Pro sports do all they can to try and level the field. NFL is typically at the top. But at this time, there are still just a few teams that are set to win it all, mainly bc the rules benefit top level QBs so much. But some teams that can win a playoff game or two.

And again. People are complaining bc the expanded playoffs are new. 20 years from now. This will not be a discussion just like it is not in other college sports.

The game benefits better QBs but requires other parts for the QBs to succeed. A defense is a field leveler and takes pressure off the QB. As do run games for defensive first teams and WRs/TEs for spread/west coast offenses.

I think dual threat QBs have a very limited shelf life kind of like RBs. But I'm college they likely are more valuable than in the pros.

Gotcha. I will argue that the NFL, MLB & NHL all have plenty of examples that contradict you. Wild card Super Bowl & World Series champs. A hot goalie, etc.

College sports. Nope. Too much talent concentration at the top.

Didn't Ole Miss win the CWS recently as the last at large team in the field? Coastal Carolina won it in 2016 too.

Baseball isn't hyper-monetized like football and men's basketball. But the point has salience in the broader picture. Keep in mind that with the House settlement as currently proposed roster positions can all be funded with full scholarships and there will Cevat slush fund of $20 million in additional payments to especially high-value athletes for their NIL usage. No one knows how that will work or change anything.

Yes, Ole Miss did that in 2022.

No way 12 teams deserve a shot to be national championship.

Garbage Big 12 teams with 2 losses
Non conference champions without a ranked win
Whiny SEC teams with 3 losses... grow up you lost 3 games

What do teams need to do to "deserve a shot at a national championship"?

For starters, go undefeated, or at least play in your conference championship game without losing 25% of your regular season games regardless of what conference you play in.
Make the playoff. All that is required to be deserving…

I agree as long as there is not a committee handing out invitations, and the teams earn a playoff spot within the rules & criteria set prior to the season based on there record.

Coastal Carolina is a good example, and yes, while Ole Miss was a final 4 invite that year they are still one of maybe 20 baseball programs nationally who invest any significant amount of $$$ in the sport. Baseball has the most inherent ability for upsets due to the nature of the game, but CWS winners will almost always come from that group of 20 or so programs that actually spend money on it.

BTW, per a report I read online from last year Ole Miss spends more as a % of their total athletic budget on baseball than any other SEC program

Doesn't the basketball tournament not have a selection committee for the non auto bids? No one seems to have an issue with that.

I heard on XM this morning that over the past 10 years (when the NCAA went to 4 team playoffs) that 60% of games ended with a 21 point blowout.

And 67% were double digit blowouts.

If this is correct, then this is not new

Football was never intended to be an invitational basketball or baseball tournament. The fallacy of treating the sport of football like the sports of basketball or baseball was on full display this past weekend.
