I always thought 8. Bring back the BCS poll to be less biased than a committee. Committees are always biased and political.
BCS included extremely biased polls. Committee discussing it is far superior

For sure we'd do just enough to make sure we don't get in.Frank Grimes said:Ag_EE_88 said:
If the number of teams goes up to say 30 teams, we'll finally be able to get into the playoffs.
We would be ranked 31 right behind a 6-6 Notre Dame.

If we had the same 4 team playoffs, who would it be. Imagine if Ga and PSU wins.
So PSU would get a spot. Ga in with 2 loss? SMU in? Oregon who didn't win their confrerence?
I mean who would the 4 team in? There would be more uncertainty than doing 12. 12-16 would be the perfect number.

16 is not enough games to get rid of bowls. Should be 24 plus an NIT playoff for the rest.

No. Too many.
I thought of a playoff for 17-32 but nobody would want to play it. Too much risk for playmakers wanting to go into the draft
Bowl games never had meaning. Yet people went then…deer corn said:
I think you will see bowl game attendance and revenue dwindle with the playoffs. Who really cares how their team does in Scentsy Bowl?
If the Ags play in a bowl outside Texas, you going?
yeah I'm sure those bowls and the TV stations definitely don't want the money.deer corn said:

also let's see what the 1st round matchups are before declaring the playoffs as awesome
there could a few clunker matchups
Define "clunker".
We've had games with big name teams that were blow outs in the 4 team playoff.
Stop being hung up on the team names as being what's needed to be a "good game"
And even if a team wins by 3 TDs, the "win and advance" aspect is awesome.

score one for the OP
the first playoff game stunk
nobody needed or wanted that game

I always thought 4 was fine. That way every major conference undefeated team had a shot. Hard for a one loss #5 team to argue they had deserved a shot - only that perhaps they were more deserving than whoever got #4. Lots of arguments about who was #4 vs #5, but hell there's arguments in basketball about who is #68 vs #69.
The big benefit to 12 teams? I will sit down today and watch 3 games start to finish, and I'll also do next week. I never did that with bowl games, not even on January 1. And advertisers will pay top $ for my eyeballs.
What it looked like for Indiana fans watching them play cupcakes all year .
