I had this guy for a psychology elective back in the 90s. He would rant and rave about Gene Stallings and how awful he was as a human being.

When I saw the topic and saw that he was a professor of psychology I knew exactly who it was going to be.

Bebes is one of the finest human beings to ever walk the planet... though he is overrated as a football coach overall.

Talk to some of Stallings' former players. Almost killed two players in a practice on a real hot day fall '65, Carl Gough and Rolf Krueger. They were both transported by ambulance with 107 degree temp in heat stroke. Dr Henry McQuaide, team Doctor, rode in the ambulance and gave them both a shot in the foot that may have saved their lives. Gene Stallings mistreated a lot of players. Ask those who played. He was trying to imitate Bear Bryant. Leunes is wrong about a lot things but not Stallings. Stallings seemed to change for the better years later after Cornell Green whipped his ass badly one day at a Dallas Cowboys practice.

I don't know this fellow. I just want to read his old yearbooks.

Here you go, from the 1960 Aggieland (He would have known my dad, who is C Armor class of 58)

WOW--My Father-In-Law is right there on the page next to goober. Had no idea he was known as "Flick"! Have to ask him about that at his 80th BDay party coming up.

Cool find, Sir.

--> now back to the pitchforks thread

Flick? I wondered what happened to him after he stuck his tongue on a frozen flagpole.

Well I don't know him in the context of him being a football coach, my interactions with him have only been social on numerous occasions. Being a hard-ass football coach doesn't make you a bad person, especially given the time / day and age he conducted himself like that. As you said, trying to imitate Coach Bryant.

Regardless, to the topic at hand, that Prof can just F off and if he had concerns it should have been through official channels, not the student newspaper. Most all of this is baseless rumor and innuendo, and a blatant character attack.

I understood it then, and I understand it now. Bear Bryant was the gold standard of college coaches.

Nevertheless, many individuals paid a very big price to be made examples of in that coaching model. And aside from the one "Magic year" of 1967, it was an abject failure, by any measure.

I remember the coaches who chewed my ass frequently, the most fondly.

They demanded and expected me to be better, which made me want to be better, therefore I became better.

Dodson knows what I'm talkin bout.

His nickname was Jock? Wonder what that was referring to. Couple of choices.

He was a PE major, and on the track team. Likely a pretty good athlete in his day.

He was in B armor prior to the corps realignment, and armor cadets were known as "jocks"
