and what makes Kyle Allen's situation even worse...

he had Christian Kirk, Josh Reynolds, and RSJ to throw to -- all future NFL players with lengthy careers

can't say he didn't have any weapons

man my buddy and i were in school when Fuller came in and we were so hyped thinking he'd be great, of course was never dominant but then in that last game against t.u. he caught the go ahead TD and we both cried tears of joy knowing how fitting it would be that he won that game for us......and then we aggie'd it up of course

To be fair, we had one of the worst officiating calls I've ever seen in real life with the fake targeting that moved the sips into FG range with no time left.

Just throwing out a name that I remember... Kelvin Flood.

The TexAgs boards were full of cringe "There's a Flood comin".... he never did **** best I can remember.

***Disclaimer: Pretty sure he was here same time as Torbush who ruined every defender we had***

Nah, Myles Garrett is an easy pick there. Second highest rated since records started in ~2000, and #1 overall draft pick, did well here and at next level.

Garrett was/is the definition of the over-used phrase "Un-blockable". He really was.... too bad they changed the rules and let guys hold him instead!

Had a class with him. Only thing I remember about him is telling the prof to call him KFlood.

Randy Simmons was the #1 player in the nation. Unfortunately, he tore an ACL in an all-star game and was never able to contribute for the Aggies.

Jorrie Adams by a mile.

He was the #1 rated player in the nation at his position.

And the sole shining star in our recruiting class, at a time when the 'sips were fully into their dominance with consistent Top-3 rated classes.

Fran redshirted him.

And then switched him positions between Tight End

And then Defense.

Never utilized.

Then got busted for weed with Erik Mayes.

And was out of College Football forever.

Thinking back to the 90s, you might have to go with Leeland McElroy.

This is not an indictment of him as a player . . .the dude was amazing but the Heisman Hype was so great for the guy going into the his senior season in 1995 that he was always going to struggle to meet expectations. He had a solid season but got completely swallowed up in our early season upset loss to Colorado and our offense (built around him) really sputtered the entire year. The Cards organization considers him a bust as well.

Oh well . . .I will still remember being in stands when he ran two kickoffs for TDs against Rice.

Other dudes from that era - All great guys and great Ags but just did not live up the the hype.

Trent Driver - #1 ranked player in the state in 1994 and one of our biggest recruiting wins. He got stuck behind Dat, Warrick Holdman, and others. Started his senior year.

Justin Warren - 5 star dude in 2003 and contributor but did not live up to star ranking hype.

Reggie Real Deal McNeal got swallowed up by the Fran debacle.

It's depressing as hell when you watch a kid come in as a Freshman and beat #1 OU using nothing but his raw God given talent.

And then the coaches "coach" him for the next 4 years making him progressively worse every year.

A bunch of masochists y'all are, but I'm here for it. Looking at it through the lens of guys that were highly recruited but never really earned meaningful snaps in their time here. Not really counting guys that transferred after one year or some other 2022 guys.

2018: Colten Blanton (highest rated OL in our class and not sure he played a snap)
2019: Baylor Cupp (injuries sure, but still a let down)
2020: Demond Demas, Chris Morris
2021: Bryce Foster was ultimately a let down, Shad Banks
2022: GBD, Chris Marshall, Enai White, Malick Sylla, Denver Harris among others

Every program has em. It just feels like more for us as fans because we are so close to our program.

Senior year Jeff Fuller

The one memory that comes up is when he got his tooth knocked out on kickoff in the Bama game. He got drilled
That wasn't his tooth - that was a chip off of the crown of the Alabama player's helmet. No targeting call though, even though there was a friggin part of the crown of his helmet missing. But that's typical for us and what happens when you are the #1 team with the greatest coach in history on your sideline.

Jorrie was an OT recruit but came in underweight, like 260 or 270 at 6' 7". He struggled to gain weight to play OT and ended up at DE.

