I debated a long time about whether to post this and I'm sincerely NOT trying to rabble-rouse. This is a faculty member who, by all accounts, has had a good career and is liked by his students. I just think it's interesting to note that there is always a friction between academics and sports at A&M (and probably everywhere else). Thought others might find it interesting, too. My opinion is that he unfairly created mountains out of molehills just to criticize Fisher, but he's entitled to his opinion.

Hope A&M administrators have counseled Jimbo Fisher

Recent events involving A&M's head football coach and one of his top players has prompted this letter.
As an Aggie (Class of 1960), collegiate athlete, sports psychologist, and 53-year faculty member, I am appalled at the behaviors displayed by Coach Jimbo Fisher, who has a decade-long history of coddling an assortment of sex offenders, felons, miscreants and ne'er-do-wells while at Florida State. Twenty-nine of his players were arrested during his 10-year tenure there. Sports analyst Mike Rosenberg has studied university athlete arrests over a recent five-year period and found that Florida State was number 10 on the list (A&M was third). As he further indicated: "Imagine what FSU's arrest rate would be if Tallahassee police actually arrested football players."

We are five games into Fisher's troubled (and troubling) tenure in which he has been captured on television pushing and shoving assistant coaches and/or other team personnel and inexcusably grabbing a player by the facemask. These missteps have gone viral to tens of thousands of television viewers. It is my fondest hope that these outbursts have not gone unnoticed by the athletic director and the university administration. I am going to assume, perhaps naively, that the powers that be already have acted so that we might not have to endure 10 more years of this boorish, mind-boggling misbehavior.

Perhaps even more ominous in some ways is the prospect of A&M turning once again into a powerhouse reminiscent of the days of Paul "Bear" Bryant, Emory Bellard, Jackie Sherrill and R.C. Slocum. Winning coaches often are given a behavioral and ethical blank check by university administrators, alumni and the adoring public if they pile up the wins.

In our case, let's pile up the wins but let's do it with class. Shoving or pummeling assistants and assaulting players is not class!

Does he not realize that during Sumlin's tenure we were one of the leaders in the number of player arrests? Criticizes Jimbo for letting players run wild but then is mad at Jimbo for disciplining a player on the field.

Not particularly relevant, but I took a class with that professor, and it was one of the worst classes I had. Spent the entire lecture telling irrelevant personal stories of his accomplishments. Always struck me as a bit of a narcissist.

Apparently he has well known for "caring" but he's a ****ty teacher who likes to tell stories in class and let you learn on your own time from his book.

The only shoving I can recall - and 'shoving' is not exactly the word I would use to describe it - was when Jimbo was letting the refs have it over an obviously bad call during the Clemson game. One of his assistants came in to try to pull him out of possibly being ejected (I presume), and Jimbo pushed his hand away. Something like that. Oh noes! Jimbo shoved one of his assistants. This professor is worthless.

This is a 53-year teacher who is really pissed that a football coach is making $7.5 million a year while he's driving a 17-year-old Datsun.
The Datsun brand was phased out in 1986. Therefore, the professors Datsun is over 30 years old.

That dude is butt hurt that he doesn't matter. I'm sure he tried to debate or have some theoretical academic discussion with Fisher and got ignored like any SJW should be. Now he is taking that personal and trying to get some attention because nobody cares about that dude.

What he just did isn't academic freedom. He should be fired for such a fictional hit piece.

He can tell his captive audience all he wants while he is in the classroom. That is academic freedom. Going outside the class shouldn't be covered by tenure.

This Arnold character thinks he is more worthy of that paycheck than Jimbo. His envy is clearly showing when his own statistics don't back up his claims but do the exact opposite. From 3rd to 10th that quickly is no small feat. Not to mention Jimbo is not responsible for the actions of these kids, and has yet even have the opportunity to fail to discipline them should this occur.

He asks for discipline but cries wolf when accountability is enforced.

And what is this shoving an assistant all about? Until we hear complaints from an assistant this is a nonstory.

