He did use the "play not to lose" card. Either at Sumlin's direction or his own. Anyway, That backfired. I saw some good things and some bad. QB needs to get better as I think he will game to game. The huge drop backs need to go.

We weren't "great." We had some great plays; some really good plays, but we also gave up plays and yards we shouldn't have. We struggle defending sideline to sideline and will continue to struggle until we get a decent set of LBs. I'm afraid SEC teams will figure that out and take advantage of it.

Wow some super negative folks on here. Would have thought we lost. UCLA is a good team with a future #1 overall draft pick QB. And we beat them. Chill folks. First game is always a bit sloppy. Sound like spoiled Bama fans or something. But even worse since we have nothing to be spoiled about.

I agree with this.

With the exception of the first bad series (pass, pass punt after being 2nd and around 4), I thought he coached well. Went hurry up a couple of times and was effective. In fact, I thought that on one of those hurry up series, that he sort of slowed just a tad to give defense rest. I don't think his coaching sucked all game. He did have that questionable time management series.

Defense was gassed and out of sorts no doubt for those two drives, but remember how much rain we got during fall practice.
Going full game mode with near 90 and high humidity, and not having an adequate amount of practices in those conditions to get acclimated , I think they did really well.

It was the first game for a the team, and specifically the OC and QB. There were nerves I am sure.

With a couple easy ones ahead to get the bugs out, I think this team could be really good.

Finally, considering the O-line was expected to maybe suck, they held their own.

Who knows, UCLA may turn out to be one of the best in the PAC.

I am not complaining about Mazzone yet with 2 freshman OL and Knight having a bad game in the first game. Knight has to get more consistent and not throw bad interceptions for us to win more than 7 games, I don't care who the OC is.

We look a lot better running the ball, and UCLA's defense looks pretty good. Not as good as about 5 of our SEC opponents but not bad.

Spav would have crapped all over himself after that 4th quarter. And his 4th and goal call would have been a pass five yards behind the line of scrimmage.

We won a game and will learn a ton from it. I hope. Yikes.

That said, he definitely had some head scrarching calls. Hopefully he improves as the team does as well.

You guys calling him spav 2.0 are ridiculous. The attack was much more balanced and for a good chunk of the game I thought the play calling was decent. There were some issues and questionable calls especially in clock critical situations but the issue I saw was execution more than ineptitude.

Young OL, somewhat mediocre QB, and first game of the year. I for one was pretty pleased with our running game today.

We QB sneaked it for goodness sake... Spav would have run a bubble screen from shotgun at 3rd and inches.

Chief will get on the lazy give up tackles that cost us 14 points at the end of the game to take us to overtime. We were great in "D" until the last like 8 minutes of the game. We showed our fatigue with the lazy non-effort tackles to prevent the touchdown to bring us to OT. I'm sure the Chief will address this but our "D" did a great job to confuse and disrupt ol' Josh rosen!

We got a big "present" when their center nicked that snap and and their QB threw a INT.

Multiple sets, multiple options, plays that build off each other, played 4 underclassmen on the Oline and a hand me down QB who threw one of the dumbest picks I have ever seen.

Looking forward to them getting some more snaps next week before SEC play.

Very positive. Negative was clock management amd synching with a relatively conservative DC in that phase. Unfortunately almaot all coaches are dumbasses in tht respect and its not going to be a favtor in most games so its hard to give him a ridiculous F like some will.

The OL was much better than expected. Even after Avery went out, they drove them off the ball the very next play. The OL and LBs actually give me hope for the season. Also we should have been given a lot of holding calls against our D as usual. The refs had no problems calling a couple on us.

With that said, there was also a lot of first game sloppyness. And I was surprised we didn't get more personal fouls. Our guys were mouthing and punching/"bumping" guys after every play. I like attitude but they need to be smart about it. I Hope they figure out were that line is and not cross it. We could have lost RSJ on the first frickin play of the game when he retaliated with a punch. It makes me wonder about our discipline.

+1. Bad habits indeed. I thought this QB was supposed to be the seasoned 3 yr proven/seasoned veteran from OU that everyone was talking about. I was looking for more from him. Perhaps he had a better O Line at OU? So many questions with him.

Ucla's good fortune they gave him up and we got him instead. Like said before just another typical Aggie hire.

I've got to wonder how Spav would've done with Turner coaching the oline.

I don't feel as bad about his playcalling after watching Kiffin call plays in this first quarter.

For most of the game he had an entire offensive line that had never started a college game. Combine that with a QB playing his first game for A&M and I think he did well. I was very happy with the running game. My only "WTF was that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" moment was the play calling on the 2 drives that allowed UCLA to catch up. More runs, run clock. Our defense was dominating them until he gave the ball back to them in 40 second and 20 second consecutive drives.
