a player wins the Heisman in college, he's not over hyped. He was not managed properly by our head coach his true freshman season. The only season he was here.

This is sour grapes at its finest.

I'm going with the OP on Demas bc he had way too much hype for a guy that did not even play his senior season of HS.

Over hyped A&M player is the question. He did jack squat for us, but did divide the locker room. Summy failure. Didn't extend Manziel, then **** the bed with 2 nfl quarterbacks.

If we want to avoid recency bias and go back 30 years, you could say Trent Driver.

He was supposed to be the best linebacker ever. And this was in the day when we were making a name for ourselves as Linebacker U (replacing Penn State). He was the #1 recruit in Texas in 1994.
He was in the same class as Dat Nguyen.
Had they had recruiting services that rate players, he would have been a 5-star all the way.
He did little to nothing at A&M.

What

That's really moving the goal post to justify your bad stance.

Keep digging that hole deeper.

Since he was only here his freshman year, that kind of voids him all together. Or if he had done nothing at OU. But of course that's not the case.

If the topic was talented player our coaches were not able to manage for one year. Murray would be on that list.

But again, if you win the Heisman, as far as college player, you met the hype, easily!

nvm, saw your edit.

WC94 is right though, Kyler has met the hype for everywhere he's played except A&M (jury still out on 'zona). Glad we didn't kill his career before it began.

Would love to see the combined won loss record of these two. Granger was a badass on the diamond.

Had we handled Kyler like we did Johnny, we'd have a third Heisman in the trophy case...

A much more challenging topic would be to name recruits that did live up to hype