Arnold should be held accountable for this letter with false accusations, hyperbole and an attempt of defemation of character, not to mention the image of the university as a whole.

If I wrote this same hit piece to my HR department about my VP then rest assured I would suffer the consequences.

I remember in 8th grade (early '80s) my mom asked me after a football game if the coach often grabs players by the face mask. She said parents were appalled that the coach had grabbed their son's face mask during the game.

I told her he had never grabbed my face mask, and if he did, she needed to stay out of it. I also told her that if that bothered parents, they probably shouldn't come to practice.

In 7th grade, we got 2 licks for being late to practice. I'm talking lift-you-off-the-ground licks.

In 10th grade, we were the tackling dummies for the Varsity. Our star Sr LB was lined up to tackle me. It was right before water break and he went half speed and the coach was all up in his business. Coach told us to line it up again and that if he didn't go full speed, he was going to bench him. Needless to say, I laid on the ground gasping for air instead of getting a water break.

Everyone here probably has their stories... If you've played football, in Texas... grabbing your face mask is likely a welcomed response compared to some of the things you've experienced.

If grabbing my face, in lieu of an "F" I'd let you grab my face during the entire exam.

Let's take look at Arnold Leunes' Rate My Professor reviews of this year so far:

Quote:

Leunes cares about his students and is passionate about what he does, but the expectation for this class is simply unrealistic. Tests include VERY meticulous details from the textbook. There are 6 exams over the course of the semester, so virtually one every two weeks. Lecture is completely irrelevant, as it often consists of personal anecdotes.
Quote:

get ready to read the textbook cover to cover! there are SIX exams and are heavily related to what is in the textbook. he is the sweetest man ever but his tests are difficult
Quote:

I love psychology but he made me hate abnormal psych. You have to teach yourself from the book and he tests on very small details like "fun facts" in the book. DO NOT TAKE if you actually want to learn.
Quote:

Lecture is completely useless and he tells too many family stories and wastes time. wrote his own book and is the only thing exams go by however the exam has hardly anything to do with the reading.
All of the other past reviews were basically the same as these. Stay in your lane Leunes.

Bryant ran Junction Boys which surely would have gotten the entire staff fired in today's world.
Bellard resigned midseason, I'm too young to know why.
Sherrill was busted for cheating.
Slocum was a good guy, but still had a few bad apples in his locker room.

Point is don't paint the past as perfect .Statistics will tell you with 100+ young men in the locker room, there will be some bad apples.

I took his Sports Psychology class back in 2011, and all he talked about what how accomplished he was as a sports psychologist. There was not one thing I took from his class that I can use in my career as a teacher and coach. You could tell then that he was adamantly against hard nosed coaching and discipline.

I'm still more bothered by Tommy Curry's worthless ass being allowed to spew his racist venom and still draw a paycheck from a taxpayer-supported institution. If a white man did what Curry did, we would've already seen his bloody corpse being danced upon by the legions of social justice warriors. And, it would be both condoned and praised as somehow balancing the scales.

Fisher has been pushing and shoving assistants all season?? I tend to think I follow Aggie football closer than ole Arnold and I haven't noticed that at all. Dodson is his by 320 lb offensive lineman every game but shaking his facemask a little is assaulting him....jesus christ people have become soft. This guy sounds like he has some unrelated bone to pick with the University.

If Jimbo weren't a public figure, I'd advise him to bring up ol' Luenes on defamation.

Does this guy have kids I wonder? Has he ever ripped a kid away forcefully at the last moment to keep them from doing something regretful? Has he ever had a kid get arrested for doing something stupid?

Because if he has, then he should know better than to fault Fisher for what he did FOR Dotson and he should understand that the actions of kids (and in particular, kids you had no responsibility for raising for the 18 years before they arrived in your care) are not always reflective of the mentality/character of the parent.

This guy just doesn't like Fisher, did a poor job marshaling his evidence in support of that position, and than publicized his dislike in a manner that unfairly and unjustifiably creates discord in the Aggie community. And this guy calls himself an Aggie and an academic?