Unfortunately, his desire to smoke weed was greater than his desire to play football.

Kirk Merritt is the guy who had "jock itch" and didn't mean to flash the tutors. we actually cleared him of the first offense, IIRC but the second one was too much and got kicked off the team

We had another guy from west texas who got kicked off the team for flashing in public. it was during slocum era I believe. he was from midland or odessa i believe..

it is strange for A&M

if you had to list the top 5 aggie football players of the 21st century...

no doubt Johnny and Mike Evans would be in everyone's top 5

and they were not hyped recruits at all -- definitely underhyped and/or borderline unknown

I don't recall that. He actually showed out against Texas with 145 yards rushing and 50+ receiving in that season ending loss.

Defenses would just stack the box and dare anyone else to make a play, and no one could. We barely beat a post death penalty, very bad SMU squad on a last second TD catch and struggled mightily against Rice that year.

I'm sorry but I can't let you say this about Leeland. Yes, the 1995 Heisman hype was real, but hype isn't something a player controls. What he did control was lighting up the field. That's what made people to notice.

The offense sputtered? Absolutely. But let's not put that all on Leeland. RC's entire offensive scheme was unimaginative and predictable back then. Defenses stacked the box because they knew Leeleand was the weapon in 95. And despite that, he still posted over 1,000 rushing yards and led the team in all-purpose yards. That's not hype, that's production in a one-dimensional offense that leaned too heavily on him.

As for the NFL, the Cardinals being dysfunctional in the mid-90s wasn't exactly a secret. Plenty of great college backs struggled in that system. Judging his college greatness by his pro situation is kinda lazy.

Looks like we are both correct based on his wiki page:

For McElroy, the injuries, along with several less than spectacular performances against Colorado, Texas Tech, Baylor and Houston, turned a season that began with Heisman hopes into a fall filled with frustration.

After his junior season, McElroy declared early for the NFL draft. In spite of his spectacular junior year, injury concerns caused McElroy to drop in the draft. Although projected to be a first round pick, he instead holds the distinction of being the lowest picked player to attend the NFL draft. McElroy was selected in second round in 1996 by the Arizona Cardinals at number thirty-two. He has become somewhat of a cautionary tale against football players leaving school early. Aggie head Coach R. C. Slocum and others speculated that if McElroy had returned in 1996, he would have benefited from playing with a more prolific passer in Branndon Stewart and probably would have faced less eight-man defensive fronts. These factors along with the additional experience might have resulted in McElroy's Heisman hopes coming to fruition and his entering the draft a more seasoned, more complete back.

Claiborne wasn't necessarily overhyped. He was really productive as a true freshman. He just also happened to commit felony armed robbery before making it to his sophomore year.

I looked up a few articles and was brought back to the McElroy family. He was one of 12 brothers. The oldest brother, Lee Jr., started playing football in 1967 at UCLA. Leeland wasn't even born until 1974.

There was a 25 year age gap between the oldest and youngest kid in that family.

I'm no fan of King because despite having no development under Fisher, he spent every summer NOT working with a QB coach - unlike pretty much every QB over the age of 16.
And despite his dad being a coach, he just rolled with the worst mechanics you can imagine.

However he was a mid-high 4 star and was even in the same class at Demas - a historical bust.

Also for fun:
Check out the top Dual-Theat QB's from 2020

1) Bryce Young - nice
2) Evan Prater - 2024 WR at Cincinnati (Bearkats)
3) Ja'Quinden Jackson - Currently an NFL RB
4) Hudson Card - 2024 Big10 Honorable Mention at QB (Purdue)
5) Malik Hornsby - 2024 WR at Arkansas State
6) Luke Doty - will be back for his 6th year at a backup QB at South Carolina
7) Haynes King - more QB production than #2-#6 combined.

Yes, Fran screwed him over by installing the triple option and he just turned into a blocker. Regardless, he did virtually nothing and was a 5* TE.
