Why 2020 Recruiting is not as good as we think

While I would agree that we need to continue trending upward on the "star rating"--remember that there are busts at 4 & 5 star and standouts at 3-star.

What we most urgently need is good overall roster management. Get good-quality depth at all positions, and stellar quality at some key positions. How that happens (HS recruits, JUCO, xfer portal) is less important in the short-term. You want to be looking to building some long-term high-quality recruiting pipeline.

RC had that going for a while in the early 90s. It benefitted us that t.u. was in a bit of a downturn.
I'm glad that we are going nationwide with our recruiting.
I'm glad to see that the coaches appear to be going after the players that look like they will best work in the system they want to run.

What you don't want to do is what some previous staffs have seemingly done--which is to just offer as many 4* and 5* players as possible without regard to whether they fit your system or meet your roster needs (both immediate & long-term).

Focusing on star-rating in and of itself is just machine-gunning it. Sure, you might take out some opponents, but you might just mow down your own long-term success also. It takes an intelligent roster-minded, long-game thought process. You shore up in the short-term if necessary with JUCO, early redshirt burning when necessary, and now with the xfer portal (see: SMU).

It would be interesting to look at Clemson's recruiting over the past 10-15 years. They are one of the few non-historically great programs that has managed to achieve blue blood status.

In the modern era of college football (early '70s on), Clemson is roughly tied with Notre Dame in winning percentage -- right about even with t.u. and ahead of LSU. If you go all time, they slip only about 2 slots. Historically, they're up there.

Clemson's all-time winning percentage is .616 which is well below the Longhorns (.706). It's not much different than our's (.606). Clemson is ranked 22nd all time.

LSU's is .653. Clemson's winning percentage is closer to Southern Miss (.581) and a bunch of unremarkable programs than LSU.
To your point, Clemson's winning percentage was below 0.600 after Dabo's 6-7 year. They have been rocketing up the winning percentage chart over the last 8 1/2 seasons. They are 103-15 (0.873) over that span.
