I miss the times in 1980 and 1981 when we'd be playing pickup games on the ONE court at DeWare…. and Rynn Wright would show up at 11:00pm and say, "I got next". Happened several times, along with Sly Sylenstine and Dave Goff. David Britton and Rudy Woods never came…. Thank the Lord…,those other guys came several times.very nice guys didn't rub it in, they played half speed, just wanted to get out, I guess. We were thrilled. Loved that old gym. Played 3-3 intramurals with Sly in summer 1981. We won it of course with him.

Here! My three classes were archery (in DeWare), angling (on the south end zone tennis courts) and riflery under the east side seats.
NO AMNESTY!

Back in the 90's there was a band called Belly. Tanya Donnelly was the LV.

They played DeWare. I went. She looked me in the eye during the sound check. No one was there except us - I snuck in and acted like I knew what I was doing.

A moment for me for sure.

Found some pictures I'll post if anyone is interested in an off-season photo dump thread. Might do it even if nobody's interested.

The inside was impressive too. Imagine if 80 years of farts were trapped in a dead animal carcass, then it rained and was also 100 degrees. That's the aesthetic they were cultivating.

DeWare was just beautiful. I love the architecture- it was never an eyesore with the scale of the single gable roof and the huge windows. Maybe they should just replicate it in a modern way when they build our new indoor facilities.

I took it for a grade and ended up getting fd because I drank a gallon of coffee before each class. I was shaky af

Angling?!!

Are we talking about fishing?? Was there a fishing class?

Did the syllabus specify a three beer minimum before coming to class?

Re: Reed

Couple P.E. classes I took were in Reed.... badminton and racquetball.

Played a lot of intramural basketball there too.

I played there, too. Always said it was better suited for teaching structural engineering than for playing racquetball.

Deware had an old industrial sized scale. On a hot humid spring day, I could lose about seven pounds on a three mile run. That's nine beers at the Chicken!

.

It was a man's gym. No AC, everything you touched rubbed off on you. It was awesome. 1989-1992…..the good ole days.

I took that. I didn't realize how sensitive those triggers were and I shot the underside of the bleachers when I layed my finger on the edge of the trigger. No one was hit in the ricochet.

Racketball at DeWare. No A/C. We didn't carry water bottles everywhere. How did we ever survive?

The young ladies that played racketball tended to be very attractive.

Good times.

He definitely lost focus and his touch and I won the match. Glad I pointed it out to him when I did since he had a strong game.

RIP DeWare.

Circa fall 1986.

I took soccer for a PE... we played on Kyle Field.

We would wheel the goals in from near the old visitor's locker room entrance. Goals were set on the sidelines.

Pretty cool playing in the stadium.

One day it was raining ... sheets of rain.

The coach/instructor had us play soccer in DeWare... that soccer ball travels a little bit quicker on the hardwood!

Damn good times. Loved that class.

There was no water or fish involved (or alcohol), it was casting accuracy with spincast, spinning and baitcasting gear and knot tying. No flyrod though.

By the time I hit campus (86) we were in the Pavilion, and that was the very last in-person registration with runners and boards. Spring 87, they rolled out telephone registration. That was tons of fun in its own right.

(Yes, TE, I remember. I was annoyed for some reason or other. I think they have better verification in place now...)

Damned!!!! Doesn't anyone remember Summer Registrations in DeWare? We pulled card packets containing punch cards. It took two days to register when every other school took one. We stood in line that went all the way past cain pool. It rained ever first day of registration soakng everyone in line/
In the 90s A&M replaced our computer registration system and sold it to tu. Our IT company had the make ready contract for the old equipment which mainly consisted of removing all the Property of Texas A&M tags so tu could tout their "new" registration system. For an old Aggie living in Austin I sure got a lot of milage outta that one.

Took angling on Kyle when it was artificial turf. Took our own rods/reels and cast for field goals for both distance and accuracy. Easy 4 grade points.

"G Rollie opened on 1954, so you must be really old army to be complaining about Deware"

I think a lot of people here are maybe mixed up on what and where DeWare was. For instance it was not on the east side by the tennis courts, etc. DeWare was on the NW corner of the Kyle Field property. About where Pickard Walk is now. G. Rollie White was on the NE corner of Kyle Field. One would have to be over 90 years old to remember a game in DeWare.

Me and another guy from our hometown took it together unbeknownst to either of us until the first day of class. We were both raised up country boys and shooting since we were big enough to hold a gun. We both took the class for a grade. We both shot an "A" by the fourth or fifth class. The others in the class started giving us **** because we had already "blown the curve" by shooting perfect scores. None of them could believe we did, so we would get another target and shoot another perfect score while they watched. We decided to push back a little and showed them where we had shot through the same hole with two shots. Some of them never would believe that.

He is now and has been a Game Warden in Rockport. Scott and I definitely enjoyed our time in that class.

FWIW I also took archery and racquetball there. (Not perfect scores there though.)

Also took snow skiing on the ORIGINAL Mt. Aggie across the street.
I’ve seen them play since way back when,
And they’ve always had the grit;
I’ve seen ‘em lose and I’ve seen ‘em win,
But I’ve never seen ‘em quit.
